A simple task. Talen had been sent to Underwood to achieve a simple task; get information. Things that seem simple however never are, and the youth found himself trapped by that most unpredictable of things; friends. In what could only be described as a spectacular failure at gathering information, Talen had joined a group of hunters. Not only had he learned nearly nothing about the current situation in Underwood, he had barely escaped with his life from the gaping maw of three werewolves. That's where the unpredictability of friends comes in. Talen had managed to distract one of the werewolves, and bind another. Thanks to Talen, five of the ten survived. The group, who had originally seen Talen as a joke saw him in a new light, a light of respect. They had even given the youth a pair of werewolf skin slippers. They still called him by the nickname he had earned after solving a bakery robbery, ‘Bun’, but it was tinted with affection. Talen went out with the group a number of times more, without an insistence like the first time. Thanks to the effort of the group many, many animals now filled the smoke shacks of Underwood.

“Bun! Tell us about self.” Vlad, the giant hunter from somewhere north looked like someone had crossed a bear with a mountain, but he never seemed to lose his cheer and he smiled a broad smile under his bushy moustache.

The hunters had come in late and headed straight to the local Inn after depositing their catch of quail and rabbits. The hunters Talen met on his first trip were all there, Red, the fiery haired tracker, Regan, the serious leader, Shaw, the huntress that treated Talen like a little brother, Rea, the quiet female and of course, Vlad. Since the first ill-fated trip more hunters had come and gone, but none were as close to Talen as these five.

“There's not much to tell.” Talen shrugged and was going to let it drop but Shaw punched him in the arm. Talen had realised quickly that hunters (and huntresses for that matter) enjoyed physical communication of that sort, “Well I grew up in Scara Brae, but spent most of my life travelling around as a performer. I would make shadows dance and play and people would give me money.”

“Like shadow puppets, but without the cloth and light yes?” Vlad sometimes said things that Talen didn't understand at all.

“Yes.” said Talen.

“So you never knew your parents?” Shaw seemed shocked.

In truth Talen had found out quite recently that he didn't have parents, at least not in the way normal people did. However, explaining to a group of hunters and woodsmen that you are in fact a sentient being housed within an artificial body of shadow energy that mimicked flesh and bone didn't seem like the way to go.

“Never.” said Talen.

“I had parents,” Vlad said matter of flatly, “and seven brothers. Also had four sisters.”

“Somehow I couldn't see it anyway else.” Talen lifted his cup of ale into the air. “To Vlad's family!”

“Vlad's family!” Chimed in the others, a small tear formed in the corner of the giant man's eye.

“Good family!” Vlad emptied the rest of his drink in one gulp, “Mother would catch and skin bear for feast if here now.”

Talen's eyes blinked open, then slammed shut. The youth groaned and rolled around in the bed and pulled the covers over his face. The day was starting, but Talen wanted no part in it. The choice however was not his.

“UP!”

The blanket was cruelly ripped off Talen and the youth twisted around widely trying to hide from the morning. Reluctantly he opened his eyes. More reluctantly he breathed and swallowed. His throat felt like he had decided to eat fire. Each breath felt like rack being pulled up his oesophagus. The boy scrunched up his eyes and blinked a few times.

“Shaw?”

“Get up Bun.”

Talen sat up slowly and looked around. He was not in his bed. The youth realised that it was in fact Shaw's bed.

“What's going on?” He ask, afraid of the answer.

“It seems you had a bit too much to drink last night. One moment you were chatty and the next, you were out like a light. I was the one that got stuck with you.” Shaw seemed less than impressed, and Talen could feel something coming, “Smell anything Bun?”

Talen sniffed the air. It smelt like stale beer and vomit. Talen's heart sank.

“Smells like I have some cleaning to do?” Offered the youth.

“Oh no, you have a LOT of cleaning to do.”

“Ahh...”

The day rolled on, and it didn't take Talen too long to clean up his extensive mess. Shaw's disposition had softened a lot after her room was one again clean and the pair walked down the road towards the Watchhouse. Generally the group only went out every second day, but someone had a special request for the group. It was just passed nine in the morning when they arrived, and already the place was a flurry of activity. The two cut through the crowd and to the other hunters.

“Nice of you two to join us.” said Red with smile.

Shaw answered with a deathly stare. Seeing that the the group was now complete, a small man in an oversized white coat coughed to get their attention. The six pairs of eyes belonging to Talen and the hunters turned onto him.

“Greetings! My name is Joseph Reginald Eingleberry. A few days ago I approached the Town Council about a certain type of fortification I would like to create. The design is simple, but I need some things to make it. Now I have managed to acquire most of these for myself, at personal cost I might add, bu-”

“Will you get too it!” Shaw snapped.

“Er right.” Joseph's eyes started to gleam, “The Acid Bee.”

“Waaa?” Red stifled a laugh, “I've heard of them, but they are only in Raiaera and we are not going into Raiaera.

“While the bees did originate in Raiaera, there were reports of a hive deep within the forest. It seems that either the bees are spreading out into greater Althanas, or perhaps a freak event brought them here. I suppose someone might have been crazy enough to bring one here.”

“What is this Acid Bee? We not Bee Keepers.” said Vlad.

“The Acid Bee ranges in size from a watermelon to a small horse. The 'hive' as it were, will be quite large I expect.” said Joseph.

“And how would we go about capturing one of these bees?” asked Red.

“Well, technically I don't need the whole bee, just the acid. I am working with very fine components and I need the acid to make very small incisions al-”

“How would we go about harvesting this acid?” this time Regan interrupted.

“Oh, well you kill or restrain the bee, preferably without damaging the abdomen. Then you make a cut along the underside of the abdomen. The sac should be exposed under the layer of skin.”

“And transporting these the acid sac?” asked Red.

“Sacs, I need at least three, preferably five. To carry them I have prepared five special bags that the acid won't burn through, each bag should be able to hold four sacs. Even if you tare some, they should be sufficient.”

“Happen to make any cloths the same way?” asked Shaw.

“Uh, no. That would be impossible, the bags are lined with tyro-glysophate.”

The hunters and Talen all responded with completely blank looks.

“Oh, it dissolves when exposed to water. The vapour from your skin would dissolve it all in an hour. So... is there anything else you would like to know before you head off?”

“Who said we are going anywhere?” Shaw crossed her arms defiantly, “Acid Bees are far from what we normally hunt.”

“I heard honey make a lot of money.” Vlad rubbed his moustache.

“And the city could definitely used my devices.” Joseph added.

“What exactly do they do?” Asked Talen.

“They detect movement over a large area be measuring sound. You see the movement of air can be correlated back to a beginning and a picture then displayed on a pool of liquid enchanted by light magic.”

“How big is it?”

“Well the one I'm making is about the size of a room. They can be smaller, but the area they detect would also be smaller.”

“Sounds quite useful. Tell you what, you make us each a portable version of that as payment and we'll get you your acid.” Regan thought for a second, “And something to collect some honey with. In case it come up.”

“Very well,” Joseph thought for a moment, “The Citywatch will also be sending three men with you, and one of my assistants will accompany you too.”

“We don't have time for freeloaders.” Shaw had refused to uncross her arms.

“The Watch will provide supplies, horses and a wagon for the trip, they will want to ensure their investment is safe.”

“Alright. We'll get you your acid.” Said Regan.
