There were many advantages to owning one’s own estate. It brought a sense of entitlement to it, one that Kedx wore with a particular pride. It made him feel particularly special. For most of his life, the vampire had considered himself to be above the law. Now, he was the creator of the law. True now his estate was relatively small, a mere manufacturing base in the middle of Salvar, but that would not be the case for long. Kedx had intentionally chosen an estate so close to the uncivilized border. It left a great amount of room for expansion.

However, the vampire knew if expansion was going to be successful, he was going to need reliable men for it. Thus, he had been putting out word for the past few days that the Grace Manor was seeking able men and women for jobs that would normally be beyond their stature. While Kedx did not reveal his exact intention, he planned to finance other estates. It would be a mere drop in the bucket given his immense wealth, and it would provide him with enough security on his borders that he could concentrate on expanding his empire. The vampire knew that as long as he was on a civilizing mission, King Rathaxea would tolerate his actions. While they increased Kedx’s power, they would also expand the Salvarian army.

Thus, the vampire was guardedly optimistic. He was far enough away from Knife’s Edge that it would take a long time for his words to travel all the way to the capital. As long as he maintained himself as a worthy member of the community and a good ruler, Kedx knew he would have nothing to fear.

It was the later part though that Kedx found the most distasteful. One of the most annoying constraints as a vampire lord was the inability to eat one’s own citizens. None the less, there were many other places that the vampire could go (another advantage to having his estate so close to the borders of civilization). Thus, he had issued a second important command on this day. In addition to seeking out others who sought to facilitate his rule in Salvar, Kedx was also building a fence around his property. The only difference was the fence he was building would encapsulate far more area than his estate was supposed to be. All the land he intended to take belonged to the savages, so it would be little trouble for him.

The most important part of his plan was to collect allies and let them grow strong as well though. If there were others of equivalent power, it would be unlikely that Rathaxea would look at him particularly suspiciously. Thus, Kedx intended to fund the estates of worthy allies, once those people made themselves known to him.

Thus, the vampire sat in church with a mischievous smile on his face. As the Holy Count of Grace Manor, he could tell that he had everyone’s attention. He was curious when the entrepreneurial ones would find the gumption to enquire if all the rumors were true. Normally, none of his citizens would speak to him, but Kedx doubted that many of them would be able to resist lure of owning their own estates. He even imagined a few strangers from off of Grace Manor had arrived in church that day. The offer of a fiefdom was quite appealing.
