Wilfred
06-08-13, 07:17 AM
Name: Wilfred

Age: 4

Race: canine (Staffordshire bull terrier)

Gender: Male

Hair Colour: mottled (brown and black)

Eye Colour: dark brown

Height: 40cm

Weight: 16kg

Occupation: dog

Personality: smart, loyal, courageous, friendly to adults and children. Understands a few commands, and will do anything for mutton. Fully toilet trained. Looking for good home.

Appearance: Wilfred has the archetypical, stocky appearance of his breed, like someone had decided to compress a fully grown bull into something shorter than three feet. His brindle coat of short, thick hairs has a slight sheen to it when not obscured by accumulated muck and filth. He has deep, sorrowful brown eyes which nonetheless radiate warmth, but usually only when he thinks someone might have some food. Any other time, he generally looks something like this:

History: Wilfred isn’t too sure about his history. There are vague memories of Leader, a big two-legs who was generous with scraps and who would sometimes take Wilfred with him to the Big Outside; Pushes-Like-Wind, Leader’s mate and one who snarled whenever Wilfred came near; Chooses-Path, the two-legs who led him to the Big Outside the rest of the time and dispensed the glorious mutton; and Little Sister, a tiny two-legs who was the only one to play with Wilfred. Sometimes, she would climb up his back and made sad noises until he began to run through the Small Outside.

Wilfred remembers the day when the whole pack was sad. They made noises at Leader, and Wilfred whined. Leader nuzzled Pushes-Like-Wind and wrestled with Little Sister. Leader even gave Wilfred a pat. Then he left with another two-legs, one with a strange, shiny hard coat. Wilfred never saw Leader again.

A long time went by. Pushes-Like-Wind pushed harder. For some reason, he could not go to the Dark Inside any more. He was trapped in the Small Outdoors. Chooses-Path still let him go to the Big Outside, but not as often. Little Sister tried to play with him often, but she was very sad, and Pushes-Like-Wind would run to the Small Outside very often and drag Little Sister inside. At first, Wilfred tried to follow, but the big two-legs would always kick him.

One day, the two-legs made much noise. It was mostly Pushes-Like-Wind, actually; Chooses-Path and Little Sister cowered from the new leader. Then, Little Sister ran to the Small Outside, making sad noises. Pushes-Like-Wind followed, and not-play grabbed her. Little Sister began to yelp, so Wilfred latched on to the big two-legs’ long paw.

Pushes-Like Wind kick Wilfred hard, and he ran. She followed, and kicked him again and again. In desperation, he ran through the Dark Inside, and she kept kicking at him. She kicked him out to the Big Outside, and closed the wall behind him. No matter how hard he scratched and whined, he could not get back. After a while, Pushes-Like-Wind would come out and kick at him again until he went away.

After a long time, he was hungry and thirsty. Wilfred wandered off into the Big Outside, hoping to find scraps and water from places he remembered from previous journeys with Chooses-Path. It has been a long time now, much longer than the time he spent waiting to be let back inside the den. But he is out of the pack, now. Life in the Big Outside has been hungry and cold, but he has survived, and while some of the two-legs kick him like Pushes-Like-Wind, others give him a pat or throw him scraps. Yes, life is tough - but one day, he will find a new pack.

Skills:

Language
Tradespeak: extremely limited. Wilfred knows a few commands – ‘sit’, ‘roll over’, ‘stay’, ‘fetch’, etc., but that’s it. There is a highly tonal element to it, as well; commands must be uttered in a commanding sort of tone for him to register them. Otherwise, it’s just noise.

Survival: average. Wilfred knows not to get in the way of horses, knows when the taverns throw out their garbage, where fresh(ish) water can be found, and the location of some warm spots good for sleeping. It’s enough to keep him alive, but he’s still quite new to all this. There have been a couple of close calls already.

Abilities:

Senses:

Smell: dogs have a sense of smell ranging from 1000 all the way up to 100 million times more sensitive than that of a human’s. Wilfred has a sense of smell on the lower end of the spectrum, at 1000 times that of an average human.

Hearing: Wilfred can hear sounds far beyond the upper limit of human hearing, and his ear mobility allows for him to pinpoint the location of a sound. He can also hear noises twice as far away as an average human can.

Vision: Wilfred has the equivalent of human red-green colour blindness, and can detect differences in shades about half as well as that of an average human. However, as all dogs have tapetum lucidum, he benefits from possessing low-light vision. His vision is half as negatively affected by diminished light conditions than that of an average human.

Items:

The dog-eared remains of a red leather collar. The silver tag dangling from it says ‘Wilfred’.

I understand any concerns about his sense of smell, given that level 0 characters generally have a cap of 2x that of an average human for physical traits. I thought I'd go for it anyway, since it is such an integral part of the species, and it's sort of balanced out by the fact that he's a dog.

I think I can make an exception for smell, as it has limited combat usage. It's not the same as some other physical characteristics which, when enhanced, can make a huge difference.

Thus, you are approved. Welcome to Althanas and don't hump too many legs.
