Okay, so I just got back from Cloud Atlas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWnAqFyaQ5s) and it was freaking awesome and now I'm upset that I have obligations and can't sit down right this second to plan an amazing ensemble cast and write an epic novel of epicness. (breathes)
So, who else is really into going to the movies? Or heck, watching them in general? What have you seen recently that you'd recommend to others? What're you excited about for future releases?
As far as this year's releases I'd say, besides the obvious (I won't get started on all that Marvel stuff), I can't recommend enough that people go watch Lawless (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zl7S1LaPMU). As underwhelming as Shia LaBeef was as a sideshow monkey in Indiana Jones, don't be put off. It's a real treat.

I live so far away from a cinema now, it's become impractical. I have to wait for DVD, download, or make the effort.
I will be going to considerable expense to see Skyfall this weekend, though, very excited!
I'll write a longer review of some recent film gems when it's not 1am nearly!

The last movie that we saw that wasn't in the second run theatre was Brave, and it was fantastic. Of course, it had very strong mother-daughter themes, I watched it two days before my deceased mother's birthday and all my creys.
Now that Brave is in the second run theatre, which is just down the street from our house and only 2 bucks, I have a feeling that I need to go watch it and cry with the added intensity of preggo hormones added to the batch because WHY NOT?

Aww :( I'm so sorry about your mother...
And I really liked "Brave"! Girls with weapons are awesome!

I was suspicious and cautious about Cloud Atlas, because I didn't have a good experience with the book. Having watched the trailer, I guess it's safe to say it's my sort of film - will have to watch it, and perhaps re-read the book as I did so much younger, and less open to non-sci-fi fantasy sword pwn epics.
Brave was adorable. I have mixed feelings about it as Pixar's first feature starring a girl and they had to go the oppressed tomboy route, but the mother/daughter relationship was fantastic and the world needs more Scottishness.
For other new animation I strongly recommend Paranorman; while it's less shiny-Pixar-fanciness, it's a really surprising and adorable movie. I might be biased since it takes place in a fictional version of Salem, MA and it reminds me so much of when I lived there, but it's seriously great. I also want people to see it to support the studio who made it so they continue making stuff!

My best friend really loved Paranorman and that's one that I really want to see.
Zook and I went and saw Wreck-It Ralph last night at a midnight showing with some of our gaming friends. I really loved it. It's a pretty good goofy laugh movie, tons of hilarious gaming references. The short that played at the beginning was really adorable too.
The new Spiderman was ass. I mean, the old ones were ass too, but the new one almost made me miss the old ones. That's the most recent new movie I wasted time on, and some two hours of my life I'm not getting back.
As far as this year releases go, all I'm really waiting for is the Hobbit.
Unrelated to this year releases, though, what do you guys think about Disney purchasing LucasFilms (and LucasArts, and ILM)? Anybody likes the idea of an Episode VII?

I can't wait for "The Hobbit"! I absolutely love LOTR!
And I really like "Star Wars" and I might realy like the new movie. I hope Ahsoka Tano and Lux Bonteri will be in it though...

The new Spiderman was ass.
You, sir, are ass! The Amazing Spiderman was, for want of a more apropos word, amazing!
And as for Episode VII, I really hope it features Leia being trained as a Jedi by Luke, and the founding of the New Jedi Order. I do hope, though, that they cast properly, and don't make Luke be one of the Jonas brothers or something, and Leia be played by Selena Gomez.
EDIT: BlueGhost, you do realize that Order 66 happened and Ahsoka Tano is dead with the rest of the Old Jedi Order, right? Episode VII will happen after the events of the original trilogy (IV, V, VI) and the end of the Galactic Empire.
I'm excited about the idea of a new Star Wars trilogy. Loved the original three, and for the most part I liked the prequels as well (didn't care as much for the second one though). I don't really care who owns what as long as the movie is good. Disney has done well with Marvel from my point of view, so there's reason enough to be hopeful.
Looking forward to seeing Skyfall (James Bond, nuff said), Flight (Denzel Washington, nuff said), and The Man With the Iron Fists (Russell Crowe, nuff said, and well-made martial arts movies usually appeal to me anyway). Interested in Cloud Atlas, though I doubt I'll see it in theaters. Taken 2 is one that I'll watch on cable at some point.
I think that's about it for now.
Either the new Star Wars films will be disappointments like the last three (which at this point is like "whatever"), or they'll be as awesome as Avengers. Only time will tell!
A friend who works for LucasArts said that during their meeting of the announcement they said everything will keep going as usual, no big changes or layoffs planned. That says a bit about how they're going to run the show, at least.
Also, I saw Wreck-It Ralph tonight and while it wasn't the best movie ever, it was pretty cute. On par with Hotel Transylvania, I think, and they did neat things with animation techniques. And Paperman? SO CUTE (though I thought it was gonna go The Birds for a minute there).

