"A mage of esteem,
is what I wish to become,
knowledge and wisdom.

Name: Aether Mikaeus

Age: 19

Race: Human

Hair Color: Black

Eye Color: Blue

Height: 5'7"

Weight: 110lbs

Occupation: Freelance mage, scholar, and painter (unemployed)

Personality: Aether is a man driven by curiosity and a desire to learn, like many mages. He is known to lock himself in a room and study ancient spellbooks for days at a time, or to go out into the deep wilderness to meditate. One of his most enigmatic traits, however, is his speech pattern. For some reason, Aether speaks almost exclusively in haiku (a style of poetry with a five-syllable line, a seven-syllable line, and another five syllable line) or the occasional one-liner. A possible explanation is that all of his spell incantations are haiku, but he's never revealed anything else about his verbal tick. On the mental side of things, Aether is calm, stoic, and hard to anger. He distinctly separates his heart and mind, and has trained himself to remain serene under intense stress. His public appearance is a firm, strong professional, but Aether is still capable of feeling emotion and sympathy for others. Should someone ask, Aether would be more than happy to help someone in need, either by uttering some profound wisdom or helping them physically. However, with him also being so young, he can be naive about things outside magic.

History: Aether Mikaeus was born in the trading city of Archen. Life was tough, but not too tough. However, he was far too small and weak to perform manual labor like hunting, mining, or lumberjacking, so he was without use for many years of his life. He would become ill and useless during the winters, since his skinny frame could not remain warm easily like his bulky brethren. He was, however, very smart. He spent a lot of time thinking to himself and writing things down. Eventually, he found his callings in magic. He bought some spellbooks from a shady-looking character and proceeded to learn as much as he could about magic. Aether was eventually able to cast spells of his own.

However, the church's policy about magic eventually caught up with him. Aether was labeled a heretic and a warlock. Black-robed inquisitors arrived at his house in an attempt to arrest Aether. He alluded them, but they still managed to burn his house down and destroy anything magical he might have left there. They were merciful to his family, however, and Aether can be thankful for that. With no other real option, Aether was chased out of Archen and fled south towards Raiaera, where magic was more publicly accepted.

Appearance: Aether is rather small and unassuming compared to the burly giants of his Salvar homeland. He wears a blue mage robe with white streaks running through it. His black hair is unkempt, messy, and often gets in his eyes. While casting magic, Aether's eyes can glow blue, and eldritch markings may appear on his skin depending on the spell's power.

Skills:

Aether has a good grasp on alchemy, and can make a decent doctor if need be.
Can speak, read, and write most of the more widespread languages with varying levels of fluency
He's incredibly intelligent and observant as a whole for someone his age.
He paints as a hobby. He sells his works for a bit of spare money on occasion.

Abilities:

Illusion Magic: "Your eyes deceive you / An illusion fools you all / I prepare to strike." Aether can cast an illusion spell that renders himself or another target invisible. The effect lasts for five seconds, or until the target attacks or is attacked.

Electromancy: "A bolt of lightning / Fearsome in religious texts / The wrath of the gods." Aether can cast bolts of lightning out of his hands. They are fairly cheap to cast, and deal a moderate amount of damage (more so versus metal armor). They are also the fastest school of magic one can learn. Despite that, electromancy is highly erratic and inaccurate. Once fired, one could not predict the path of a lightning bolt beyond the general direction it was fired. It has about a 15% accuracy rating at range beyond point-blank.

Demonology: "My familiars / Demons of the unknown worlds / Heed my beck and call." Aether can summon creatures to assist him during battle. For now, he only has one familiar: Augustus the Exalted.

With magic as his main focus, Aether is quite weak physically. Armor interferes with his ability to cast magic, so he can't equip any. This leaves him extremely vulnerable to all forms of attacks.

Equipment: Aether has with him a simple steel hunting knife. He uses it more as a tool than a weapon, since he is not trained in knifeplay. He also has a silver ring, but it lacks the necessary enchantments and is currently useless.

Familiar(s):

Augustus the Exalted is a haunted suit of iron armor. His role in battle is to tank all the damage while Aether casts spells from a distance. He can exist for three minutes at a time, followed by a five minute cooldown. He fights with his sword and shield (pictured above) and has the strength of your average footsoldier. Striking the joins will be the best option when fighting him. Since he is designed to take a beating, it'll take about three or so critical sword strikes to bring him down.

Great character!

Three things for now:

1) Illusion Magic is considered a combo ability due to the differing effects of the magic (invisibility, decoy). I'll need you to remove one of them (or consider removing another ability) to start with.
2) We typically don't allow fully functioning familiars until higher levels. Since your character is physically weak, I'll let you keep Augustus, but only if you limit him the reverse of your character (a tank, but weak attacks) and create some time or attack limit for him (in terms of how many hits he can take) in battles.
3) Do you have any items? Even a mage can have a staff, ya know?

Let me know what you'd like to do.

I've made a few tweaks as you've recommended. In terms of equipment, I'm not quite sure how that would help me. I might get a staff or something down the line. Aether is entirely self-taught, and there isn't much to offer in terms of arcane education in a place like Salvar. Would you have any other assistance?

There's quite a few magical schools, even in Salvar. There, the Church of the Ethereal Sway attempts to control what it calls "rogue magic." You can read more about it in the Wiki entry, contact a content moderator, or ask our content administrator, Silence Sei.

As for the character. Can you describe Augustus in a bit more detail. What sorts of weapon and armor does he use. Could you also specify how many hits from an average human it would take, sans armor, to defeat him?

Updated again. I'll go have a look at the wiki again.

Sorry I wasn't more clear, I'm also interested in the material of the weapons Augustus uses. Are they iron or something else? Finally, as it stands the summon spell has put your character over the limit. Having him the strength of two men certainly won't work, as attacks from two men can be very strong. If you choose iron armor and swords and have him dispell after three hits, I'll allow him to continue at higher levels. Otherwise, we might want to look into giving your character another magic spell. Please let me know.

I further specified Augustus's armor and weapons to be made of iron. Would it be possible to upgrade him in the future?

Also, should I choose a new ability, what do you think would be good in terms of gameplay? Augustus's main purpose is defence, and with only three hitpoints, he won't last very long. Aether himself will go down with one hit, since he has no armor nor any methods of healing himself. He's not agile enough to dodge attacks, either. Would you please offer more suggestions? This is proving difficult.

You can absolutely update him in the future. I mean, I'm happy to let you keep Augustus, provided he is just a tank to begin with. Typically, we don't even allow familiars in competitive RP (battles) to begin with, but because of your characters' weaknesses I'm all for letting him stick around. Keep in mind that the general rule is that there is one attack (or combo attack) per post on Althanas. So that's technically three posts Augustus could be around for. Given that most battles average around six posts per person, that's a over half the time in the battle.

If you're looking for a new spell, add something defensive. A barrier that can withstand x amount of damage before failing, for example.

Alright, sweet. Is there anything else I need to do?

Nope. Looks good. Thanks for being patient.

Approved!
