Caera Inress

Name: Caera Inress
Age: Unknown. Appears to be mid-twenties.
Race: Unknown. Appears to be human.
Hair Color: Dark brown
Eye Color: Gray
Height: 5' 5”
Weight: 130 lbs.
Personality: Caera is soft-spoken, gentle, calm. Having lived in the dreamworld for the greater portion of her life, she's intensely curious about reality, particularly its limitations, and she uses every spare moment to test and examine what's possible within her current environment. She has impeccable manners and while she does become a bit uneasy around new people or large groups, her desire to learn trumps her anxiety nearly every time. While she's eager-to-please, her strange background can leave her feeling out-of-place in the everyday world.
Appearance: Caera is of average height and slender build, with fair skin and dark curls that are often pinned back. She favors simple dresses so as to never overshadow the lady she serves. Her only regular accessory is an opal necklace that often seems to shimmer from within (see Equipment).
History:
“Hear me, young one.”
Caera's eyes sprang open, the interruption pulling her from her nightly meditation. Lady Ellyn's voice was soft as spring grass, but still unexpected. They had not planned to meet tonight, and Caera had not felt her enter the garden. It had been years since she had last failed to sense a visitor.
Pressing her palms into the dew-wet grass, Caera pushed herself to her feet. “My Lady?”
Caera couldn't pick out her figure amongst the shadows, even under the light of the full moon. Curious. A knot twisted in her gut. If Lady Ellyn wasn't in the garden, and all signs indicated that she was not, then she must have been speaking to Caera from outside the dreamworld. Caera licked her lips, only to find her mouth suddenly dry.
In all her time here - in all her life - the lady had only spoken to her from Outside a small handful of times, and each had trumpeted great change – when Adolus had been woken, when Lady Ellyn had contracted the fever that threatened her life, when Maricello had been lost to the nightmares . . .
“Tá sé am, Caera,” Lady Ellyn said. This time, Caera could see the stars flicker in time to her words. “You must wake now. You are needed.”
Wake. Caera swallowed heavily, her eyes still turned up to the sky. She had suspected as much. It was time to wake.
She had never before woken.
Caera had been born into this garden. She had grown up with the saplings and roses. While she was never sure how many years had passed since she'd arrived, she knew that none who left had ever returned. There had been few over the years - Adolus, Celme, Thestra. As children, they lived together in the common garden, and even as adults, with dreamspaces of their own, they had remained close. It had been five years since Adolus left, three since Celme, and two and a half since Thestra. She had not seen any of them since.
Only Caera and Minas remained, though Lady Ellyn had confided that she planned to create more dreamchildren once she was able to acquire all of the materials. Caera didn't know what had been needed to create herself, but Lady Ellyn made the supplies sound difficult to come by. She had told Caera only a little of the process, and always avoided the subject when Caera tried to learn more.
But now, it was time to wake, like the others had. Caera's vision swam around the edges, then settled again. Even as anxiety twisted in her gut, she couldn't help but feel exhilarated.
Her vision blurred again, and the garden was darkening. The shadows grew as the heavens dimmed. Goodbye, Caera thought, tears rising to her eyes. She wished she'd had more warning, had a chance to bid farewell to Minas and the garden.
Darkness, inky and complete, settled over her and, for a moment she could sense nothing, she wondered if waking would be her death.
But then she heard something – a rustle of fabric, a murmur. There was warm pressure on her upper arm.
Caera opened her eyes.
She was reclining on a bed in what appeared to be a small chamber. Lady Ellyn sat on the mattress next to her, and it was her hand that was gripping Caera's arm. She looked exactly as she did in the dreamworld – smooth blond hair, pale skin, the faintest traces of lines at the corners of her blue eyes. Caera could sense that she was weary, though, more so than Caera had ever before seen.
“Maidin mhaith,” the lady said.
“Good morning,” Caera replied, taking in the feel of reality. She inhaled deeply, stretching her legs, and pushed herself up. It was time to rise.
Skills:
Ettiquette: Like all of Lady Ellyn's charges, Caera participated in regular classes on manners and propeity.
Grace: While her focus has never been on the shadow arts, Caera is soft of step and agile. Years spent climbing trees and tiptoeing among the seedlings have left Caera confident in her body and its abilities.
Restful Meditation: Caera can access the dreamworld through meditation. When she does so, she wakes half as rested as she would have been had she been truly asleep.
Botanical Wisdom: A side effect of having spent so much of her life in a garden, Caera's botanical knowledge is formidable. She can identify all common plants, as well as many rare species native to Corone. Though she never had need of medicine or poison before, Lady Ellyn made sure that she knew the properties of each plant within the garden.
Lucid Dreaming: For Caera, the differences between dreaming and waking are slight. Though she cannot always control what she dreams of, she is always in control of her own actions within the dream.
Abilities:
Dreamviewing: When others fall asleep near Caera, she is able to watch their dreams as if they were a play. This can be done only if she is able to enter a meditative state in the vicinity of the dreamer. She is able to do this for only one person per night, but not if they are actively blocking her entrance through the force of their will.
Dreamshaping: While dreamviewing, Caera can nudge another person's dream in a particular direction. She cannot directly interact with the dreamer within the dream, nor can she change the dream in any specific way. However, with concentration, she can turn a nightmare into something pleasant . . . or something pleasant into something hellish.
Waking Dreams: Caera can call forth small creations from the dreamscape. These appear to Caera as well as to one other viewer, and they operate like a hallucination – they cannot cause direct physical harm that then appear only to herself and to one other viewer. They operate like hallucinations – they cannot physically harm anyone, but they will appear real to the viewer. She is only able to do this twice before she becomes too exhausted to continue. The ability will refresh after a night's rest.
Equipment:
Opal Necklace: This necklace allows Caera to communicate with Lady Ellyn. It shimmers softly when Caera is needed, and if she enters the dreamscape while it is shimmering, she will be able to meet with Lady Ellyn there.
