Ashley Turgor

2967

“I am dead, you are dead, and he is dead. Who is ‘he’? Well, if I knew that, you’d eat cake.”

Alias: Wizard Hallow
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 150lbs
Eye Colour: Yellow
Hair Colour: Black
Religion: None
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Occupation: Surgeon
Intelligence: Above Average
Literacy: Above Average

History: Anebrilith fell and with it, so too did the splendour of the College Arcana. Although Beinost rose quickly from the ashes of the war with the necromancer Xem’Zund, the providence of wizards and their place in Raiaera society did not. Some wizards went mad, corrupted by the void left by their kin and some fell from great heights to the trickery of the allure of cheating death. Ashley Turgor however resisted those temptations. He stands defiant yet bound in servitude in the necropolis of the city once proud and legendary throughout Althanas.

Resisting temptation and taking advantage of it however are to very different concepts. Ashley and many others like him took an oath when Xem’Zund fell in the dark in the radiance of the Lightbringers. They pledged to wield the forbidden art of necromancy to give life, not take it away and corrupt it. With that in mind the Order of Hem was born. It is this order that constructs the city of Anebrilith into its new form, the souls of the dead themselves tainting the cobblestones and giving structure to the ruined towers and boulevards.

Throughout his childhood, Ashley played with dead birds. He whispered secret lies to try to bring them back to life whilst his father was teaching in the College or his mother was out in the sunshine markets. He remained bitterly disappointed and permanently cradling skeletal wings until one day, when he was twelve, he could have sworn it had twitched! Apprehensive and excited Ashley recited the last words he had muttered repeatedly. With a rush of heat, the bird came to life for three glorious seconds before it turned back into a rotten bundle of bones and compost.

Of course, modesty is part of being a good wizard. You do not take responsibility for something that will get you killed. With that in mind, Hallow remained behind a mask. He found dark corners of the world in which he could indulge his fetish, and sealed himself away in the black iron cast in the forges of Alerar. When the Order of Hem found Ashley, it was a natural union of disciple and master, and they offered him the skills to hide his identity and his weaknesses from the world.

With their uniform, The Order of Hem is alike. Their silent movements on the crumbling walls become an omen, but a much-needed one. It lives on its secret wings untainted by the same troubles that befell the Death Lords, but for how long, none can say. He has undertaken the task of keeping the spirits of Beinost placated. Hallow as he is now named has remained anonymous and nobody knows his real identity except the other members of the Order. His life before he took the oath and finally gave in to his childhood fascination with death is a distant memory. His father died in the defence of the city and his mother died to tuberculosis.

Personality: Slow to respond and somewhat mysterious, Hallow is a calm, collected, and sombre individual. He is seemingly emotionless, although this might be because he chooses to hide his face behind his helmet. The muffled notation in his voice, compounded by his wizard tongue, leaves even the most talented body language and speech therapist confused. As far as loyalty goes, Hallow is as supportive of the College of Beinost as you can be without being part of the brickwork yourself. If you earn his trust, you earn it for life, and perhaps a good deal of time beyond.

Although a young wizard, he is remarkably understanding about his moral impact on the world. He is dedicated to his role in the Order, and will not be swayed or tempted to the darker trappings of necromancy. He is hard to corrupt, hard to tease, and hard to bribe. He has a lot to learn about interaction with others, alive or dead, and though he finds solitude and happiness in his long, silent work with the spirits of Beinost, a part of him is so curious about ‘people’ he often comes across childish, immature, and rude.

Skills:

Knowledge (Magic): Hallow has learnt the rudimentary theory behind sorcery, especially the schools used in the College of Beinost. This allows him to read and detect spells, disseminate them, and investigate them at an average level.

Knowledge (Wizardry): Even average knowledge of the College’s history, politics, and laws is a weapon in Raiaera against the power the wizards wield. Hallow knows most of the public legislation, and how to behave with other wizards.

Knowledge (Surgery): Ashley has an adept understanding of the theory behind surgery. He is able to mend broken limbs, stitch broken bodies, and bring people back from the brink of death (or send them there with precision).

Knowledge (Soul Stone): Ashley possesses a below average of understanding about soul stones (crystals to power undead such as golems and to create homunculus). He is far from being able to make such creations himself.

Abilities:

Spirit Sight: A wizard can see death where others cannot. A necromancer can hear, speak, and reveal death to others. A wizard unsure of him can be confused about what he is actually seeing at any one time, so Hallow has become slightly unhinged after things he has seen, and continues to see.

Imaginary Friend: Hallow works with a liche called Malefor Kolwezi. Wherever or not this cruel, pithy practitioner of necromancy is real is beside the point. The fact is, nobody else can see him, and react oddly to seeing Hallow talk to him.

Reveal Dead: At will, Hallow can pass on his sight to another through touch. The target will see any spirits in the nearby vicinity. They will hear their in coherent babbling, but be unable to understand, or communicate with them.

Compel Dead: With considerable effort, Hallow can compel the dead, and the undead, to walk into the afterlife. The stronger and more tormented the target, the harder the drain on sanity and stamina.

Aura of Frailty: Hallow emits a spherical aura of mind numbing and weakening sickness. At all times, the strength, stamina, and dexterity of anyone within five feet drop by 0.5. This includes Hallow himself.

Shadow Step: The Black Iron Hauberk allows Hallow to teleport through shadows. This is limited to Beinost. No other living soul may use it, but spirits and undead can follow him freely. It requires free hands to use.

Inventory: Ashley operates out of a ruined tower, one of three that once served as a hospital in Anebrilith. Two are inhospitable, but the Tower of Ravens holds a small library, theatre, study, kitchen, and bedroom. It has spell pouches, various cloaks and boots, surgical tools, bedding, towels, anatomical reference books, surgical knives, preserving balms, herbs, fluids, and all items required to fulfil his duties. Items of note listed below are worthless, and have no power in the hands of non-Wizards:

Wizard Hat: Ashley’s wizard hat is a fedora. It has a brown belt, in which he keeps feathers and heather. It does not have a true name yet, so Ashley refers to it as The Reluctant Hat. It has a mind and voice of its own.

Wizard Cloak: The Shadow Brand is made of the magic of death. It takes the form of a demi-cloak that can change length and shape via telepathic command. It resists flame and light (25% resistance) when willed once per day.

Wizard Grimoire: It contains spells and instructions needed to prepare corpses for resurrection. It is a black book with a gold trim clasp and a circle on its cover. He can conjure and exile it at will.

Surgeon's Props: (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?24238-A-Surgeon-s-Props&highlight=surgeon%27s+props) A briefcase made of yew, containing various wands and items required for soul stone creation and general medical practice. Hallow can conjure and exile it at will, and it locks with a simple steel clasp set with black spirals.

Black Steel Armour: (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?24238-A-Surgeon-s-Props&highlight=surgeon%27s+props) Black Steel body armour and helm bedecked with gold. The helm reveals nothing of his physical features. It protects him against the spirit world when using Shadow Step. He can conjure and exile it at will.

Several spell effects removed from items, abilities redacted, Aura now affects Ashley, too, and two skills amalgamated into the same category.

Previous profile here (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?23463-The-Surgeon-(Level-One)&highlight=Hallow), re-written to make readable and simplify.

Also added item purchased in the Bazaar.

I usually don't allow teleport without serious limitation when it comes to usage, but given the fact that it's only usable in Beinost, I will allow it.

The only other thing is really the new item you mention. Other than some name changes and descriptions, you seem to have the same items in the inventory. I might be missing something, though.

Refresh, I forgot to put it in - Surgeon's Case and the upgrade to the armour to steel.
