House Vasolt – A minor, but very old and well known family within Uroda. The Vasolts have served under the Barnabas Barony and House for generations as their protectors and servants. Their start can be traced back more then three hundred years ago to Ulric Vasolt, a knight who swore his sword to the Barnabas during Urodan’s civil war against the Rathaxean Crown over control of the region’s mines and most valuable resources, the Iron Wars. Though the rebellion was eventually crushed under the might of the Crown’s armies, the Vasolts had stood with the Barnabas and their other bannermen against the Crown and managed to hold their own through most of the war before all other nobles among the rebellion had chosen to surrender. The Vasolt are of a warrior stock, but have also been reputed as tradesmen and artisans that had managed to amass much of the house’s present wealth, which remains sizable. Nowadays, the Vasolts are known for their history of producing worthy soldiers that remain loyal and dutiful to their liege lord that aspire to adhere to the same honor and valor that their ancestors presented during times of great strife. The Vasolt family calls their home at Vasolt Manor in the fiefdom of Hraesvelgr.
Family Crest – A bird of prey in flight, notably a harrier, in black and clutching a broken olive branch in its talons over a field of white. Family Colors are white, black and purple.
Words: "We do not yield."
Sir Jurian Vasolt – Patriarch, Knight and Castellan to Falkenfel of House Barnabas.
Siblings; Sir Paul Vasolt, 42, knight to House Barnabas, deceased; Samuel Vasolt, 33, outrider to House Barnabas; Niklos Vasolt, Armorer to House Barnabas; Ilse Fagan, 29, wife of Luther Fagan, patriarch of House Fagan.
Ada Vasolt – Wife, 32 and born of House Lars.
Sons – Petyr Vasolt, 22, blacksmith to House Barnabas; Sigfrid Vasolt, 20, man-at-arms to House Barnabas; Aleksi Hill, 17, bastard and archer to House Barnabas; Gregor Vasolt, 14, squire to House Barnabas.
Daughters – Cecila Vasolt, 15, pledged to Stefon Barnabas, principle heir of Rudolf Barnabas, patriarch of House Barnabas; Margret Vasolt, 12, maiden.
Personality: Jurian is the eldest and head of House Vasolt, and he shows it. He possesses practiced discipline and a soldier’s heart, who reluctantly accepted the title of knight to appease his liegelord, Rudolf Barnabas, who wished to preserve the tradition of having the head of the Vasolt family serve as castellan, chief protector and warden to House Barnabas. Where many have often joked that the Vasolts are stubborn and hardnosed, Jurian betrays the contrary as both being quite cunning and often diplomatic to his foes. While he carries his family’s words with duty, Jurian never saw the sense in never granting mercy, even if it means he will never bend the knee to anyone else or turn coat. Jurian is fiercely loyal and dutiful as both a noble and soldier. While his enemies often see him as cool, distant and cold, his allies appreciate him as being methodical. However civilized Urodans think they are, they are Salvarian, and whatever mercy or softness Jurian or his enemies deem him to be, he still oversees and commands with an iron fist, often having his men fight savagely and granting mercy after the battle. To such an extent, that it has become known to all that is better to fight and survive the battle then ever attempt to yield to any of Jurian’s forces. Jurian dispenses justice readily and remains level-headed in all situations, choosing lateral thinking over whim. His ability to reason and common sensehas served both houses very well, both on and off the battlefield. To this day, Jurian’s rationale has served to counterbalance to his lord’s whimsy and what many are beginning to deduce as the onset of madness.
Appearance: Jurian is a tall, lanky man who looks considerably weathered and traveled. He possesses a well-trimmed beard and a well kept, rust-coloured mane which is often oiled. He is hairy and his long arms often give him a simian quality. He has a long forehead that shadows his piercing, blue eyes giving him a cold, calculating look that frequently disarms newcomers and acquaintances. He possesses the traditional Urodan nose, a prominent hawk nose that remains a clear indicator of his lineage. He possesses his share of scars from his years of battle.
Jurian is usually dressed in a black surcoat with similar attire, and in war he dresses in boiled leather and oiled mail, often in his house colors and sigil as per Vasolt-Barnabian tradition. He favors fighting with a longsword and shield.
Traits and Skills:
Educated - Jurian was tutored at a young age with others in the Vasolt and Barnabas houses as per tradition. He is literate and possesses a wide-range of knowledge of many things, preferring to know a little about many things then a lot about some things. This thirst for knowledge has given him a reputable and voracious appetite for books and literature.
Pagan – Traditionally, House Vasolt and Barnabas never bent to the will of the Church of the Ethereal Sway, never in any generation succumbing to the rule of what they often called the “King’s Lies” and in times of persecution, would carry their beliefs underground which became the fashion of many noble houses across Salvar. Even so, Jurian is a staunch believer in the old gods of Salvar and takes part in many of the rituals and affairs of a typical pagan at the time. His principal god of worship is that of Perun, the God of Lightning, Storms and War. He also belongs to the Rikstaag, a prominent cult of Perun worship.
This staunch belief in the old faith makes Jurian incredibly difficult and resistant to persuade and convert to other faiths. Something to be appreciated to other followers and loathed by any priest.
