Jasmine hitched Siela up on her hips as she led the way across a grassy field. Zerith walked beside her carrying his halberd (as usual) and a small pack with a few provisions and gifts from the city. The sun shone above them in a clear sky which made Jasmine very glad; they would need all the light they could get in a few minutes.

Before them stood a veritable wall of massive trees with vines of varying thickness hanging from the branches. Here at the edge you could see just how far the trees reached toward the sky. Bright green leaves shimmered in the very tops as a light breeze blew past them. A few feet into the vastness it became noticeable darker as the branches met overhead though not so dark as to need a torch. Neither adult spoke as they entered the Nadai Jungle.

As quiet and unobtrusive as they had tried to be, the family did not escape notice. Several pairs of eyes watched as Jasmine’s feet confidently moved toward the village that had been her saving grace years ago. Jasmine was immediately recognized, but the man with her caused great suspicion. Though he had made no threatening moves of any kind, they were still wary of the stranger.

We’re almost there, love. Jasmine said telepathically. We will probably be stopped and questioned any minute now. You remember what I told you?

Yes, Dear, Zerith responded as he rolled his eyes. She’d only told him around a hundred times. Don’t argue with them. Let them have my weapon if they ask. And, finally, let you do all the talking.

She smiled and linked her free arm through his. Siela, now around 10 months old, had fallen asleep shortly after they left the last village. This was yet another thing that made Jasmine glad. She had no desire for Siela to get scared in the jungle and for her cries to draw unwanted attention.

The young mother’s eyes darted back and forth as they walked through the jungle. Though they would not be going very far into the jungle depths, there were still many dangers. There were five different tribes within the Nadai Jungle; and while each had its own general territory, it was not unheard of for hunter to be found far from their “home” territory. Furthermore, not all the tribes got along or were at all forgiving of finding strangers in “their” jungle.

About an hour into the jungle they came to a clearing about 50 yards in diameter with a large boulder sitting in the middle of it. Jasmine walked up to the waist high stone and leaned against it. Zerith joing her though he did not relax as Jasmine was doing. In fact the clearing seemed to make him more nervous.

“Relax, love,” she told him reassuringly, “There’s a reason this clearing is so wide. It’s one fo the few areas in the jungle that is recognized as a safe area by all the tribes. No one, no matter what the circumstances, may be harmed as long they remain in this clearing. Our escort should be here soon. I’d be extremely surprised if we managed to get this far unnoticed.”

“You know us too well, Jasmine.”

The princess turned at the familiar voice. Before her stood a warrior with a bow held in one hand a quiver of arrows on his back. He wore a simple outfit of loose-fitting trousers and a sleeveless shirt; both were colored to blend in with the jungle. As he stepped into the clearing he made no noise at all. His dark brown eyes carefully looked over Jasmine and the sleeping baby with a welcoming smile. He became a little more wary as his gaze fell on Zerith.

“Who is this? You know you’re not supposed to bring strangers to the village.”

“Zander, this is my husband, Zerith Dracosius. The baby girl in my arms is our daughter, Siela. I wanted to introduce my new family to my mother. She deserves to meet her new son-in-law and granddaughter.”

The warrior sighed and rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand, “I understand that, Jasmine, but the law is the law. I can’t take him into our village.”

“What if he gave up his weapon for the duration of our visit?”

Zander thought for a moment. “I will consult the others with this compromise and return shortly with an answer. For right now, wait here.” He turned and stepped back into the depths of the jungle, disappearing without a trace.

Zerith had kept to his promise and uttered not one word throughout the exchange, now however, he spoke up. “Are you sure this was a good idea, Jasmine? He didn’t look exactly happy to see me.”

“It will be fine, Zerith. The fact that you’re willing to give up your weapon during our visit should sway them to take us before the elders at least before a final decision is made. Shhh, Zander’s coming back.”

Zander and three others stepped into the clearing. Zander spoke for all of them, “We have decided that we will accept the offer of taking your weapon for now. Since this is a family visit and our tribe values family, we will take you to the elders and let them decide if you can stay or must leave. Is this acceptable.”

“Of course, Zander. Lead the way.”

One of the warriors stepped forward holding out an empty hand to receive Zerith’s halber. The prince handed the weapon over, though not without some discomfort and apprehension. He did not like being unarmed, but had agreed to follow his wife’s direction about this.

“You are a wise man, Zerith Dracosius,” Zander said quietly, “many men would rather fight, and die, than give up their weapon even temporarily. It is an odd weapon though, we have never seen one like it. What is it?”

“It’s called a halberd,” Zerith responded.

“It is certainly intriguing; perhaps if the elders allow you to stay you can tell me more about it. Right now, we must be quiet. There have been sightings lately of the Feuro tribe. They are not friendly to anyone, least of all strangers to the jungle.”

Silence reigned amongst the small group as Zander and his cohorts led the family to the village. Before much longer, Jasmine was breathing a sigh of relief as the lift they stood on rose high into the air. The passed through a lower canopy of trees and the ground disappeared. Above and beneath them was nothing but leaves, vines, and branches. Jasmine smiled as a feeling of being home permeated through her being as the lift came to rest in the middle of the treetop village.
