(Level 0.)
Name: Gerard R. Faure
Age: 32
Race: Human
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Green
Height: 5'11''
Weight: 174 lbs.
Occupation: Physician, former Medic
Left-Handed
Personality: For a learned and educated man, Gerard is a very hard man to upset or anger. He has a great deal of patience and is generally warm and amiable to most people he meets, but it could be said that a symptom of his high education and bookish nature has caused him to live inside his head. He is often making notes or mumbling to himself when in deep thought as he tries to quell his insatiable desire to learn and understand. He is curious and a scientist at heart making him especially creative while trying to learn new things. Gerard can be mischievous at times, but generally he's fairly level-headed and easy to deal with.
His life is dedicated to helping others and he's quite used to it. His time in the service as a line medic has toughened him up and made him a bit more callous to people after seeing the horrors wrought by war. Gerard is a man of principle and honor, and always tries to do right by others while also standing up for what he knows to be honorable. A man of faith and a true neutral, He believes in fair treatment to all and is a bit of altruist in that he will use his gifts to help others regardless of whether they are friend or foe.
Appearance: Gerard is short, lanky and fairly hairy for a man his age. He is fit and after practicing for so long knows the importance of good, sound health. He has a rather large, hawk nose and wire-rimmed spectacles. He has high, prominent cheekbones and has difficulty growing facial hair outside of his stiff, well-trimmed goatee. His hair is black as ash, trimmed and well kept while his eyes are a deep solid green. Gerard gives off a warm, inviting presence and by his casual nature you'd be hard pressed to know that he was ever in the service, but he does have a look about him that he is rather traveled and speaks with a thick accent, but it’s hard to discern where exactly he is from. He usually dresses in trousers and shirts as well as his favorite suspenders, but has been known to wear a tie, waist jacket and suit jacket.
Skills:
Medicine - Level 1 - This skill is the culmination of Gerard's understanding, education and experience as a physician. Everything that he learns in his subsequent skills relating to medicine is compiled here. This skill directly affects Gerard's Treat ability which is the physical application of his medical skills. Gerard can only use methods and treatments from things he understands. Medicine and its subsequent skills can be leveled up through the reading of books, lessons from physicians or surgeons possessing equal or greater skill then him, or through dissections and vivisections.
1) Anatomy - Level 1 - Gerard has a firm understanding of the complex human body through schooling and subsequent dissections of animals and human cadavers. He knows musculature, bone structure, organs and their functions as well as how they all interact. At this stage of learning, Gerard understands the body is like that of a machine and all of it’s inter working parts exist to serve the brain.
2) Internal Medicine - Level 1 - Gerard has an education in herbalism, botany, biology, and chemistry which gives him the understanding necessary to treat patients with medicines. He has a firm understanding of the body, herbs and chemicals and how they interact in both positive and negative ways. This means he can treat minor illnesses and ailments with herbs and concoctions like that of an apothecary. He can also properly identify most fauna and herbs in Corone and Salvar. He can create salves, serums, balms, poultices, ointments, and most anything a learned physician can think of to help alleviate or treat a patient's wounds, illnesses or diseases. Limited by the time he lives in and his education, Gerard has yet to understand how to use and produce chemical drugs and has a limited understanding of vaccinations.
3) Physician and Surgeon - Level 1 - Gerard is a practicing physician and his understanding and knowledge of medicine is also lent by the experience he has had as a line medic. Through schooling, training and experience, Gerard is qualified as both a medic and doctor to serve patients. He knows how to treat mechanical or motor injuries, most bodily wounds from moderate to severe, how to amputate a limb, and how to conduct minor surgeries.
4) Blood and Tissue - Level 1 - Through education and experience, Gerard understands the functioning of tissue and how to treat surface to deep tissue wounds, including repairing some muscles and ligaments. Knowing how to control blood loss and every dressing from field dressings to tourniquets, Gerard knows and understands types of blood loss from arterial, internal to hemorrhaging. As well as how to treat damage to veins or arteries. Gerard at this time is limited and cannot treat problems or injuries with joints or nerves.
5) Trauma - Level 1 - Arguably one of his most endearing skills that has been lent to him by his time serving as a medic, Gerard knows how to treat most bodily trauma and how to interact with a patient in a panicked state. This also allows him to properly identify and treat shock.
6) Epidemiology - Level 1 - Gerard has studied disease, viruses, infections and illnesses as closely and diligently as the confines of the times and his education will allow. He is able to identify and treat most minor infections and illnesses. He can identify a wide variety of diseases and viruses, but is limited in his ability to treat them effectively and once they spread and become lethal, there is nothing Gerard can currently do to reverse it. In context of epidemics or plagues, Gerard is able to appropriately manage them through measures of prevention and hygiene, but is unable at this level to develop new cures to diseases or viruses, even to the ones he knows of.
Note: For simplicity's sake, I'm not going to list every disease, illness, etc. that he is able to identify and treat. The summary of this skill allows Gerard to identify and treat common illnesses, diseases and viruses. In the event of an outbreak of a plague or epidemic, he is able to adequately manage and knows of ways to control the outbreak and prevent infection, but he cannot develop new cures for diseases or viruses, both known and unknown to his understanding.
Abilities:
Treat - Level 1 - Gerard is able to treat patients with injuries, ailments, traumas, wounds or physical problems that he knows of and understands through his knowledge of medicine and anatomy. He cannot safely and reliably perform anything as a physician that he does not know of, leaving him entirely dependent on his education, experience and skills. It is even a gamble for him to attempt to guess on treating injuries or ailments he knows nothing about. At this level, Gerard can treat most motor injuries and tissue wounds, perform small surgeries, create minor to moderate medicines, and is able to deal with patients with traumatic injuries safely and successfully.
Note: This ability is dependent on his knowledge of skills and can only increase in level when the skill Medicine levels. However, he is able to use new things he learns in Medicine's subsequent skills, but is limited to the confines of that particular skill only. He cannot become creative and think of new treatments or methods to use that are outside of his understanding.
Equipment:
Physician's tools: The tools of his trade are kept in a leather traveler's pack that are always in his possession. This includes everything from his surgical instruments to his stethoscope and anything he might possibly need to treat a patient. The pack can be opened into four sections where his instruments and tools are kept in capacious pouches that are neatly labeled and are in meticulous order. The straps are sturdy and designed to withstand considerable wear. By the brown appearance and the Red Cross over white background labeled on top of it, it looks to be a pack he acquired when he was in the service.
Pocket Knife - About 4 to 5 inches long, this knife is used for more practical purposes then for confrontation. It’s a fold-in knife with a metal case and wrapped in bright crimson. It is initialed D.B.
Library - At Home - Not gifted with a photographic memory and unable to recall everything at a moment's notice, even with an encyclopedic knowledge of medicine, Gerard has made it a firm practice to establish a library with all of his necessary medical texts and anything he might perchance be reading at the time. Starting it in his early twenties, his library has grown quite extensive with hundreds of books stacked in shelves from floor to ceiling. Any books he buys, receives, or collects will be automatically put here and annotated unless otherwise noted from here on.
Telescope - At Home - A very solitary hobby, Gerard is fascinated with astronomy and the celestial wonders of Althanas. This is a very expensive telescope and well-made with tripod included. Too big to take with him while traveling, Gerard looks out his window and will sometimes take the trouble to take it outdoors at night where he can study the stars in comfortable silence.
