As the small silver bell above the door sent a small tink! ringing throughout my store, I looked up from the register.
He wore a well-traveled leather jacket and a hat with the brim pulled slightly over his eyes, both averting suspicion and at the same time attracting it.
Nell simply looked at me. "I need you to go out back for a second and check on our stock of Ni'Jian's new novel. Bring up a few copies, please. The table by the door is looking a bit empty." The bubbly blond left without a word.
The stranger approached the counter, and without a word, set a small paper package in front of me. I took it and tore the tweed bindings off, unveiling a little order I had put in a few days ago through an old contact.
In my hands sat a pair of steel knuckles, the silver finish catching a glint of afternoon sunlight coming from the shop windows. On the arc formed by each particular knuckle sat a quarter-inch, square-sided, unpainted mythril spike, four spikes per set.
A thin, devious smile crossed my face. Without looking at the stranger, I said, "They're beautiful. How much do I owe you?"
