Acorns...

I've been curious about what they taste like and found that one can buy acorn flour and there are recipes for bread and other food made from acorns.

Now, before I go do something awkward and buy acorn flour to make something to try, I'm curious if anyone else here has eaten acorns before. If so, what does it taste like and would you recommend it?

A peanut shell mixed with a pecan texture, with none of the flavor of either.

I ate one once on a random dare. Nutty and a little bit bitter, if that makes sense.

Acorns, when eaten raw are poisonous.

At least, the variety we have here are. They give you a horrid bitter knot in the stomach, though one might be okay.

If you prepare them (steam out the tannin) they can be ground into flour as Orphans says.

I wouldn't bother with it though, it's horrible quality and not worth the time when better flour is available.

Apparently, there are different types of acorns as Duffy said. Many different kinds. Some can be eaten raw while others have high tannins and need to have it leeched out...

Yeah, sounds like I wouldn't have enough time to do anything with this unless I just found somewhere that sells acorn flour.

I am going to have to buy some, I didn't even know people ate acorns....hmmm. I thought the gluten free mall had every type of wheat alternative but apparently I have been missing out!

I got stoned as fuck one day a couple years back and got lost on a golf course. I ate a couple acorns because, well, I was fucking toasted. They were delicious but then again everything is tasty to me when I get stoned.
