Tobias Stalt
11-02-13, 01:14 AM
Name: Tobias Stalt
Age: 24
Race: Human
Hair Color: Dark brown
Eye Color: Light brown
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 150 lbs.
Occupation: Apprentice Tradesman. While his father had high hopes for him, Tobias was largely a failure when it came to the family business. Still, the training was not lost on him, and he has some understanding of the economy, bartering, and finding things he wants or needs. He has a basic understanding of how to sell things, and intelligent buying. A more skilled con artist could legitimately confound him.
Personality: While Tobias has an easy time interacting with others, in his own mind, he's something of a Pariah. Because of circumstance, he sees the World around him as a hateful place, full of greed and violence. He may not be entirely wrong, but he has a tendency to see the worst in those around him, rather than finding their silver linings. Because of this, he has a paranoid streak. It takes a terribly long time for him to "let someone in," and once he does, even the slightest betrayal of trust can make him immensely distrustful all over again. Despite that, he shows a largely positive attitude on the outside, and is quick to be uplifting and lighthearted. Someone who does not know him could easily mistake him for an optimist.
One of his more endearing traits is that he is very attentive to details. Once someone introduces themselves to him, he rarely (if ever) forgets their face. Extenuating circumstances notwithstanding (someone with altered features or hidden attributes would obviously require some sort of deduction on his part.) Those who get to know him think he's somewhat of a creeper because he remembers even minute details, but "it's all a matter of listening and watching."
While by day, he is a kind and unassuming sort of man, Tobias' day job doesn't quite pay the bills. He's still a nice guy, but he's far more willing to part a woman from her purse under the veil of night. And if he paints the streets a bit red, well, he won't cry over it. Mostly, though, he does his best to go unnoticed. Keeps his hands clean.
Appearance: Unimpressive in height or stature, Tobias is clean cut and often seen smiling softly to himself. He is usually plying his trade in the streets, trying to make enough to pay his landlord for the month's rent. His clothes are dirty, but kept clean enough not to stink. His face seems to light up when he is talking about something he is doing, but generally, he seems relatively calm. He is handsome by most standards, but not enough to stand out. His facial hair is neatly kept, and his hair falls slightly beneath his ears.
History: Born in the Winter, Tobias' parents were A tradesman and a midwife, respectively. In spite of her training caring for newborns, ironically, the Lady Stalt was horrendously bad with her own child, neglecting a great deal of his earlier parenting in favor of indulging her own interests. When she was around, Tobias was often beaten or sent to bed without dinner. In contrast, Tobias' father was a loving, if slightly overbearing man who had a vision for his son's future. Training him in the family business (which would avail both of them nothing, it seemed, by the time their relationship came to an abrupt end), Tobias' father sometimes pushed too hard, and made his son withdraw.
By the time he was five and ten, Tobias had made enough on his own to leave his parents house (saving under the table from sales his father was kept in the dark about), and he ran off to try and make it on his own. Rather unfortunately, he spent all of his meager earnings on a hovel of a place, forcing himself into constant indebtedness to a landlord, who heckles him relentlessly whenever he is home.
His father's training also included a modest amount of training with a concealed blade, enough to get him out of a less than desirable situation. That backfired, however, when he got into a small altercation during a trade deal that went terribly wrong. There was a struggle, and in the end, Tobias accidentally stabbed another merchant, resulting in fatality. While he was able to talk the guard into believing that he had done so in self defense, his reputation back home was ruined forever, and his hands and thoughts were stained with blood.
Skills:
Lore (Economics)
Attentive
Weapon: Small blades
Wordplay
Cunning
Diplomacy
Sleight of Hand
Abilities:
Persuade. More than just a skill, Tobias has a certain knack for wordplay. When he speaks in a certain way, his voice takes on a slightly disarming, almost friendly manner that makes him seem more trustworthy or believable. While not at all foolproof, it has a tendency to work on people of similar or lesser ability than his own. Fails if used too many times in succession on a single target.
Rapid movement. For a short burst, Tobias can move with incredible swiftness- that of a maintained, full sprint. This effects his entire body, for a duration of 1 post, plus one more post per level to a maximum of three. When used for it's full duration, Tobias' body begins to feel the pangs of sluggishness, and he becomes slightly slower to react. It is not meant for prolonged usage. This speed is said to be some sort of magic, though Tobias has no idea where he learned it- if he learned it at all.
Equipment: One plain dirk, of common quality, iron. This is kept in a hidden sheath under his shirt. The sheath is boiled leather, for the sake of weatherproofing. His clothing is hand-stitched, but otherwise unremarkable, evidencing that he comes from modest wealth. He wears a layer of leather padding beneath his shirt of shoddy quality, enough to withstand glancing blows. It would not withstand a straight shot or thrust from a weapon.
