Alternate Realities
“May we meet again in another life.”
We have all felt it, if only for a fleeting moment: that sense of wondering what life would have been like had we been born in another time or place or an entirely different reality. Inevitably as writers, we ask these same questions about our characters. What would the noble knight or clever wizard be like had they been born in modern-day Earth, the far future, or any other alternate world?
This contest asks each participant to explore this question by writing a story about entirely different versions of his or her Althanas character. The alternate character must exist entirely within the chosen setting and genre, but the nature of both is entirely up to each writer. Do you want to explore alien planets or survive the end of the world? Will your character fight crime in the dirty streets of Chicago or hunt werewolves in a dark, supernatural version of Europe? To combine two cliches, the choice is yours and only your imagination is the limit. Entries will be scored using the Althanas Rubric, with special attention paid to the creativity and depth of each setting and how effectively and authentically the chosen genre is executed.
The Rules
1.) All entries must be short stories between 2,000 and 8,000 words in length.
2.) All entries must take place in a setting other than Althanas; I also recommend not simply using another traditional fantasy setting. Each entry must involve an alternate version of a registered character belonging to the entrant.
3: Please use a professional literary format (IE: use all the same font and color, though italics and bold are fine).
4.) One entry per member.
5.) Christoph (that's me) will judge these entries using the Althanas Rubric. I welcome mature questions and comments regarding the results, but all rulings are final.
6.) All entries must be posted in this thread by 11:59 PM EST on February 4th, 2013.
7.) I will reveal the results within two weeks of the contest's end. First and second place will receive 1,000 GP and 500 GP respectively, funded by me. Furthermore, the winner gets to request a boon from me -- this can involve writing a quest or battle with you, reviewing a piece of writing, or something else of that nature within reason (I give good foot rubs). Finally, based on the precedent from my previous contest, participants should receive EXP equal to that of any Vignette entry.
Good luck!

PS: If you like what I'm doing and wish to support the continuation of my contest series, feel free to donate some GP to the cause if you feel so inclined. It would most helpful. :)
