Valerius appearance helps to make his eccentricity even more obvious. With short-cropped, wild blonde hair and vibrant lavender eyes that stand out from his relatively fair complexion. He is of slim build but afternoons spent practicing his swordsmanship have trimmed his body of fat and given him obvious musculature. Generally when out on his frequent excursions into Radasanth, Valerius wears a comfortable waistcoat and breeches, although he has been known to don a beggar’s disguise so better to experience the city in its natural state.
Many people would write Valerius off as unremarkable aside from his eccentric appearance. Maybe they would be right. But maybe not.
PERSONALITY:
Valerius has always been more than a little eccentric. He has always been somewhat timid towards strangers for his entire life, and rather than socialize with others his age prefers to spend his (plentiful) free time in the library at his father’s estate. In his youth, he was a sweet child despite his shyness, but after his mother’s premature death, he began to change. He became even more introverted and his literary interests shifted from the tales of old heroes to occult texts and niche interests.
More than that, however, he grew to hate his father and everything he believes Count Raschael represents: gluttony, cowardice, decadence, and so on. He is firm in his opinion that birth should not decide a person’s lot in life, and prefers to think that power and skill define their worth. Because of this view, Valerius occasionally struggles with bouts of self-loathing when he can’t escape the knowledge that in his current state he’s no better than a weakling himself.
He is a cunning and highly calculating youth, placing himself before all others and generally seeing people as things to be manipulated and used so that he can further his own goals. While not a sociopath, he has a tendency to empathize poorly, though he understands others’ problems on a psychological level. He is not above taking advantage of any vulnerability that has been exposed to him.
In Valerius’ eyes, it’s a dog eat dog world, and he’s growing as fast as he can.
HISTORY:
Valerius’ life has been decent so far, albeit lonely. An only child and born to an emotionally distant father and a mother whose frailty condemned her to a life half spent in bed. He spent his early years surrounded by tutors, dreaming of another, more exciting existence. He accepts, however, that being the son of an aloof nobleman is a fate much preferable to the urchins that prowl Radasanth’s slums.
Valerius’ mother’s health had always been tenuous, but when he was young – so young that her face is only an indistinct haze in his mind now – an illness took her. She tried to comfort her family and to prepare them for her passing, but Count Raschael has never recovered from her death. He became far more distant afterwards, rarely interacting with his son or anyone else, preferring to spend his days in solitude or fulfilling his duties as a peer of the realm.
Valerius, thusly, is left mostly to his own devices. He’s spent his last few years of adolescence wandering the city and engaging in whatever interests him the most. His morbid fascination with monsters and other unsightly beasts has led him to hire out his services as a sort of exterminator, so that he might glimpse these rare creatures firsthand, even if it does mean he must kill or capture them in the process.
He looks to a future in which he’ll be powerful enough to etch his name into history.
SKILLS:
Swordsmanship: Long hours of practice have given Valerius some skill with swords. Valerius is good with a blade.
Knowledge: Valerius received an education a child from many of Radasanth’s finest tutors, a luxury many do not have. Supplementing this is the fact that Valerius spent much of his childhood in the family library.
Types of Knowledge:
[i]Formal Education: As a result of his formal education, Valerius has some deal of know-how in standard curricula, such as geography, history, mathematics, etc.
Local Knowledge [Radasanth]: Having lived in Radasanth for his entire life, even as a noble, Valerius knows quite a lot about the city’s backstreets and criminal dens. This comes in handy when he must navigate the slums while hired as an exterminator.
Teratology: Valerius is fascinated by life’s oddities, be they physical defects or simply strange and otherworldly creatures. He has accumulated quite a lot of trivia regarding monsters, folklore, etc.
Heraldic: Being of (albeit rather minor) noble blood, Valerius knows most of the noble houses in Corone and their respective crests, lords, ladies, and the history of many of the more famous families.
ABILITIES:
Physical:
Speed – Valerius is 1.5x faster than the average Althanian (Althanasian?)
Spells:
Third Eye – Twice a day, Valerius can mentally activate this spell. It allows him to see any overt magical presences (powerful spells, fae, poorly fashioned magical disguises, etc) within 30 feet in front of him. The spell has a 1 minute duration.
Nausea – Twice a day, Valerius can use an incantation to incite this spell. The spell induces powerful dizziness and disorientation in 1 individual at a distance of no more than 10 feet from Valerius. The closer Valerius is to his target, the stronger this bodily discomfort. If Valerius initiates physical contact between himself and an individual of equal or lesser level to himself, the effects of the spell may cause his target to vomit.
EQUIPMENT:
Steel short sword [1] Standard traveling clothes & wardrobe at his father's estate Backpack replete with necessities [basic rations, filled canteen, rope, cheap salves, etc]
