Duffy Brandybuck is one of five avatars of a dead Thayne. Five centuries, thirty-eight years, and three months ago, a Forgotten One died. His name was Oblivion. Seeing their brother’s destruction, the other Forgotten Ones wove spells of great power to bring him back to the world. They sealed his soul into five bodies, so that as long as they lived, he lived. As long as he lived, the five souls would thrive.

They were given life in the image of Oblivion’s greatest weapon; his literary creations. He stood at the head of the Tantalum troupe, using their legendary influence of Scara Brae to shape the world whilst he remained hidden, safe, and immortal. He named them Defoe, Delilah, Lao Sheng, Pontius, and Liliana. As they died, lives torn apart by the Forgotten One’s wars, they were reborn in his image. Now, free of his oblivious curse, they are Duffy, Lillith, Arden, Ruby, and Pettigrew.

Over the last three hundred years, Oblivion has vanished from memory. Even though the Enigmatic Immortal, Jensen Ambrose fights the wielders of the Tap, the true whereabouts of the last Forgotten One remains a mystery. He remains hidden, called by many names but non-true. Unbeknownst to the people of the world, the existence of the Forgotten One ensures the Tap shall forever remain in the world. The existence of the troupe ensures that the Forgotten One, outliving his fallen siblings, shall dwell in slumber until he is ready to be a whisper in the wind, a nightmare in the shadows.

I do not think I know who I am any more. I used to be so headstrong, an idealist, you might say. Everything in my life, and everybody, they all had their place. I thrived on being in control of that order; the hierarchy of my life was my one and only redeeming feature. The refrain answered each cry for help I made through the wars, trials, and the tribulations we have endured.

Ever since that world tumbled down, I have known only blackness. I have felt only oblivion.

Certainty is something now foreign to me, and my companies in my misery are bourbon and blame. The troupe, after all, was such a huge part of all of our lives, that without it, it is akin to losing a love one, or in my case, losing a leg.

Our work was our identity, and after we gave that up to help Sei, and Sei gave up so much to give us another chance, I do not know if the passion is still there as strongly as it once was. It will never die, by all means, but it is blunted and dull. I guess I am thankful that I have this sabbatical, by which I mean the opportunity to run away, to recuperate. I will not be seeing the Ixian Knights again, least not in the capacity as a captain amongst their number. I have not seen Ruby in five months, and I feel as ambivalent about seeing her again as I was when we first fell out.

That day will come…

Ironically, in Scara Brae’s thespian district, now a ruin, I have found a new frontier to fight. The Arboretum, an old rival playhouse is now mine to call a home of sorts, though it is more a hovel. For so long we forsook our origins as playwrights, and for so long I have been writing nothing but deaths and tragedies, I hope here to find a spark from the days before Lucian’s Call, when we were ‘happy’.

I guess we had to lose everything we had before we could realise just how happy we were with our lot.

We will never be quite as brilliant as we were. I am now a bard half blind and crippled. Ruby is with child, and married to a marvel of a man. Arden and Lilith have been in Akashima fighting with the Greater Oni for over a year, and I am glad…it means that somewhere out in the world, people still believe in heroes. Maybe, in Scara Brae, they will believe in them once more. I will have to find the words to put on this battered parchment before that happens.

I feel hollow.

I feel sad.

Ruby thinks I am mad.

Maybe I am…

I am not scared of being The Restless Fugitive (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?25459-The-Restless-Fugitive-(Closed)&highlight=restless+fugitive) anymore…

I am an eternal, tireless troubadour of potential.

I am ready to Chronicle (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?25815-Brick-By-Brick-(Closed)) the passing of history in song.

Personality: Duffy has become a stoic, determined, and bitter individual. His presence in a room, though commanding, is often a sign of trouble. He is prone unexplained silences. He is forgiving, though he never forgets. He is utterly loyal to the Tantalum, and quick to remind people of their fealty.