Soldier’s Heart – War is not faught in a vacuum, and any warrior who has ever taken another life sees this. Especially Jurian. A veteran of countless battles, and a civil war, the knight has taken many lives in order to preserve the peace and the way of life for both houses. Belonging to the houses that fought against the Church, but never swore fealty to the Vagarand who were often called the the King’s Pawns, Jurian especially saw his share of death and killing during the civil war. He carries his memories and experiences during war with a heavy heart, and some of the distasteful things he had to do in order to preserve the peace will haunt him for the rest of his life. He remains troubled and often does not speak of some of the terrible tragedies that befell him during many of the battles in the Civil War. At least, not to his loved ones.
Born Leader – Jurian is an excellent and dutiful soldier, with an incessant eye for detail. That being said, with his training and experience as a soldier and in war, Jurian is a seasoned veteran and possesses the knowledge and traits of a commander. He knows how to commit offensive and defensive attacks, lead any sizable force and does so with considerable cunning. His knowledge of tactics is encyclopedic and he possesses the skill of a leader to not only inspire his soldiers and instill discipline, but manage their daily affairs. He also has experience in logistics.
Warrior – Jurian is a warrior born and bred. He fights savagely and with aggression, while also having enough sense to live to tell about it. He has experience in all manner of weapons, both martial and siege, and knows how to use them in accordance with the principles of war. Jurian has an expertise in these weapons in knowing their uses, strengths and weaknesses, making him a force to be reckoned with on all sides of the battlefield.
Counting Coppers – A practice that he had often jested and slighted his liegelord, Rudolf, for being forced to deal with, Jurian eventually gained much needed experience in this area of managing finances of personnel, a castle and a fiefdom. He is experienced in taxing, finance and all matter of coin, as much as he loathed it at first, he eventually saw the power in coin and the truth that nothing will bring a lord to his knees faster then an attack upon his coffers rather then his walls.
Smithy – With a family reputed to be both fine warriors and blacksmiths, it wasn’t long before Jurian picked up the family trade. He has been trained by master armorers and has a knowledge of blacksmithing up to a journeyman level.
Knight - Jurian is an anointed Salvarian knight of Uroda, bearing all of the characteristics of a reputable, highborn warrior. Unlike many other countries, Salvar's knights do not swear their vows in the practice of their religion given state theocracy, but rather does so in accordance of the principles and rites established by Salvarian nobility. He is honor-bound and follows many of the same traditions that any knight must follow, however reluctant he was to take up the mantle, often seeing knights as pompous and swarthy then actual warriors. After many years, he wears the title and its honors proudly and does his utmost to preserve the image of a rightful knight rather then a spoiled one.
Abilities:
Swordsman - Jurian is a skilled warrior, and the first weapon he ever mastered was the sword. He fights aggressively, but also with discipline and cunning. On the battlefield, he is a terrible foe. He knows all manner of techniques, but with such skill over the blade, when using a sword he is 1.5x faster and stronger then a normal man.
Parry - Jurian can sufficiently parry and deflect blows with weapons he knows how to use. He is able to parry weapons used by those of equal or lesser level then he is, but has a more difficult time doing it with people more seasoned then he is. This knowledge extends to riposting, allowing him to parry and immediately follow with countering another person's attacks.
Archery - Trained in the principles of archery, Jurian is above average in the use of a bow and fairly accurate with what he chooses to feather. This familiarity and knowledge allows him also to better command archers in battle.
Equipment:
Madalrath - As follows the tradition of every son of the Vasolts when they come of age, they must take part in the crafting of their own blade. By this time, most males have already had enough experience at a smithy that they can make blades of journeyman quality. This was not Jurian's first blade. It is unusual for a blade forged by a boy to last longer then it takes for a fair maiden to lose their virginity. His first blade broke in practice. This blade, Madalrath, was forged by Rudolf Barnabas' personal armorer as both a replacement and gift to Jurian when he became sixteen years old. The blade has been reforged now and again, tempered with age and wear. It is a longsword made of plied steel and its oiled, leather hilt gives Jurian a firm grip. With its strength and pedigree, it is a very difficult blade to break.
Short bow - A bow made of yew, lacquered and oiled to give it more strength and durability, with string made from a horse's sinew. It is a sizable range for a short bow and is used by Jurian primarily during hunts. Comes with a quiver of thirty arrows that are known to be broadheads, but in times of war Jurian has also substituted them for bodkins.
Dagger - A steel dagger, nine-inches long with a hilt wrapped in black leather. Steel has been specially forged and layered to make it very difficult to break. Bears the Vasolt House insignia. Normally worn on Jurian's hip.
Hauberk - A coat of mail designed and fitted for Jurian specifically. Forged and assembled by his brother, a master armorer, Niklos. The mail is expertly made and consists of steel. It is worn over his person and tapers down past his thighs, protecting the knight in combat. This is a set item that includes a gorget, gloves, and coif attached to a steel plate cervelliere, acting as a protective skull cap.
Leather Armor fittings - Pieces of leather armor serving to protect Jurian where mail or plate is not practical to use. His leather armor is made from wolf hide, boiled and waxed to give it strength and ideal protection against blunt weapons. Pieces of this armor include a jerkin, bracers, boots, leggings, and gloves. These pieces are interchangable with mail, but most often is worn together.
Shield - A medium shield, large enough to protect most of his body from harm. Painted in House Vasolt's colors. Made of oak and steel.
Surcoat - Worn over his armor in times of war, it bears the sigil of House Vasolt. It is black like much of his other attire, with purple and white trimmings. He wears a doublet in the same style when not in armor.
