My name is Ozoric Newalla, duke of Corone and last scion of the Newalla line. In the quagmire of stagnation that makes up the empire, I am a forgotten whisper on the fell winds that roll down the mountain cliffs. Only the emperor himself knows my true name, and only his closest associates, spies and financiers know where I reside.

I am the worst part of his past, a shadow cast on an already dark reign. It pains me to bear the burden of this truth in solitude, but bear it I must. If ever the people were to know that the emperor slept with my mother twenty three years ago, the fallout would be more catastrophic than the conflict between the resistance and the imperial forces. It is better for people to live oppressed, but safe and secure and satisfied in their meagre lives than for them to be set free into a world of chaos.

Or so I have been lead to believe.

Cursed with long life, and a Fate that is out of the hands of the emperor, he exiled me to the top towers of the Drakengard; the empire’s oldest fortress, once used as a bastion for the dragoons who once protected the island in the days of ancestry. Looking down through the windswept swirls of cloud that obscure any glimpse of the home I have been denied I can only guess what wonders I have missed. Even though the grand theoganist’s verger teaches me all he knows, and the grand halls of the Drakengard offer me their legends in earnest, I yearn to be free of my chains and to ride out on a dragon and explore Althanas proper.

I guess, like the dragoons, who had to remain in the clouds and out of sight; a secret vigil for Corone I too must be silent. I do not deny that I have lived my short life in anger and self-loathing, eternally pondering what destiny awaits me that is so important I must be locked away so cruelly. I do not deny that to walk, talk and see dragons frolicking in the storm hold between the Drakengard spires are a great bounty. To see them crawl up and down the mountain summit that it stands upon is a treasure few can only dream of, but I want more.

Perhaps when the Rangers are defeated, I can be free of my chains.

Perhaps when the emperor forgives himself for what he has done, I can be severed from this guilty ridden rock…

Biography: Ozoric is a bastard son of the emperor of Corone. He was brought into the world as a by-product of a chance encounter between a sultry Radasanthian whore and the emperor approximately twenty four years ago, by the wax and wane of the imperial calendar. Unable to proclaim ownership of the child, and unable, despite his tainted heart to kill it or its mother, he exiled them both to the farthest reaches of the kingdom.

In the tall towers of the Drakengard, Ozoric was educated well and grew up a strong, if brooding and unstable youth in the company of the last remnants of the Dragoons. The Dragoon Guard once resided over the kingdom, defending it in ancient times against enemies; swooping down through magically summoned storm clouds that rolled down from the mountains in times of war.

Though the Dragoon now exist only to shackle the dragons in the mountain spires, so that they do not tear the island apart or raze Radasanth in a pillar of flame, vestiges of their splendour remains. Taught how to fight, orate and command the great sky lizards, in his duties as a novitiate Ozoric has slowly but surely begun to forgive his own self-loathing, and his father’s selfishness. Though he hopes one day to be able to return to Radasanth, he has found temporary solace in the whip of the gale through his hair as he rides, and the warmth of the deep burning flames in his heart that tell of dark revelations and mysteries in his origins.

One day, he will learn the truth, about his creation, and his name…then, not even a dragon’s flame can burn the anger away from his soul.

Personality: Though Ozoric is young, he has an adult outlook to life. He is emotionally cold, though prone to prolonged episodes both of mania, and manic depression. When manic, he is buoyant, childish, enthusiastic and immensely inquisitive. When depressive, he is prone to long periods of silence, working with his dragons or is to be found reading in the grand libraries of Drakengard. His reclusion in the lofty heights of the north Corone mountains has left him somewhat deluded into thinking he is more world knowing than he is, and he is easily vexed by well-travelled or wise people who venture into Drakengard.

On the matter of love, he knows little, except that his conflicting emotions about certain young servants and scholars in the bastion must lead to what he has read about. He is surprisingly confident and domineering when it comes to academic pursuits, stressful situations or the pressures of working with dragons, but like the most clichéd of anti-heroes with a tragic past, he is utterly undone by speaking about his feelings, or speaking to women outright. Perhaps he is more comfortable in the experience of men, he is still too young to commit to society's conventions.

Skills: Ozoric’s menagerie of skills comes from his education as a dragoon novitiate, the lowest rank in the hierarchy of the Drakengard. Usually, those chosen to climb the mountain and walk with the dragons spend at least five full cycles of the moon of labour before achieving this. Ozoric has done his due, and has begun to display a complex and deep understanding of dragon behaviour, tactics and the talents needed to work with such creatures. His skills are limited to his naïve view of the world, and because he has an addicted, obsessive personality.

