He was no stranger to this place, often finding his little nook for a wooden stool and a hand-made rack to put his ornaments and arrows. Each time he would return with items of slightly better quality than before to show his improving skills, though his friends would often buy the arrows first for their own hunting needs. They would always make sure they would search for a bird every time they went hunting so he could use the feathers to resupply them.
The days went on like this for almost two score back at the capitol. With the capitol destroyed, he was no longer happy with the scent of the bread at the stalls, and the taste of the meat of his game. He pondered the better days as he walked, his long hair bobbing by its many braids alongside of him. He was an eccentric sight to see, and even in the two years of being at this port city, he was a familiar one.
Catching himself "thinking" again, he rose his head and kept paying attention to his surroundings. He had decent coin that he had been saving up for new tools. While he knew how to be a fletch arrows, but the age old art of making and caring for bows was still beyond him. To up his game, and to hunt bigger game, he needed a proper bow instead of the survival bows he had been making with his hunting friends. His sharp eyes scanned the area for a weapon smith with bows, as he knew he required a new quarterstaff for close quarters. He had forgotten how many years he truly lived, and his old one had served him for almost a decade before it cracked while he tried to help lift a wagon by wedging his staff between a rock to get it from the mud.
"Ey'! Lidas!"
The familiar sight of the kabob seller, Carlas, waved the fur-clad elf down. He was around much later in the day than normal, as he often would buy his breakfast from the vendor before finding his own place at the stalls. Returning the wave, Lidas smiled and headed on over to the stall.
"Missed ya this morning! Long hunt today?"
"I made the realization that I need to broaden myself. I am one of the last in our group to find a real bow since the exodus, so I'm in the market to find something sturdy and easy to care for. I... also snapped my quarterstaff last week trying to help the tinker get his cart out of the mud."
"Yeah! He was tellin me about that! Staffs er a bit a dozen, so that shouldn't be a problem. Hmmm... Are ya lookin' for price or for quality?"
"I have a little stored up from the fur trade. The winters have been unkind to this place since the Wars. I'm hoping for a good longbow."
"Furs and weapons have really been in demand lately. You and me both know about the price of our bows."
"Hence why I tried to hold out so long. We have been needing to go deeper into the Red Wood to find good game, however. The outskirts are fairly clean now, and we have been running into predators. Though they have a higher price tag, Joriel nearly lost his arm two nights ago to a wild cat. People around here have been taking down the normal game to survive and now they are starting to get more brave because they are hungry. My bone arrows have been selling very quickly with my friends."
"Hooooo boy. Cat meat? A pretty lean meat, but still good with onion! If you ever snag a bear, by the gods! I'll pay top dollar for that meat! Plentiful and fatty! I'll be selling kabobs out the ears and selling the rest as jerky!"
"I will inform the group for certain. After the cat, however, we all agreed we needed to strengthen ourselves. Are you will supplied for the next couple of days?"
"I got enough to last me, but the Mid-Harvest Festival is in two weeks! Snag me a bear by then, and we'll all be happy! Tell ya what... to save you boys some coin, I'll give you some free dinner! You always deliver something on time, so I always stay stocked. Since everyone is preparing for the festival even now, sales are down."
"Carlas... thank you!"
"Here ya go! Some moose jerky just for you! I got me spices that make my meat last me! Still... don't want just jerky to sell at the stand!"
He recalled the moose was before the cat incident, almost two weeks. Taking a bit of the jerky and biting down into it, the meat was still rich and salty. It was always a treat to have Carlas' meats! Savoring the morsel, he put the rest of the jerky in his satchel and smiled.
"I have no idea how you do it!"
"Neither does the butcher! That's why I got the contract for the Tel Aglarim rations! I'm always in the market for more meat! Now, for your bow! I hear that some of the higher-end bows haven't been selling. Might not be in your price range, mind you, but because of the influx of poorer refugees the local wood bows have been flying off the shelves for double what they were in the capitol!"
"Considering what imports we have here, I can assure you that I have not the money for such things."
"Perhaps, my friend... but if it is as you say in the Red Wood, then they will have a harder time getting the wood as well. We will need you to have a bow and clear the predators out so that the bowyers can get more local wood. Play this as a bard plays a fiddle, and you can talk him down. Besides... if you get a greater bow, you can get me more meat."
Resting a hand on his friends shoulder, Arialidas smiled at one of his greatest customers.
"Thank you, my friend. May the gods smile on your sales today."
Carlas returned the smile, knowing that often times when Arialidas said that, in the next few days, he would have better sales. Resting his own hand back on Arialidas, the two exchanged a brotherly gesture before Lidas moved on to the weapons side of the bazaar. His steps were more like strides and he confidently stepped down the stone path to look for good deals and even better quality weapons.
