View Full Version : Günther Faust

Gunther
10-31-13, 12:33 PM
Name: Günther Faust
Age: 25
Race: Human (Salvar)
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color: Blue
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 205
Occupation: Mercenary Warrior/Assassin, apprentice leatherworker, farmer, hunter

Personality: Günther is a reticent man with sociopathic tendencies who prefers to observe than speak. He enjoys playing games of chance and consuming alcoholic beverages. In fact, when intoxicated, he is more apt to talk about himself than when sober. He is not concerned with what others think and feel about him. If he is paid handsomely for a job, he will see it through to completion.

Günther pays attention to detail and is very patient on the job. He waits until he believes it is the best time to strike if hired as an assassin. He is accustomed to working alone, but also does well in a teamwork environment, as long as he feels his teammates are capable. Any hint of incompetence and Günther may take matters into his own. He has dispatched a former co-worker for perceived incompetence.

He is a confident man and believes his work is important. Obviously he does not boast about his accomplishments, but does value his skills and abilities.

Appearance: Günther is a ruggedly handsome man with long bleached blonde hair, blue eyes and a neatly trimmed beard and mustache. His hair is neatly secured behind his head in a pony tail at the nape of the neck. Occasionally, his hair is braided. His musculature is well defined with broad shoulders. A few scars adorn his body at the left bicep and he is missing the smallest finger of his left hand. One might refer to Günther as a mountain man and they would not be wrong. He was raised in the mountains of northern Salvar within a day's march of Skavia.

In warmer months, Günther wears sun-bleached and salted gray colored Thorsberg trousers, light blue side split Kyrtle (tunic) with a black leather belt at the waist. He wears ankle high Hedeby leather shoes. The rest of the year (most of the time), Günther wears the same trousers, shoes and side split Kyrtle, worn as an under kyrtle with an over tunic made of quilted wool. He also wears a small brown wool skull cap and brown leather vambraces and leather & wool-lined gloves.

Günther has both a mail coat and a leather jerkin made of Reindeer hide and reinforced with steel rivets and studs. He prefers the leather jerkin when stealth is required of him. He has a steel conical helmet riveted together with four steel strips. At the apex of the helm is a plume of animal fur that drapes down one side or the back. It is about eight inches long. A section of mail is attached to the rear of the helm for additional protection to the back of the neck. The helmet has cheek flaps attached with leather under the chin. He wears a small leather belt at the waste that cinches the tunics together. Attached to the belt are a pouch at the rear for light provisions, a small axe holder on the right, a sword's scabbard on the left side and small horizontal scabbard placed across the front of the waist to hold his sax; a small 18" short sword made of steel with a bone handle.

History: Günther grew up in a small mountain village roughly 20 kilometers north by northwest of Skavia. The family planted crops in the warmer months and hunted deer and elk in the winter months. These were the sustenance for survival. The nearby rivers provided a bounty of red salmon and other species which served as a staple for many meals throughout the cold Salvar winters.

Günther's father, Johann, was a seasoned fisherman and hunter. He was well versed in providing food for his family and for his village. These are skills he passed on to his sons. Johann married Lena Marne and the two Fausts had seven children; Carl, Gustavus, Clarice, Jakob, Günther, Mari and Per. It was well known to the younger children that Carl would receive the family inheritance when their parents passed and the others knew not to expect much. They knew they would need to make their own way in the world.

The men of Johann's village provided a militia to the regional lord. Johann and his sons trained as members of this militia. The practiced the martial skills under the supervision of the local Baron, Jarl or Duke who provided feedback to the militiamen.

As a boy, Günther learned to use the bow for hunting and casting nets for fishing. He learned when it was time to sew the ground for planting and tended to the weeds. Then in the harvest, he knew when it was time to pull the vegetables up and how to store them for the winter. He was never very good with the bow, preferring to use the axe or sword.

As a young teen, he was enlisted into the militia with his father and brothers. He learned to use the sword and axe in a different way. He would be much older when he took a man's life. Maybe you've heard tales of the first time a warrior killed a man, how much pain and anguish he felt. The warrior may have been touched in the head and felt intense grief, it pained his very existence. This was not the case with young Günther. He actually felt pleasure in taking life. He understood the moral consequences and was disciplined enough not to do it when it was not necessary or he wasn't generating an income from the activity, but it did provide him with a euphoric sense. He especially enjoyed the hunt; to skillfully sneak up on someone and slit their throat or run them through when they least expected it. He wasn't interested in making it a fair fight. If he could get the job done, quickly and cleanly, then get away without anyone knowing it was him, the better.