Silent Hill was better than the reviews give it credit for. Probably going to see Wrck-It Ralph soon, if I can scrounge up the money for me and the kids to go.
I loved the first Silent Hill. While I probably won't go to the movies for the second one, I'll definitely catch it on BluRay or something.
As for the Star Wars, I don't think the next movie necessarily needs to follow the Lucas outline, meaning that the next three movies would be the sequel trilogy. I mean, they probably will be because Disney will try to suck the most money out of the franchise, and what better way than to continue with the same story? And while I think it would be interesting to see how things with those well known characters would pan out, there's a whole lot of other stories in the expanded universe that would make for great movies. Just take the KotOR games as an example. Setting a movie in an Old Republic setting could make for some awesome stories. A full blown war with the Sith and extremely powerful Force users would at least make for some awesome fights.
Also, I'm sorry that I didn't like Spiderman. I guess needless reboots with flat support characters that deal with teenage bullshit just don't appeal to me anymore.

I actually thought that it would've been better off being called The Acceptable Spiderman, or perhaps The Alright Spiderman.
Because that's exactly what it was.
Personally I am looking forward to The Hobbit and City Of Bones. The second is part of a series based in The Mortal Instruments book series by Cassie Clare. It is YA, but I find that most of the books geared toward adults are either tediously written to impress us with how smart the writer is, or overly graphic and depressing. I am terrified to see the new Paranormal Activity movie with my roomies, but they thrive on terror. Silent Hill is more my bag, but I am too scared to watch it. /wimp
I must say, though, I'm annoyed they're adding Legolas and other characters into the Hobbit that weren't in the book. Like Tolkien never gave them enough to work with? Goddamn it!
As for books, though, the latest Brent Weeks book is out in a few days here. The follow-on from the Black Prism. Any of you who have read the Night Angels Trilogy will know how talented this sod is, so with baited breath, I wait.

adding Legolas and other characters into the Hobbit
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/wikipedian_protester.png
Eh, there is some room for Legolas, considering the imprisonment in Mirkwood. Not unlikely he would be there. I like that Peter puts elements from The Silmarillion into the movies to give a more complete picture. So, we wait and hope, as with all movies based on books.
Touché, but it still annoys me.
It's one of those little things is all. =/ I mean, yeah Thranduil is his Dad, so his making an appearance isn't impossible, but I can't help but feel they only did it to bring in the crowds who'd recognise him from LoTR. "Oooo Orlando Bloom!"
I'm sure there's a dash of the marketing junk involved, but I tend to be more of an optimist. As long as he doesn't go dumb like Eragon, it can't be too bad. And seeing my childhood dreams come to life is definitely a cool idea.
Ok, I have to agree with you there luv.
As soon as they made the first Lord of The Rings film, I was slightly irritated they hadn't started with The Hobbit. But, as they say, good things come to those who wait.
Yeah. That upset me too, but legalities suck like that. Remember the cartoon version from ... the 70's? 80's maybe? That was the reason for the out-of-order presentation.
Oh, dear God, that was horrible/ epic!!
I agree with both of those sentiments.
I'm not terribly worried about the Hobbit. There were some inconsistencies in the Trilogy as well and the movies were no worse for it. In fact, I feel that at most times I think they benefited from it. LotR has a tendency to get a bit boring at places. Shit, if it took Frodo in the movie the same amount of time to arrive to Bree as it did in the book, we'd probably have like nine movies. :P

