Dear Sleep,
It seems like ages since the last time we spoke. How have you been? I hear about you now and again from all our old friends. I hope you are well.
I don't know what happened between us. I mean, I just don't get it; we used to be friends. We used to get on so well and see each other every day. We didn't always agree with each other, and sometimes we'd spend some time apart.. but these days, it's like I never see you any more.
I miss all the good times we had - all the nights we spent just lying about my room, or even just on the couch. I miss how close we were.
I understand we each have busy lives these days, but that doesn't mean I don't have time for you anymore. I'm still the same person I used to be. So let's forget all our differences and just make things the way they once were.

Well, maybe if you stopped hanging out under people's beds all night, Twitch...

Wow. I never knew how insomnia gets to me until going five days sitting on my granddad's bedside. Well. Here goes.
Oh I've just been so busy, caught up in all things, forever embodied in work! I seem to never see you ever again, and hope to work, and find you again. To look at you Sleep and smile with glee, as i undress and lay with ye.
So Sleep, my dear friend, don't think i desert you, it's not been too long, but i see your getting me wrong. So don't cry or weep but smile with me, as i slowly undress and lay with ye.

Well, if my meds ever work, they work too well, and I'm out for eighteen to twenty-odd hours.
But, they rarely work. And, at the moment, I've been "blessed" with two hours a night, give or take.

I stopped them ages ago. If i got lucky with them working, i got MAYBE four hours. But now im just sorta "Four days straight, wait, body doesn't like it, is out could for a day and a half. "

Well I didn't know you could do that, but thanks!
*procrastination town here we come!
I was in the two hours a night on average for a year. Usually didn't sleep for a few days and then catch some just before sunrise. Longest I was ever awake was seven days. The hallucinations weren't the worst part. I'd always assumed they would be.

Insomnia has been my nemesis for many years... there have been times where I'd get only a couple hours of sleep every other night, or be awake and wired for 3-5 days at a time. The secondary symptoms, as it seems many of you are aware, are torture. I had literally seen doctors across the country, multiple sleep specialist MDs, spent the night in a sleep clinic... but in the past 18 months I've gone from 1-2 hours a night on average to 5-7. It's taken a hell of a lot of work, but it's worth it... I'm still chronically fatigued, but waking up in the morning is no longer a painful experience. What's more... I'm WAKING UP... in the MORNING. Meaning I slept at night :)
For anyone looking to try something different in the pursuit of quality sleep, I'd suggest making sure you eat enough protein and veggies, taking a magnesium citrate supplement about 30mins before bed, rigorously studying and implementing sleepy hygiene strategies, and seeing a naturopathic doctor or dietician/nutritionist if possible regarding insomnia. If you're being treated for insomnia by a medical doctor, it may be worth talking to them about diagnosing and treating any underlying physical or mental health problems that could be contributing to your insomnia. There are usually other contributing factors, and MDs (in my considerable experience) are not great at treating insomnia directly.
Oh, one last thing... if you spend a lot of time on the computer at night (like I do), try downloading and installing a blue light reduction program. Ordinarily computer monitors put out enough blue light to promote wakefulness. I use Redshift GUI which works great and is free, but there are plenty of similar programs out there. I also put red filters on my lights if I'm home in the evening/night, which helps me get sleepy. Hope some of this helps some of you!
