View Full Version : The Puppeteer's Praxes

I really liked Ceidon's idea for the Fetch Quest - lots of participants, short posts, no rigid posting order, and a good amount of leeway on the writer's parts - so I thought I would try and run a quest in a similar manner. So, if you're interested, please have a look at the quest outline below, and if you're still interested after that, submit a post in this thread and let me know :)

The Puppeteer's Praxes

The first signs were so small, none could have hoped to see them. Folk who were renowned for honesty were caught telling blatant lies, or people who hadn't a mean bone in their body would begin to spew poison at friends and family. Then the problem grew, as theft and violence burgeoned on the streets of Serenti. The thing was, the culprits were the same kinds of people - formerly law abiding, peaceful citizens, who had suddenly decided to smash in a storefront window or bloody their knuckles on the face of whoever happened to be closest when they snapped. The incidents grew more and more serious, but perhaps the most remarkable thing about them was the lack of caution amongst the perpetrators. In every case, the crime would happen in broad daylight, surrounded by witnesses.

Three days ago, things became truly dire. A man sits in a cell below the city watch house, pleading innocence to the bloody murder of three citizens of which he has been accused, on the strength of nothing less than the testimony of twenty witnesses and the dripping knife found still clutched in his hand upon the guard's arrival. To the authorities, it is simply another horrific murder; uncommon, perhaps, but not unheard of. Others, however, appear to be sceptical. Notes have sprung up across the city, nailed to posts and trundling in the breeze, promising coin for help. They direct interested parties to a small, dusty-windowed property on Cadling Road, a quiet merchant's street deep within the city.

Some may be interested in the money, others in the chance to do some good - still others, perhaps, are attracted by the mystery, or maybe they keep their motives to themselves. Whatever the reason, intrigue awaits in the coastal sprawl of Serenti.

RULES

Preferably 2-3 paragraphs per post, maybe a couple more if you really need it. The idea is to make this a really easy thread to maintain activity in, and perhaps, also to test people's concision.
No strict posting order. While it would be courteous to refrain from spamming the thread with heaps of consecutive posts, if you feel like you want to write, then go for it!
Stick it to the man! I'm going to try and adapt the story to events as they occur, so don't feel shy about deviating from the 'plot' (whatever that may be). Have fun with this - that's an order!
There is no fee for joining, but donations of beef jerky, mutton, old bones or chew toys are greatly appreciated.

I dare say a mystery like this calls for an investigator with a little more...finesse.

Prophet
07-13-13, 07:51 AM
Heyo. Your favourite two formed demon is ready! If i don't post it's because im running a four person battle and pestering them to reply. For that we need posting order.

Krausus
07-13-13, 08:20 AM
Im in. I have nothing to do but wait to become a mod and wait for judgement on my last battle.

Wilfred
07-13-13, 08:38 AM
Welcome Krausus and Prophet! And, uh, Aur and Hu, I guess.

I had planned to leave off starting the actual thread for a day or two - that way, we can start with a stronger cast, and Prophet should have time to get his profile approved :)

Prophet
07-13-13, 09:28 AM
Oh. I am approved. Just added a dragon as my companion. You're ok that I disappear every night at dusk right?

.Alexander.
07-13-13, 09:31 AM
I'd be down.

Wilfred
07-13-13, 09:47 AM
And a hearty welcome to Alexander!

You're ok that I disappear every night at dusk right?

Yep, of course. Sadly, I can't guarantee that everything will take place during the day. Perhaps you could use your time in the tomb to review the evidence collected during this thread? It's up to you, of course.

Prophet
07-13-13, 06:32 PM
Perfect. You're starting the thread tomorrow or later?

Wilfred
07-14-13, 06:44 AM
I thought I would start it tonight (my time, GMT +8) only if we get a few more volunteers, otherwise I'll wait until tomorrow (just one day doesn't seem like it gives people much of a chance to sign up from the start).

Wilfred
07-15-13, 05:43 AM
And the thread is up! You can find it in the Corone forum (obviously), right here (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?25630-The-Puppeteer-s-Praxes-%28open%29&p=209656#post209656).

EDIT: looking back, I see that one of the 'rules' was quite poorly written. See:

Stick it to the man! I'm going to try and adapt the story to events as they occur, so don't feel shy about deviating from the 'plot' (whatever that may be).

I can see that might be interpreted as 'do what you will'. However, as I already have the story plotted out leading up to the events of the thread, what I meant was more along the lines of 'don't be afraid to side with the bad guys'/'use any investigative method you feel like'/etc. I realise that this is a collaborative effort, though, so please let me know if you'd prefer that we each make the background info up as we go along - and if a majority do, I'd be happy to take a back seat in driving this thing.

