“Who needs Oh My Goddess! when there’s dragons and princesses around?”
Alias: Seiko.
Gender: Female.
Race: Human.
Height: 4’9”.
Weight: 106lbs.
Eye Colour: Black.
Hair Colour: Black.
Religion: Shinto.
Alignment: Chaotic Good.
Occupation: Student.
Intelligence: Average.
Literacy: Above Average.
History: Seiko Kazumi is your typical student. On her way to Chongming Elementary each morning, she skips enthusiastically, drops baked goods to her relatives in the river shikumen, and arrives on time without fail. She meets Niko, Hyu, and occasionally, Huang on the way, arriving at the school gates surrounded by friends, sunlight, and cheer.
When she leaves, she is less cheery. Bedraggled, tired, and feet aching, she catches the tram into the city, to her mother’s office building, and waits in the reception until five. When they arrive home at six, they commence the evening family ritual. Dinner, discussion, and dancing (and perhaps chores, though Seiko will do everything she can to avoid the latter). By then, she is in bed under the covers. She uses the time in the week to do what she loves most; read.
Though her small room is well decorated, and tidy, in the makeshift cavern of silk, her world is chaotic and in ruins. Seiko Kazumi has a gift, one that passes down through the females of her family for centuries. When she reads, the worlds she mouths come to life. She is not mad. She is not ‘experimenting’. He characters on the page really do spring into the world, run rampant around her room, and educate her about the realities within the pages.
One book in particular has proven problematic. The title is ‘Althanas’. There are sixteen volumes in the series, each on Seiko’s shelf, each dog-eared with love, use, and accidents. They are wedged between manga, economics handbooks, and scrapbooks depicting all the trips we have gone on in the humid summers of northern China. Brought up on the Japanese heritage of her father, Seiko has longed for western fantasy, and the more she reads of elves, goblins, and heroes fighting for freedom, the more she retreats into her silk cocoon, and the more the morning trip to school tires her.
I hope that she can graduate, become a writer, and end up giving life to her silver tongue. When I became obsessed with my gift, I spent most of my teenage years not attending college lectures, not loving life, and ignoring all the opportunities that came my way. It is because of that ignorance and allure that we live in the suburbs. It is because of the Althanas characters I talked to long into the night that her father takes all the overtime he can.
What would you do though? How would you tell people you love that they are going to make the same mistakes you did? I sorely wish there was a way to break the cycle of despair this gift brought to my mother, my mother’s mother, and me. Maybe Seiko, who is still such a sweet wide-eyed girl, can be the one to break it. Maybe she will learn to speak the people to life and do some good in Chongming. Maybe she will even help people all over Shanghai, and beyond, like the people of Althanas.
Skills:
Grade Student: Seiko is a dedicated student, and averages A’s. She can timetable, communicate, and organise at an above average level.
Linguist: Seiko has a natural ability to learn languages quickly. She is currently trilingual, learning to read in kanji, and various Mandarin dialects.
Domestic: Seiko has an average grasp of basic domestic duties, household maintenance, financial management, and a good work ethic.
Abilities:
Silver Tongue: Seiko’s gift allows her to read things from books to life. The images are illusory. Anyone can see them, and anyone can touch them (though when they do, there is a light heat, and then the spell ends). People with high perception can see them for what they are - not real.
Create: Seiko can produce six objects at once. These cannot be larger than Seiko, and up to two posts. They are tangible, but dissipate when touched.
Narrate: Once she creates something, Seiko can read exerts from the source book and attempt to guide the objects to her will. Such attempts are usually chaotic.
Day Dreamer: Seiko is prone to day dreaming, and is always tired. She is always lethargic. She has 0.5 stamina of most girls her age, and is an insomniac.
