Eli
07-21-13, 03:19 PM
Age: Currently 28. In total around 15,000-16,000
Race: Human
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Green
Height: 6' 5"
Weight: 245 lb.
Occupation: Butcher, beggar, parlor magician. Whatever puts food in his belly.
Personality: Eli is old. So very old. He has long since lost the ability care about the petty concerns of social niceties and worldly affairs. Often honest to a fault and perpetually cherry he really comes off like the Dali Lama: He'll take you up on anything and find what joy he can. He once blew his nose on a queens dress and made it up to her by turning the ballroom floor into an indoor skating rink.
Appearance: Eli is a gorgeous man in a starving skinny hobo kind of way. His cheekbones could be considered deadly weapons and his smile has been known to make even High Elven ladies sigh. He is of course absolutely shameless about using this to his advantage. Even dressed as he is in linen rags, his knives kept on his person at all times in leather sheathes in a bag which he carries on his back. He keeps himself and all his possessions meticulously clean at all times and smells faintly of sandalwood.
History: Eli has been around for a long time. Long enough to remember the war of songs and what lead to it, long enough to remember a time when Kings long forgotten made music fit to shake the heavens to appease spirits whose names have long since been lost. He was born so long ago in a village called Canton ground into dust before elf or man ever set one stone atop another to build their cities. He was born to the village's butcher if you could call him that, he was really just the man most able to take apart an animal in the tastiest ways and never charged more than a share of the food to ply his skill. It was from him that Eli learned the trade he still and has always practiced. Eli's mother, whom he never talks about ever under any circumstances ever, was a sor- seamstress who raised him and his nine younger sisters admirably and that is all Eli will say of her. Eli grew up and inherited his fathers place as village butcher and entertained his friends' children with the parlor tricks taught to him by his mo- he had picked up. At 17 he married a young woman whose father hated him named Anna who he describes thus: "Never has a more lovely creature walked the world than my Anna on her dying day nor ever shall again." He might be a touch biased but he has remained true to her for all the ages since. It was in the third year of their marriage that Eli began to deepen his study of magic at the behest of his mo- just because he felt like it. Five years later he was a father and accomplished sorcerer contracted more often to work his spells than to ply his trade. It was in this time he began to work on the idea of mortality. This came in handy a few months later when a band of knights working under the orders of the current petty king came to the village to hunt for sorcerers. They found Eli. He was burned at the stake in the center of town and his family mourned his murder.
Needles to say everyone was very surprised when he walked out of the woods 32 days later bruised, scratched and very much not a cinder. It appeared that his experiments had worked but he was unsure of which one and the trauma of his ordeal made it that much harder to think about and seemed to have diminished his capacity for magic. It would take the rest of his natural life to figure out exactly what he had done and how to replicate it but before he could regain the magical strength to do so his wife had died peacefully of old age, their lives together long and blissful and he gave up looking since he had learned one must be a sor- have green eyes to learn the secret of immortality and none of his children did. He died four years after his wife and burst into flame taking their house and all their possessions with him. His family mourned his passing and went on with their lives. Needless to say everyone was very surprised when, on the 28th day after his death, a pillar of fire erupted in the center of town and seemingly 28 year old Eli tumbled from it naked and screaming with his viper familiar "Snakey" wrapped around his left arm. Shortly thereafter Eli decided to leave the village and pursue magic full time "off in some cave."
A century or two later he got his vengeance on the kingdom of the long dead warlord who had murdered him and set up his own kingdom which then went on a brutal campaign of conquest for the next few millennia rising and falling with the fortunes of war. Texts from the latter times of this era describe the sorcerer king who could bend space and time to his will and whose endless march of conquest was as brutal and merciless as any campaign of carnage carried out by the orcs. The Butcher of Canton is in some regions still whispered by children around campfires in their stories of monsters and mayhem. Soon the War of Songs broke out and Eli largely ignored it because it was happening in elvish lands. When it was over the new elvish capital was built and Eli largely ignored is as was the mutual want. Soon however the Elves became annoyed with their raucous neighbor and had him killed many times in quick succession. Get him drunk and ask him about it sometime. This crippled his magical abilities and his kingdom and reign of terror came to an end.
