My grumpiness in other OOC threads has caused me to realize that Althanas needs to come together with real-life stuff as well. Let's get the blood flowing with some good music chat.

What are you guys listening to right now? I've recently discovered this local band, KONGOS, and they are freaking great! Check out their FB page and let me know what you like.

I'm going to be honest, 90% of the time I utterly hate music people suggest. Especially when it's a suggestion to a broad audience.

But I like this. I like it quite a bit. Thanks!

As for what I'm listening to, uhhh. Well, KONGOS now. Normally I'm a metalhead. Went to a Rammstein show...what, a week ago? Always liked them. There was a band called Combichrist there, they're pretty badass live but their albums sound completely different, so I've been scrounging youtube for decent clips of their live shows. More bands should play with two drumsets.

I like Amon Amarth quite a lot. Immortal. Sometimes I get in the mood for Arch Enemy. I'm sleepy enough to admit that's not all I listen to, though - I'm waiting for Lady Gaga's new album and I've downloaded every single so far. I'll listen to Shakira. You know who I like a lot that I get teased for? Daft Punk. I don't get the disdain, I think they're great.

Anyway, yeah, there goes any cool cred I had. Thanks for the new band to listen to!

Rob Dougan - He's the guy that wrote that really popular techno track for Matrix Reloaded. I think it's called Chateau or something. But he's got his own album out right now, and it's amazing. Four songs that I love on this album. Speed Me Towards Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykKSOOra5QI&feature=BFa&list=PL9C4D68ADE98E1554&index=10), Drinking Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgNxC-TSBoY&feature=BFa&list=PL9C4D68ADE98E1554&index=12), Will You Follow Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHDPOAWslR4)(if Althanas were a movie THIS would be its theme song!), and Instrumental (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_XamVjYNvE&feature=BFa&list=PL9C4D68ADE98E1554&index=7). They're four completely different sounding songs.

This Brit named Fink has been on my playlist for a long time. He has two songs that I actually use to write on Althanas. Pretty Little Thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byIrfuspOfM&feature=related)(there are like four different versions of this song on YouTube. If you don't like one you'll probably like the other) and Trouble Is What You're In (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKTQ_arLFSc) (Sexiest Song EVER)

I'm also all about this particular song.

Monster (http://www.wat.tv/video/kanye-west-monster-feat-jay-39mq7_2zicp_.html) (Beware of language on this one) by Rick Ross, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Nikki Minaj. HAHA didn't see that one coming, did you? That's the Villeneuve Family's theme song!

Are you thinking of "Clubbed to Death" International?

Also, you're welcome Amen. As a metalhead, I have to ask, do you enjoy Dethklok?

The International
05-21-11, 02:09 AM
Ah yes! That's the one! I'm linking the other songs of his in my post.

Amen
05-21-11, 02:10 AM
I do. I get shamed for that, too, because it's not a "real" band. It's not Brendon Small's fault he writes better metal than most metal bands.

Yari Rafanas
05-21-11, 02:11 AM
There's a reason the Dethalbum outsold all other death metal albums... it's too damn awesome, that's why. No shame in enjoying Brendon's work as he is extremely talented and creative.

Amen

I think there's just a lot of bitterness because

Well, no, let me back up. When I get shamed for liking Dethklok, it's by my friends and acquaintances in bands. I can understand their bitterness: Brendon Small had television to springboard his music straight into the public perception. Death metal is a hard sell in America.

To add to the other discussion: I spent like a year writing to the Matrix soundtracks, and Clubbed to Death still comes up on my Pandora fairly regularly. Furious Angels, Mona Lisa Overdrive, and Burly Brawl too, and Zion by Fluke is an old seduction standby that has never failed to work for me.

I've been listening to Clubbed to Death recently too, otherwise some of the songs on the Tripple J hottest 100, Art vs Science- Magic Fountain, The Wombats- Tokyo, Birds Of Tokyo - Plans, Darwin Deez- Radar Detector and so on. Preferably artists that don't take themselves too seriously (poor Kanye).