At the age of 17, he crafted the leather jerkin under the supervision of an experienced leatherworker in his village. The young Faust decided that he enjoyed the craft of leatherworking. He was not very good at it, but intended to design clothing and armor from leather and steel rivets to sell at market. This would help him acquire money while he searched for suitable employment as a soldier for hire. Coupled with what he already knew about dressing a deer or elk, he had all the necessary skills to craft adequate leather goods.

During the recent civil war between the now decaying monarchy and the darkened church of the Ethereal Sway, the men and boys of Günther's village served on the side of the church. It was a messy affair, killing Günther's younger brother, Per. Gustavus lost an eye and Jakob lost his left arm. Johann and Carl fared well and Günther lost only the small finger of his left hand. He also acquired a scar to his left bicep during the war.

When the war ended, he felt the lust for battle lingering in his soul. The call to hunt and kill men screamed his name. He heard talk of orders or guilds of assassins or soldiers for hire. When the war ended, he kissed his mother and father good bye and set off to find such a collaborative. He started in Skavia and slowly made his way to the other major cities of Salvar until he found the Crimson Hands.

It is here that he makes his mark and hopes to establish himself as an assassin or soldier for hire.

Skills:
~ An excellent hunter, experienced from a lifetime in the forest of Salvar.
~ A skilled fishermen, using a net to drag in a bounty of salmon.
~ Skilled with the use of the sword, feeling confident in his ability. He is by no means considered one of the best, but skilled enough to hold his own.
~ Trained in the use of the bow, but lacks confidence. When hunting with his family, Günther would miss just as often as he would hit a stag.
~ Günther prefers the use of an axe and is experienced in using this tool in battle as much as using it to cut trees and shape lumber.
~ trained in the art of leatherworking, producing average to low quality leather goods and armor. His abilities have room for improvement.
~ As an experienced hunter, Günther knows how to strip a carcass, smoke the meat and prepare the hides for use in leatherworking.
~ Knowledgeable in planting and harvesting crops.
~ As a Salvar, he is well practiced in surviving in arctic conditions.

Abilities:
~ Strength. Due to a hard life of hunting, farming, serving as a militiaman and surviving in the cold northern climes, Günther is very hardy complete with burgeoning sinews. His heart and mind are just as tough as his muscles. Günther can run for a day when moving between locations, but does not for his mule cannot keep up. Or maybe she doesn't want to? He can toss the anvil at the local blacksmithing shop and is able to heft weights at least twice his own over his head. His broadword feels natural in his hand and can be wielded with one hand or two. Günther uses two for control, but can just as easily wield it with one as a lesser man could wield a rapier.
~ Tracking. Günther is experienced at tracking both animals and men. He can judge weight by depth of an impression and time of placement based on weather conditions and moistness of the impression.
~ A fortuitous nature. There have been several close calls in Günther's life where he should have died. Some may say that the young Salvar has a guardian angel watching over him. Even in the games of chance, he enjoys to participate in, he tends to win more often than not.

Welcome!

Could you please describe Gunther's strength a bit more tangibly? A few examples would be "Can lift x weight over his head" or "Can handle his broad sword as though it was a short sword."

Speaking of broad swords, what's Gunther's made of?

Speaking of broad swords, what's Gunther's made of?Did you ever watch the original Conan the Barbarian movie? One thing I walked away from that movie thinking about was how Conan and his friends ran everywhere they went. It sort of reminded me of Basic Combat Training. The only time we didn't run was immediately following a meal. The weapons are steel of course and the strength issue has been modified as follows:

Günther can run for a day when moving between locations, but does not for his mule cannot keep up. Or maybe she doesn't want to? He can toss the anvil at the local blacksmithing shop and is able to heft weights at least twice his own over his head. His broadword feels natural in his hand and can be wielded with one hand or two. Günther uses two for control, but can just as easily wield it with one as a lesser man could wield a rapier.

Could you edit it in that the broad sword and bearded ax are made from steel, please?