He is lost to the ages for a long time "off in some cave" but a new figure crops up in the aftermath of the Demon War this time as a healer and teacher. Regarded for his refusal to do violence and steadfast determination to bring peace and healing to the land through philosophy and compassion, asking that we treat our fellows as we would be treated. After a thousand years or so Eli grew tiered of getting killed for peace and decided to go back to making war and carved out another kingdom for himself. This cycle of peace and war continued for many thousands of years until about a thousand years ago when Eli was killed many times in rapid succession by a period of legendarily bad luck and a dragon.
Eli has not yet recovered from this second loss of his power and is reluctant to start at the process of strengthening himself again. He still wears a wedding ring and makes offerings for his wife every year and he still likes to entertain children with parlor tricks, so we'll see.
Skills: Eli is a butcher. Eli is a very, very good butcher who has had more time than there has been civilization to practice his craft. He shows up at a town, demonstrates his skill and mercilessly undersells every other butcher in the area and leaves town before they murder him. (You'd be suprised how often that happens.) He has also picked up the art of begging and uses is shamelessly and is not above doing odd jobs and or hard labor. Other than that all he has is his magic. He has never learned how to fight hand to hand because "If I have time for that I have time for more magic." He is technically capable of using a bow but really only in a hunting setting. He is also terrible at that. He can run. He can run for a long time very fast and does so at the first hint of danger. Dieing really hurts and he doesn't like it. He can navigate by stars or map or by the lay of the land. He's walked just about everywhere in the world and and can find his way pretty well by now. And rope. He's good at rope. And flower arrangement. Jack of all trades but especially butchering.
Abilities: Illusion. Eli can create illusions up to roughly person size within sight and keep them there until he stops making them. He does not to see the illusion after he has made it to keep it running. At the moment he can do only one at a time. These illusions can include every common sense.
Conjure: Eli can create up to ten pounds of inorganic material within 20 feet and hold it in existence for as long as he keeps up his concentration and stays within a mile of it. He can make complex objects if he knows how. As a general rule, he does not. He can make as many objects as he can concentrate on. Two. Maybe. That may change as he grows stronger.
Immortality: Eli can die. Of old age or poison or violence or any other thing that can kill a normal human. He has done so many times. It hurts. When Eli dies and, only when he dies (mortal wounding does not count), he and Snakey burst into a fire that completely consumes their remains (at this time any... parts... not attached to them also burn. Within reason. A severed hand burns. Dust from his skin does not. As a rule: do you want it to not burn for some reason? Then it does. You get the idea.) This fire is a magical flame that burns through any magic (And nothing else. It's still fire though. Still hurts.) like cord wood. Kill Eli with a magic sword? Keep it away from the flames! It'll burn the enchantment right off it. Temporarily if some other, non-Eli-mage, did the enchanting. Any kind of magic Eli has done that is not his immortality or Snakey's familiar-ness ceases when he burns and any kind of magic done to him burns with him. He is understandably a little bad at enchantment. On the twenty eighth day after his death at high noon Eli reappears from a pillar of non magical fire naked and screaming and physically as he was at 28 years old at a random survivable location no more than 100 miles from where he died. It really, really, hurts and he avoids death like the plague. He knows it sucks and he knows he has to come back. This ability will never change with growth.
Items: Clothes on his back. Extensive and meticulously maintained set of butchers Knives in leather satchel of his own design.
Familiar: Snakey the Viper. Snakey has been with his master since his master's early childhood and was probably his masters first act of magic. They are bound soul to soul and have been with each other for a long time. Snakey speaks snakese and understands most of what is said in common. He does tricks.