I think it's gonna be good

One cannot simply make a trilogy from the hobbit... probably just a money thing. After LoTR went massive someone realised they could prequel it.
As for movies... I am looking forward to Wreck it Ralph, I think i nearly had a fit when I saw the ad for it in the cinemas. As for recent movies, I just watched [Rec] which was the original to the movie Quarantine, and much better. I watched Quarantine afterwards and was very disappointed. It seems they removed some of the subtly of some of the parts, and failed to really humanise the characters.
The Secret Life of Arrietty was a recent-ish movie I watched, I can't recommend it more. I currently have Ponyo, Tales of Earthsea (loved the books), Five Centimetres a Second and Children who listen to voices from deep below. I flicked through the last two and they were freaken beautifully drawn.
Non-anime, I saw Argo a few days ago, it was very good. I also saw Moonrise Kingdom, that was spectacular. Great acting, amazing directing and visuals, just fantastic. If you only see one movie, check it out.

Five Centimetres per Second is beautiful. Not simply the animation, which is absolutely impeccable, but the story in particular - it's by far my favourite piece of visual media in any form.
I can't recommend it enough.
"At what speed must I live. that I might see you again?"
I saw Five Centimeters Per Second in a double feature with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Though the former had really high quality animation, I liked the latter better story-wise. I don't really watch anime regularly, but I'd definitely recommend TGWLTT to anyone who just likes a good animated feature.
Speaking of good anime, the only stuff I catch religiously is Studio Ghibli's features. I finally saw From Up on Poppy Hill recently and it was super cute.

An invincible man in underpants and a cape, with genitals that can fold steel like paper?
You bet your arse I am!
I'm a big fan of Snyder's work. If anyone can make Superman cool (and it takes a lot to make a guy running around in red underwear look cool), it's him. Superman is probably the least favorite superhero of mine after Spiderman (the new one sucks even more gonads, and I don't care what the critics say). But I'm very interested to see Man of Steel.
He doesn't even have red underwear in this one! Or, well, maybe Lois finally showed him that he's supposed to wear it UNDER the suit like a normal person.
But yes, he's one of my least favorites as well, but this take looks intriguing.
Witchblade
05-27-13, 04:34 PM
Superman is definitely not one of my favourite superheroes. I just don't think a practically invincible guy is a great hero. But the new movie does look pretty sweet and Kevin Costner is in it. I like him. I'll probably bribe one of my friends who still works at the theatre to get me in for free. Or just walk in when someone I know is on the podium, lol.

My favourite "superhero" of all time is, without a doubt, John Constantine.
Hellblazer.
Sadly, you Yanks already raped the character of Constantine, with the Keanu Reeves movie.
I can't even begin to describe all the myriad fuck-ups that were made with that movie.
As a stand-alone concept, fine. Dandy. But based on the real Constantine (pronounced Constan-TINE, not Constan-TEEN), it is a travesty.

Aren't those two, brothers? It's kind of like a Broke Back Mountain version of Valhalla.
Luned, I also enjoy movies. I like classic movies from 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 or 70 years ago. I especially enjoy era films set in some military history drop back or focused on a specific event in military history. I enjoy comedies and romance as well. With that said, I enjoyed "Pearl Harbor" while many of my male contemporaries did not; their not into romance. I don't care for the horror genre, but do enjoy a good psycho thriller and will watch Drama as well. I enjoyed Dream House with Daniel Craig, but wouldn't care for any of the Saw movies. Making a scary movie just for the sake of showing someone getting killed doesn't sit well with me.
Current movies, I'd like to see are Ender's Game and Escape Plan. I'm a sucker for Action/Adventure. I've seen every Stallone and/or Schwarzenegger movie out there. :)
The most recent movie I've seen is Captain Phillips. I recall tracking this story in the news four and a half years ago when it first happened. I had several ideas for RP threads based on that story. They never came to fruition. Tom Hanks employs his usual God-like acting ability with this role. This is a must see movie!

Just to point out that the Japanese subtitles in Luned's link make no mention of complete closure. Rather a temporary pause on production activities while they restructure, with possible (probable?) disbanding of their permanent animator team (i.e. they'll return to working on a more ad hoc basis like they did pre-Porco Rosso).
Looking at Japanese news sources reinforces this view - as Hysteria hinted at, making animated films nowadays tends to be a bit of a gamble and difficult to justify employing a full animator team on...