Just a heads up, I'm going to continue posting regularly, regardless of other people's activity, just so the thread stays alive. New arrivals are still free to jump in whenever, obviously.

Prophet
07-16-13, 02:43 PM
In fact i will post because luckily i got the plate in today.

I think it's fair to say I've missed the mark on this one.

I will try to find a suitable entry point for a cameo, but continue as if I weren't. Good work so far!

Wilfred
07-16-13, 11:37 PM
Nooo! We need you :(

Krausus

And suddenly two people join.

Aurelianus Drak'shal
07-17-13, 09:54 AM
Alright, this may seem picky, but I'd just like to point out:

No-one IC should actually know the term 'tiefling'. It's fine to use it as a descriptor for Aure, but the word itself it from an entirely different plane of existence.

That's why I switch it out with half-demon, half-breed, etc.

Prophet
07-17-13, 09:59 AM
sorry. editing.

Aurelianus Drak'shal

Much obliged.

Will Oni do?

Aurelianus Drak'shal

lol aye, that'll do nicely.

Prophet
07-17-13, 10:46 AM
and sorry bout the sense bit. I was thinking of things that ui am going to put in at level one. I eidited it out so that it makes me look regular.

Wilfred
07-17-13, 10:55 AM
No worries. It's just that us judges take that sort of thing into account when we do the scores, so you'll actually be doing yourself a favour if you avoid powerplaying :)

Solar Haven
07-17-13, 04:39 PM
Okay so, i am assuming after we do some "clue-seeking" you will tell us what kind of clue we found? and we would have to bring it back to inform the others? or do we just bring back what we think would be a clue?

i would suggest the former, as you know what you have planned, we don't

Otto
07-17-13, 09:38 PM
That was the original idea, yes - I've got everything plotted out, and will try to make the evidence crop up as you undertake the investigation.

Aurelianus Drak'shal
07-18-13, 06:38 AM
But do we have to take it back and inform the others?

(I know it may seem like a dick move not to, but I'm looking at this from my character's viewpoint.)

Otto
07-18-13, 08:47 AM
Of course not! That's the sort of freedom I want you to have in this thread. However, there may be some redundancy, so the others still have enough information to figure things out (even if they end up lagging a step or two behind).

Aurelianus Drak'shal
07-18-13, 09:08 AM
That.. works perfectly. :P

Aurelianus Drak'shal
07-23-13, 11:54 AM
As per your last note, Wilfred, I'll hold off posting until Solar and the others are up to the evening point of their own investigations.

Then I can swing back in for my part, during the night.

Tad_MacLaren

Is it too late to join? I'm new, so I apologize in advance! How frequent are you looking for posts?

Brand

Well. Wilf, ill be joining on this guy too. I need all the exp i can get to expand his abilities section.

Wilfred
07-31-13, 09:25 PM
Not at all, Tad! Feel free to jump in. I'm sure Glofir would still be awake if you wanted to start there, or you can strike out on your own for now.

And of course, you're welcome to bring in another character, Krausus/Brand.

EDIT: sorry, Tad, I forgot to answer your question. While it would be courteous to post in turns, so that nobody gets sidelined, feel free to skip them if they're taking more than two or three days. The idea here is that having just three or four paragraphs per post will make it easy for everyone to stay fairly active.

sorry it has taken me so long to get around to posting, been trying to work on my solo before i posted in the thread.

and i hit a giant wall of blocking .... +5 .... creative block hoorah!

so i decided i will skip on my solo and keep up with you guy's! and do my solo in between

Otto

Don't worry about it! I appreciate that you're making time to post. One of the things I liked about Ceidon's suggestion which I adopted here (short posts), is that it should still be easy enough to contribute, even if you're finding writing a little tricky. That said, don't feel pressured to keep posting too regularly. If you have a different schedule which you enjoy more, we can still work with that.

Also, an announcement: it looks like the other mods are happy for me to provide some bonuses to each participant upon completion of the thread. These may take the form of bonus gold or a confirmed item (perhaps something from Glofir's trove). It's just possible that someone will get their hands on one particularly powerful reward, too...

I had that giant wall of blocking for my solo... I found it much easier to react to a setting than to start with a blank slate. I find myself itching for a new chance to post in praxes while putting off posting in my solo thread. I'm fairly happy with how it's coming, but I'm not sure how on earth I'll ever hit 10k words!