If tested, he will fight. He is stubborn, so much so he will seldom accept help with his injury or with his troubles. He is, despite his embattled nature, prone to drunken enthusiasm, happy endeavours, and quirky, off the cuff witticisms that can cut through tension.

Skills:

Swordsman: Duffy can wield one-handed swords at a godly level, and is a fearsome opponent, despite his injuries. He draws his style from the blade singers of Raiaera, with a hint of dirty street fighting for good measure.

Bard: Duffy constantly strives to recite, recant, and produce classical plays and witty comedies. Throughout his life as a playwright, he has amassed the skills required to perform in the various styles of theatre prevalent throughout Althanas.

Actor: Duffy is an outstanding actor of godly skill. He is familiar with all common plays, classic recitals, and famous speeches. He is able to method act flawlessly, and can easily portray a variety of roles as if the character possessed him.

Dancer: Duffy has unrivalled knowledge of dancing, such as the tango, waltz, and the foxtrot. He is intimate with the Scara Brae variations and their respective histories. Due to his injury, he cannot dance himself, but can adequately instruct others.

Musician: Duffy can sing at an above average level. He can play the flute, common harp, and harpsichord to a legendary level. Duffy knows folk songs, ditties, and jigs suitable for street performances, tavern brawls, and courtly dances.

Historian: He has godly knowledge pertaining to the arts, culture, and flora and fauna of Scara Brae. He has an unrivalled knowledge of the Thayne, especially N’Jal and Tantalus.

Abilities:

Aria Armoury: At any point, Duffy is within arm’s reach of his swords. By reaching into the Aria itself, he can summon any weapon he owns at will. He can do so by a click of the finger, and can summon multiple weapons at once.

Righteous Requiem: Duffy sing a blade to life. It makes the blade strike at X3.5 strength, which can stack (Duffy strikes at X5 when singing, for example). It prevents any blunting or chipping of the blade during the song from non-magical material.

Recanting Orison: Duffy can sing and fight in a stance impervious to bladed weapons. He can maintain this for five posts per thread. He cannot strike in return. He can only utilise this ability with cane or katana.

Persuasion: Duffy can attempt to convince characters four levels higher and lower to do his bidding. He cannot cause others to harm themselves. He remains bound by his morals.

The Union of Ages: Six times per thread, Duffy can use an ability from another profile. This requires all the same conditions as the original. Useable profiles are Ruby Winchester, Leopold Winchester, Arden Janelle, Lillith Kazumi, and Pettigrew Jones.

Cursed and Afflicted: Though immortal, Duffy will forever suffer by ancient magic, born of the Tap itself. His right shin fluctuates from bruised, to shattered, to bleeding. Duffy usually requires a cane to walk comfortable.

• His reflexes and agility modifiers are now only X2.
• Marl and milky eyes, which blur and cause migraines.
• 50% resistance to magic spells and 60% resistance to ‘evil’ magic.

Inventory:

Duffy: This dehlar katana has a black silk bound handle. Its sheath is matching in colour. It is resistant to non-magical weapons. When Duffy is singing, it strikes at an X1.5 multiplier. This stacks with other applicable modifiers.

Ruby: A black lacquered cane with a steel spherical tip. It is suitable for swordplay. Once per thread, Duffy can trigger a six-foot cone of flame from the sphere. The sphere also forms a hidden steel blade’s handle.

Pettigrew: A masterwork platinum bangle, inscribed with Duffy’s favourite line from I Want to Be Your Canary. It teleports the wearer back and forth to Brandybuck Castle. It can mimic Arden Janelle’s Blink ability twice per battle.

Arden: A steel short sword once called Tooth. It possesses a potent enhancement, giving piercing attacks X1.5 strength. The closing line from I Want to Be Your Canary glows along the blade.

Lillith: A steel short sword once called Nail. It possesses a potent enhancement, giving slashing attacks 1.5 strength. The opening line from I Want to Be Your Canary glows along the blade.
