View Full Version : Show me the green (level 1)

Green is the new black.
02-15-12, 07:46 PM
Name: Orun Ingar
Level: 1
Race: Half-Orc
Age: 21
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 260 Pounds
Occupation: Aimless wanderer; mercenary when he runs out of food/money
Location: The wilderness of Salvar

Appearance: Orun is the product of his lineage in that he has hairy, dull green skin, small tusk-like teeth poking out from his lower lip, a strong, square chin, and a large, thick forehead. His green body possesses broad, muscular shoulders and a strong chest that leads to comparatively narrow waist. His hair fits the overall appearance as well: off-white with red streaks, neck-length, and often tangled and dirty. His eyes are dark red, yet his gaze is surprisingly soft compared to the rest of his exterior, save when angry. They also gleam with a unexpected intelligence, for the few with the nerve to meet the imposing creature's eyes.

Personality: The product of both his Orcish blood and his childhood among humans, Orun is an unusual individual. A life of constant and harsh by the human children built up his emotional strength and made him a sharp, cynical, and stoic adult. Insults, whether petty or viciously hurtful, rarely bother him anymore. Of course, that’s not to say that he won’t use his sharp tongue to match wits with those who would mock him. His quick wit often shocks those not expecting such intellect from an Orc, much to his amusement. While harsh and rough around the edges, he’s not a cruel person on the whole -- he just has no tolerance for those who annoy or disrespect him. His lifetime of abuse has done nothing to crush his spirits. In fact, it has done almost the opposite, instilling a pride in his lineage, even though he still has much to learn about the Orcs.

While fierce and merciless in battle, Orun is not extremely aggressive. In truth, he's usually too lazy to pick fights for no reason. He only goes out looking for a fight if he’s in a bad mood (which, to be fair, is not a rare occurrence). However, like any true Orc, once he commits himself to fight, he never holds back and will not stop until he has utterly crushed his opponent, or until he can fight no longer. Due to his slothful nature, few things have yet to motivate him to do anything besides wander aimlessly, picking up odd mercenary jobs for money and food. He does possess a noble streak though, and will go great lengths to fight against perceived injustice. When he can be bothered, that is.

History: Orun was the son of the Orcish War Chieftan, Orgrim Ingar, and a strong-willed and hardy Salvic woman by the name of Elsa who traded furs with nearby villages in the Kalev Highlands. He has no memory of his father or clan. Rumors ran wild about Orun's conception, with most assuming him to be a product of rape. His mother denied such claims, though otherwise never went into detail. Whatever the truth, in the rare instances when his mother talked Orgrim, she always spoke of his great strength, valor, and honor. The young half-blood chose to believe his mother’s words over the cruel stories that villagers told.

His mother was one of Orun’s few sources of comfort as he grew up, his only defender against the xenophobic villagers. She was a strong-willed, intelligent woman. She taught Orun the basics of reading and writing before she passed away from a wasting illness. After his mother’s death, the young half-Orc decided to leave before the local humans drove him out. Thus began his life as a wanderer, which continues to this day, years later.

Equipment: Orun owns a battered, but sturdy round oak shield with a three foot diameter, an equally battered single-handed iron battleaxe, a slightly less beaten iron throwing knife, well-worn leather boots, a grey wool shirt, deer hide pants, armor made from boiled leather and iron rings, and some rope and other basic survival gear.

Skills:

Survival: Orun possesses survival skills that the hearty few living in the wilds of Salvar would consider sub-part. However, compared to most other people, his fieldcraft is almost impressive. He can usually avoid getting lost while traveling and knows how to start fires and make or find shelter easily. He can hunt when necessary, though does not possess the best weapons for it. Still, he isn’t fully self-sufficient yet, and often takes jobs as a mercenary for travelers and bandits alike to provide food.

Armed Combat: Orun is an efficient and ruthless combatant with his axe and shield. Though his weapons are sub-standard, he compensates for their shortcomings through his strength and skill. He is a dangerous and ruthlessly unpredictable fighter with his axe and shield, and with daggers and knives.

Unarmed Combat: His rough childhood forced him to learn how to defend himself. His large fists are now dangerous weapons and he can grapple quite effectively.

Military Knowledge: During the few years that he traveled (wandered, really) the lands of northern and central Salver, and Berevar to an extent, Orun has witnessed countless battles between rival lords from the various fiefdoms that make up the massive Kingdom. As a mercenary, he has participated in several conflicts and skirmishes. Already, he is proving to be his father’s son; he has developed a keen mind for warfare, showing uncanny cunning and intelligence in matters of strategy and tactics.

Limited Literacy: His mother taught him the basics of reading and writing, and while he struggles to understand more complex writing, he can get by better than some. He actually comprehends written Tradespeak better than his native Salvic, due to his mother's occupation as a trader.

Abilities:

Orcish Strength: Orun's Orcish blood gives him more than just awesome green skin. He already possesses twice the strength of an average man, and his frame could fill out even more as time goes on.

Orcish Constitution: His superior bulk and a lifetime in the unforgiving wilderness had rendered the half-Orc impressively resilient. He can take twice the physical punishment of a typical human, both from blows in combat and from the harsh weather elements.

Orcish Endurance: Whether from his physical vitality or his iron will, Orun simply endures and survives. His overall endurance is easily twice that of any average human -- he can run further, go longer without food or rest, recover faster from exhaustion and injury, and stomach rotten food and minor poisons.

Lean Physique: Though bulkier than many humans, his frame is almost wiry compared to a full-blooded Orc. Orun uses this to his advantage, displaying surprising agility and reflexes for his size. Both are about 50% better than average, allowing him to out-speed larger, stronger foes and match many lighter opponents.

Disadvantages:

Penniless and alone: Orun has no place to call home and not a single coin to his name. He wanders the unforgiving wildness, trying his best to survive after being driven from his home village. The only time he travels with company is when he is being paid to protect them.

Stigma of green skin: Especially in Salvar, Orun’s lineage causes many to spurn and scorn him. The few who react without disdain rarely take him seriously, expecting him to be stupid or slow-witted. Of course, were they to talk to and get to know him, they would find a clever, intelligent, and comparatively well-spoken individual hiding beneath his rough exterior. No one has taken the time to do so yet, though.