Academic: The skill to apply logic, reasoning and problem solving skills to the pursuit of knowledge. Ozoric is highly intelligent, calculating and literate, and possesses an above average level of academic comprehension.

Military Strategy: A military strategist can understand and comprehend the theory of warfare. From an early age, Ozoric was taught the basic military principles that hold any strong military force together. He has spent far too many hours listening to guards and dragoons recount their tales, and as such, he has developed a keen adept understanding of military stratagems.

Riding: Naturally, a dragoon must first learn to ride; Ozoric learnt this skill on horseback, trekking through the troughs and farrows of the inner mountain range about the foot of the Drakengard. Though his thighs are calloused and his spine bent, his is an above average rider on equestrian mounts, and an average rider on dragon back.

Knowledge (History): Ozoric’s education has been exemplary. He has a wide grasp of world history, from the daemonic invasions to the rise and fall of Althanas’s many kingdoms. Though secluded, and though much of his understanding is purely factual and theoretical, he possesses an above average knowledge of the wider world.

Knowledge (Heraldry): As a Duke, though a bastard at that, Ozoric has been taught the endless scrolls and lists of names of all the royal families of Corone. This education, and his fervour to learn and to be a perfectionist has lead him to wide this education and now he can identify the vast majority of recognised heraldry from most of the known world. He is an adept herald.

Marshalling: Ozoric, as a novitiate has been taught how to prepare others for war. He can fix armour, repair light dents, sharpen swords, adorn ready knights in plate mail and tend to the preparations one might expect before riding out on dragon back. Though this affords him average skill as a smith, squire and consul to nervous soldiers, he has no such skill to wield the weapons he cares so much for. He possesses below average skill, a null skill if you wish with anything approaching a weapon.

Abilities:

Draconic Empathy: Born with a draconic legacy, Ozoric possesses a natural ability to communicate, be it telepathically or empathically with all dragons. This affinity extends to half dragons, worms, drakes and dragon born. His aura causes dragons, except the most wicked and enraged to stall before attacking, as they recognise a relationship between he and they – though the only signs of his dragon blood are his tattoo and his eyes, he is very much one of them, most of all in spirit.

Thermal Conductivity: Ozoric and all the Newalla line possess potent thermal conductivity ability. In the absence of wings, this allows Ozoric to extend his agility, including leaping, falling and levitation by drawing on the inner heat produced by his body. Such a temperate ability requires careful management of his body heat. If he becomes too hot, or doesn’t vent this thermal energy often enough he loses the ability to wield it effectively, the same can be said for exposure to extreme colds. It affords him an X2 boost to leaping and falling and so forth, often manifesting as super human feats of agility. It can be used as a minor levitation ability (moving at a slow walking pace for up to three minutes at a time) and a natural ability to alter body temperature.

A Destiny Unrealised: Ozoric only suspects his origins are draconic, he has no proof to that effect. The tattoo on his face was there from birth, as far as he knows. In truth, it was etched into his skin by the dragoons, who discovered the child at the doors to the Drakengard in a wicker basket, as one might expect to find an abandoned bastard. They profess to know nothing of the child’s importance, but by harbouring him, teaching him the rightful ways of a dragoon, they hope that he can lead them out of their long march from history and into the fray of the civil war that threatens to level their beloved homeland. What turmoil this revelation may unleash in Ozoric’s brittle soul only the Thayne can know, but only time will tell.

Equipment and Personal Effects: Ozoric has a small chamber in the taller towers of the Drakengard, overlooking the entry bridge. He has a small collection of niche interest history books, encyclopaedic tomes and heraldry lexicons. He possesses a modest amount of dress clothing, as well as labour clothes, simple tunics and a rarely used steel breastplate, which has a matching set of grieves and bracers. He possesses various personal effects which have little or no bearing on his role in the Drakengard, such as diaries, his mother's gifts and so forth.

As a novitiate, he has access to a dragon, but he does not yet possess the readiness, despite his empathy, to bond with a creature he can call his own. As such, the use of a dragon is limited to training, or to the patrolling and protection of the skies - done alongside his fellow dragoon novitiates and their senior officers. He bears no arms, and has no weapons. One might be lead to believe Ozoric was not in fact a noble, but a poor stable hand or thief in captivity. He prefers not to be fettered by material goods, preferring company and knowledge over trinkets and baubles.
