A Passenger
05-22-12, 12:01 AM
Name: Casey Coulton, but uses various aliases in place of his real name.
Race: Human
Age: 42
Appearance:
Casey is a tall, fit man who moves with purpose and scarcely wastes a movement. He walks calmly and with poise, taking in his surroundings and reacting to them with nary an outward reaction. He chews tobacco from a pouch he keeps well-supplied, stares intensely through muddy green eyes, is inquisitive and thoughtful, and wears only clothes which provide a purpose or form of protection. He can often be seen wearing a filthy, brown leather wide-brimmed hat over equally filthy, black hair.
Casey is able to speak fluently in Althanas' common tongue and has some knowledge of various other languages, though not enough to converse. He is unable to read or write.
Weapons:
Garland: A magical rifle passed down through generations, Garland is a flintlock-style rifle which is incapable of firing those elusive, expensive bullets required by mundane firearms. Instead, it fires projectiles of a magical nature through use of an innate ability that Casey possesses. All of Garland's abilities or potential uses will be listed under abilities.
A Knife: It's a knife! Made out of steel and used mainly for carving and skinning.
Armor: A single iron pauldron which covers a specific part of Casey's right shoulder, necessary for support when aiming Garland. Kept in place by a sturdy strap which wraps comfortably into the pit of his arm.
Skills:
Marksmanship: Casey is a capable shot when using rifle-like guns of medium weight and size, as adapt as someone who has trained moderately with such a weapon.
Brawling: A down-and-dirty fighter who isn't shy to take liberties, Casey has had a lifetime of struggles to hone his hand-to-hand abilities. He could take on an average citizen without getting terribly hurt, himself, but couldn't come close to matching up with a trained fighter.
Resourceful: Casey has some advanced abilities as a tracker, and is skilled at deducing information and clues from what might seem to be everyday items and occurrences. He has an almost supernatural knack for tracking down one person at a time, and a similarly canny ability to make himself scarce at a moment's notice.
Abilities:
Garland can only be fired a maximum of four times per day. It is possible for it to fire more, but forcing it to do so will risk damaging it. It requires a minimum of three minutes between firings. Unless otherwise stated, Garland's "bullets" travel at the same speed as a small-sized rock thrown from Casey's hand.
Burning Pellet: A pebble-sized projectile, glowing an ominous red, is fired from Garland. Upon impact the pellet detonates and disperses into magical flames, potentially setting the target ablaze and delivering a punch-like impact.
Stinger: A pebble-sized projectile which causes a momentary paralysis around the nerves it impacts, as well as delivering a punch-like force upon impact.
History
Casey remembers little of his early life, only that he was born into a family and society which espoused, above all, a necessity to never speak an untrue word and to always fulfill obligation. He has grown with a furiously-instilled desire to follow through on any commitment he makes, avenge any personal qualm or insult, and protect his gun.
The gun itself was not named by Casey nor his family, but was referred to as such for at least one hundred years before the birth of his parents, and fell into their hands generations prior for reasons nobody is sure of. Some say that the Coulton family won it in a contest, some say it was stolen, some say it was created by a demon in exchange for one unfortunate family member's soul.
This society existed in a reclusive village in southern Corone. As Casey grew, he learned that most families he knew of had a weapon of sorts which existed as a representation of their heritage and legacy, displayed with great care in an important room in each house. Some families were quick to tell of the history of their special item, while others were more secretive.
Casey's Mother passed away young, and his Father became bedridden shortly after, leaving a young Casey to fend for himself and a pair of younger Sisters, Maria and Tessa. He'd hunt and gather during the day, trying to maintain the household. Eventually after a routine day of trapping small game, Casey came home to find his Father and Tessa dead, while Maria writhed on the living room floor in agony, trying to scream but unable to do so. She managed to utter what she could, and Casey learned that she'd been raped and left for dead with a bullet in her chest. All she could muster upon further inquiry was that the man who'd done this to her was a young man from the village, red-headed.
Only moments after Maria's dying gasps, Casey discovered that several villagers had seen the man fleeing the area. It was Lloyd Ridley, someone about whom the last of the Coultons knew nothing, and had no time to ask about.
He took the time to remove Garland from the mantle on his family's wall, but not the time to bury his family. He chased after Ridley with all the strength he could muster. And hasn't stopped.
