Actually, that would perfectly describe my step-brother, who, when I was 7 or 8, told me my new puppy Freckles had been run over by an 18-wheeler. He hid the puppy in a box, and I didn't find out it was an 'April Fool's' until a few days later; he'd gone back to his home, but forgotten the puppy in the box. Aaaand of course, due to lack of water, the puppy was dead.
