So, I don't know much about how this world works and I'm looking to get some tips on how to develop my character more. I was wondering where I should look to find info on what items I would have access to and the limits of abilities and skills I could have... Please and thank you!

Also, HI!
Hi there, and welcome to Althanas :)
You can find a walkthrough for character creation here (http://www.althanas.com/world/faq.php?faq=charmakefaq#faq_rog_char_abilities), but keep in mind that it's all rather open; so long as your PC isn't overpowered, they will probably be allowed (although this is ultimately the decision of the Realm of Greeting Staff). New/level 0 characters can have a maximum of 3 abilities, and as a rule of thumb, statistic modifiers like speed and strength cannot be more than double that of an average human at this level, and spell-like abilities are restricted to minor cantrips (sorry for the ambiguity, I'm not too clear on the specifics there). Any items you have will generally be restricted to low-tier materials (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?22255-The-Bazaar-FAQ&p=178930&viewfull=1#post178930) like oak, leather and iron. However, if you have few items and/or skills, you should be allowed one or two steel/yew level bits of equipment.
If you're interested in checking out the world's politics and geography, you can find region information through the wiki. However, if you already have an idea for the character, we may be able to point you in the right direction area-wise. Last of all, don't worry about getting your character completely perfect when you put it up for registration - the RoG staff will review it and give you any help you need.
Hope that helps!
- O.
Welcome to the site! Otto covered your questions, but I'd just like to add a reminder that you can post your ideas here or drop by the chat if you want suggestions/feedback before you finish putting your character together. Hope you like it here!

Awesome! Thanks! A few questions were answered, basically I was interested in making a character similar to Malcome Reynolds from 'Firefly' combined with someone from this manga I like, called Gintama... I don't think you'd know exactly who either of them are but basically I wanted to give him a gun a cunning mind and a crew. And as for regions I wanted to put him in a war right from the start, one like firefly. A civil war kind of thing and where he gets betrayed and then his side loses. Not sure if anything like that is going on right now or has gone on before (I'm working under the impression that time here is liquid, lemme know if im wrong)
Guns aren't allowed for starting characters, since they're so uncommon here you have to earn them once you've leveled up and established yourself. The rest should be doable, though.
As for wars, Corone just had one (info might be in the wiki), some people are trying to brew something up in Salvar, and about a decade ago there was the Corpse War in Raiaera (which wasn't a civil war, but pretty festive all the same). Yes, time is liquid, so you can work out timing however you'd like.

Ah, well i figured he would get a gun at the end of the war, before he goes off on his own. I was working on the idea of the war being the first big thing i write, but i really need to know if it's possible for me to get that gun at the end... Also i was wondering if even though i don't have a gun myself, could I still use them in story? were any of the wars fought with guns? (SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS!!)
Yep, we do indeed use 'liquid time', but I haven't really got a handle on how it works.
As for the civil war, we are still running some threads from the recent one in Corone. Here (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?25374-Honor-Duty-Glory&p=207305&viewfull=1#post207305)'s a link to my reply to another person who recently made a similar enquiry - you should find some helpful info there. Corone is/was big on trading, and has a strong maritime tradition as far as I'm aware, so it would be a good spot for a ship's captain and his/her crew. However, I don't believe guns would be allowed for a new character, although they are available Althanas.
EDIT: sorry, I wrote this reply before I knew Luned had put hers up. If you're looking to acquire a gun over a thread, the Bazaar may be the place to go to check out the rules. Keep an eye on this thread, too, as someone who handles such things may give you an answer here if they stop by to say hello.

Hello Captain.
Welcome, though a little belated, to Althanas.
Guns can feature in quests, providing they're suitable. Your character will not be able to 'earn' one for several levels. You may have the proficiency to wield it, long before then, but the restriction is primarily for when you face off against other players.
As a side note, Alerar, the land of the dark elves, is the primary stomping ground for guns.
Do feel free to ask more questions, we're an amicable lot! :D

YAY! thank you Mordelain and Otto and Luned! (in backwards respective order) Umm, I don't mind getting a gun later, I guess I'm pretty much ready for action, but I have one thing to ask, which would be is there a war in recent times where one side were the "bad guys" but won?

That depends entirely on perspective. The Ixian Knights succeeded in the their efforts to return Corone to relative peace.
The government in Salvar returned to the barons, and toppled the Church (a bit of a grey war in terms of which side was 'good' and which was 'bad').
There is nothing 'obvious', sadly. It depends what you have in mind for your character's motives, and for their plot, so to speak.
We can advise further if you enlighten us!

So if you've seen firefly I want to make a character similar to that of malcome reynolds. Basically I want to make put him in a war where he believes in his side and that their cause is just/right and then not only loses but after he does a good job and succeeds in his mission his allies leave him to die and give up the war efforts. I plan on going through a bunch of posts where he does odd jobs and participates in battles and such. Eventually i would like him to participate in a battle (playing a critical role) where he achieves victory in battle but his side loses the war... any tips?

Hi! Thanks for the welcome!
Your welcome :)
Maybe you could have your character meet the co-leader of the enemy and while you are able to defeat him/ her, everyone else on your side looses. I know, it's not the most creative suggestion...

still, a welcome idea, thanks! I might use something like that, maybe make him into a rival!
