History: Over the last year, Oliver Midwinter has had a rude awakening. He arrived in Radasanth in search of a man. He sought his father, Gideon Midwinter (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?24457-Destiny-amp-Danger-(Solo)&highlight=). Bereft, aggrieved, and lost, he fell in with a man called Baxter Arlington (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?23922-The-Vociferous-Hunger-(Closed)&highlight=). The debonair man promised to help the youth find whom he sought, but the demon tried to conceive, and consume, the wily wayward witch. Oliver fled their encounter in tears, his world torn to shreds and trampled on by fate.

With Albion firmly left behind (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?23492-The-Exile-(Level-One)-(3-0)&highlight=), and his search no more near completion, he did what he thought well. Oliver sought a mentor. He searched the city, worked in kitchens, stables, and taverns to earn modest coin, and finally, he found someone who would take him in. The sagely sorcerer, Pastel, allowed the boy to become his apprentice. Resigning himself to a different destiny than the one he had worked hard to achieve, Oliver soon found himself engrossed in learning. All thoughts of witchcraft, and sin, and angels left his mind. He became every bit the sorcerer’s apprentice his father would have wanted him to be.

Six months quickly turned into eight, and eight turned into ten. Pastel finally found it in his withered old body to give Oliver the first trial of initiation. The trial was the Subtle Body (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?25152-The-Subtle-Body-(Solo)&highlight=), and Oliver passed in style. He had allowed his life to become one long library session. He mastered the basics, the rudiments, and practised his sorcerous abilities gifted to him at birth. Soon enough, he abandoned his patterned vestments. He buried his book of shadows out in the groves and plains beyond Radasanth’s city limits. He left them to rot with the smoking ruins of a post war island.

He returned to the home he now called his own, and requested he learn new spells. Pastel, at first, refused. Oliver was not ready to expand his repertoire. He was too young. He was too foolish. Oliver bemoaned every waking moment, but he did not give up. He washed floors. He scribed new books. He did every task the sorcerer set him, however mundane.

Then, a month ago, Pastel changed his mind. He allowed Oliver a single chance to prove himself. If he succeeded, then pastel would allow Oliver to wield his own sorcerer name. Though he would still be an apprentice (and would remain so for many years), once he had his own name, a new name, he would be respected and people would pay attention to him in the magical community of the city.

All Oliver Midwinter had to do to earn that name was locate Gideon. He then had to forgive, and best him in a duel.

Personality: Inquisitive is a word that sums up Oliver Midwinter. He is bright, bushy-tailed, and ever eager to explore. He is a little shy and meek and easily intimidated, but this comes more from living in a house full of women and being the youngest more than fear. His personality can be tempestuous, violent if angered, and he lacks some of the emotional control someone of his age from Althanas proper has. This is due to the lack of opportunities to develop social skills beyond the adult realm he inhabits. There were few young people in the coven. He can get on pleasantly enough with those of his age, even if he remains a little distant and ambivalent as to wherever or not he is liked or cared for. He is loyal, dedicated, and utterly subservient to the needs and requirements of his present master.

Skills: Oliver’s upbringing was full of life lessons. He had to uphold the household, his education, and the tradition of his family. Because of this, he is well versed in lore, practical skills, and the day-to-day abilities required surviving independently in the wider world. He can multitask, unlike most men, and this gives him a well-rounded resume.

Knowledge (Herbalism): Through necessity, and intrigue, Oliver has an adept knowledge of the properties of herbs. He can apply flora found in bazaar and market and wilds on Scara Brae to a wide variety of uses. Primarily, they are for ailments mild mannered in nature. He can tend to stomach bugs, fevers, and light wounds. In turn, he can grow, tend, and cure diseased crops and knows much of their agricultural background.

Knowledge (Magic): Adept understanding of the principles governing magic has come quickly to Oliver. After a year of studying under Master Pastel, he has begun to grasp the more complicated theorem that underpins his abilities, his heritage, and the magical community at large. As such, he can apply logic and reasoning to magic, spells, and the people that practice them providing they are witchcraft, divine, or sorcerous in nature. By far, though a quick learner, he still has so much to go he has barely begun to scratch the service despite his relative insights.

Literate: Oliver has an adept reading, writing, and comprehension skill. From a young age, he learnt to read complex tomes, bibliographies, and vast lexicon laden with Herblore knowledge and the history of his people and the village he grew up in as a child. He has a steady writing hand, and a plain grasp of the common tongue. He can also speak High, the traditional language of human sorcery, and understands a little Tradespeak after spending the year in Radasanth. He is still very rusty with it, though.

Domestic: Average grasp of the rudimentary skills required to live. He can cook basic meals, repair clothing, whittle wood, light fires, and do similar domestic chores all children are taught, and enforced to learn as part of their ‘wholesome upbringing’.

Abilities:

The Heavenly Touch: Oliver can perform minor feats of telekinesis. He can stir a spoon in a cup, rustle paper, and write with a pencil without touching it. He can perform similar small motor functions with objects weighing 5lbs or less. All uses must abide by the laws of physics. He has become proficient at spiralling petals and small flecks of glass in a beautiful display. He can manipulate most of his spell components, create movement, and disturb objects to manipulate their construction – he can snap twigs, rip paper, and warm water.

The Heart Spark: Oliver can conjure small balls of flame that form in a spiralling and spiked pattern. Each requires two hands cupped together to summon, and a time-delay. Each causes moderate burns, and a small sphere of bright light on impact equal to a blunt impact from a well-lit torch. He can re-light small sources of flame by blowing on the wick or ember gently. With a clap, and a raucous expenditure of energy, he can extinguish all natural sources of fire within 30 feet twice per thread.

Stir the Winds: Oliver can always tell which way is North by raising his finger to a good wind. He can ‘catch’ a breeze and manipulate it around his body, as if he had caught a fireball from another wizard and were returning it full force. He can only catch breezes or winds that can rustle rye and perhaps knock leaves from trees in a weak storm at best. It has no offensive potential as of yet as it can only catch, reflect, control natural winds, and redirect them at the same speed and rate they strike him. It is useful for housekeeping, especially for dusting and drying linen.

The Angel’s Warlock: Oliver suffers from a powerful curse. This prohibits him from performing any spells that require a circle to work with. He is free from the three-fold law, but this comes at the price of permanently feeling rejected and exiled from his own past. It is a constant weight on his shoulders, which will crush him if he succumbs to the temptation of witchcraft again. He is one level higher against enemy magical abilities. His sorcery is potent and cannot be dispelled by anyone not at least three levels higher. He has, however, no resistance against spells himself.

Inventory:

Apocathery Jars
Travel pack
Candles
Woollen blanket
Masterwork Monocle
Light Leather Jerkin
Steel Greaves
Reinforced Arm Supports (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?25456-Costume-Change)
Parchment, quills, and inkwells
Small chambers in Radasanth (study room)

The Sorcerer’s Gavel: The Gavel is a clay ring enchanted to sustain a charge of Oliver’s Heart Spark ability. This allows him to cast the spar with a singular hand, much quicker than he would be able to manage (as it normally requires two hands and concentration). The charge fades with fatigue, or lack of sleep, or if Oliver is knocked unconscious.

Tomes of Learning: (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?25456-Costume-Change) Oliver has acquired two large parchment tomes. These books are resistant to water, light fire, and ink stains. They can, at will veil the contents from anyone Oliver does not wish to share his secrets and knowledge. The enchantments also prevent the books from degrading due to general wear, tear, and use.