I tend to bounce around genres for my music, and I prefer 'softer' stuff when writing or doing work.

If you liked that then you really need to check out Dougan's debut. He blends Modern Classical with Techno, with a few ballads sprinkled in there. It's a great mix. I Linked all of the songs I chose in my original post, so you can check out how they sound there. Pandora threw the instrumental version of speed me towards death at me like seven times, but I didn't pay a huge amount of attention until it gave me the version with the vocals.

Bon Iver, Arctic Monkeys latest album, City and Colour and Queen are on my current listening to list.

Impressed you've heard of Fink, International, I can recommend a fair few similar artists off the back of that, he's outstanding, even his electronica/dub albums.

Swing into We Are The Ocean for a bit of high volume rock too, and back to Jon Allen for the man with the sexiest voice evar!

I've got a pretty wide range of musical taste.

When I'm writing I like to stick with movie soundtracks mostly. The artists that I like to listen to when writing, other than movie soundtracks, are Explosions in the Sky, Regina Spektor, Feist, Lykke Li, and stuff that I just find easy to listen to.

When I'm working (working out or in the gym hitting people) I usually have my ipod plugged into the speakers and set to POS, Lupe Fiasco, Nappy Roots, Bloc Party, Collective Efforts, any underground rap, Macklemore, and the list goes on and on..

Favorite song, ever, and the one I honestly can say I've listened to more than any other, ever (http://youtu.be/a7UFQaDoS9o).

Lets see, I like Cake, Sublime, Primus, Sum 41, a various assortment really.

Sublime is my favorite. Pretty psyched about this whole Rome business, and they are playing close to me on my birthday. 80$ tix. FORGET THAT.

Really can't argue with music that is so inspiring. Our favorite video games often have an excellent OST to write to, usually without words. I usually find it difficult to write when I hear really enjoyable music with lyrics as I pay too much attention to the words.

I listen to mostly OSTs from games, movies, animation, and other things. Mostly games. Some of the games/animation/movie I've never played/seen before, but I enjoy the music and so I listen to it. I usually try and see/play the movie/game/animation after. Sort of a strange order but... eh....

EDIT:
Not home yet, but I managed to remember some~
Okami
Valkyria Chronicles
Paprika
Guildwars

What I've mostly listened to recently is Ar Tonelico and I really enjoy the music from it, so... it's on my to play list now. >: problem is, no ps2...

Radio wise, I've only started the past few month during the drive to and from work. Nothing really stuck with me so far except for Muse.

I don't find myself actively seeking out the chance to listen to dubstep, but I can appreciate it. Anything that makes Transformer sounds on a regular basis is cool in my book.

Metal. We need more metal. Death metal, deathcore, metalcore, melodic death metal, black metal, progressive metal, technical metal, technical death metal... Whatever you want to dub the genres, that's what gets my flag up the pole so to speak. Don't get me wrong, I don't listen to everything considered "brutal", as there is a great deal of shit metal out there just as with any genre of music, but my eclectic tastes in music are quite large.

Some of my staple bands include: Veil of Maya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLik-zYYyIU), Born of Osiris (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7URRMp4xo_0), After the Burial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWEA8XFtDK4), The Crimson Armada (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2vc7yqIkPA), Conducting From the Grave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pvFRJmoLe4&feature=related), annnnd lastly (though terribly far from the least), Within the Ruins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqMlumyiR4I). I have about 79GB (10700 songs) total in my library right now...

I've been recently getting into Dubstep myself as well.

What I have found myself gravitating toward the past few months is classical, specifically solo piano through Beethoven and Debussy and whatever is 'related' through searches; Celtic folk, both then and now; and of course... Nine Inch Nails. (I don't know why with NIN, and for years I have wondered. Maybe he just sings my angst so well *rolls eyes*... I try to offer the excuse that that's what made me love audio manipulation, and that is true, but likely there's something more.)
