History

Tomas was born in the capital city of Salvar, Knife’s Edge. His father and mother were beggars and could not afford to raise a child. So at birth, he was given to his uncle. Tomas grew up in a monastery where his uncle Apollo, or Apo for short, worked as a scribe translating and copying ancient tomes into scrolls that were kept in a large library.

He learned to read and write in various languages though he had trouble actually speaking them. For a time he worked with his uncle transcribing tomes about all sorts of things; the histories of the known world, maps of the various islands and continets, art and the lives of artists, religious bibles from the colorful races of Althanas, and even some books of magic that were kept in the library.

At the age of nine, Apo brought him before the other monks to decide what role he would lead in his life at the monastery. He had the choice of working in the kitchens, working with his uncle in the library, tending the gardens, taking care of the sickly and/or injured, becoming a teacher, painter or sculptor. All of the choices interested Tomas, but none more than the work of a sculptor. He had watched them from a distance and marvelled in their ability to manipulate the stone or marble into a figure of simple beauty such as woman pouring water into a well.

The next few years Tomas apprenticed under a man in the winter years of his life. But probably one of the most gifted sculptors he had ever seen. Ol’ Man Rimes as he was called started him off with clay. Tomas learned to manipulate the clay with his hands and knives to achieve the resembelance of a face. Crude at first, but as he practiced the more his work came to life. Tomas was excited to learn that he was a natural with clay. The tactile feel of it between his fingers was a sensation that he enjoyed so much that he found himself spending the majority of his day working on his craft. Rimes was quite proud of the young man as Tomas approached his thirteenth birthday. And decided to teach him stone sculpting sooner than he intended.

Tomas by now, a well practiced clay sculptor, came at the challenge thinking he would master it just as he had with clay. His first attempts were disasterious. He had trouble chipping away at the stone as it sapped much of his strength and his vision of his works was never as clear as it was with clay. In his minds eye he could see what he wanted to make, but his hands couldn’t do the work to create it. The best of his work was a crude sculptor of a man that was at least asymetrical but unsightly in comparison to the works of Rimes and his peers. Rimes didn’t know what to say to Tomas. At this point in time, Tomas felt very depressed and found solace in sculpting clay once more. Unable to finish his tenure as a sculptor, he was given back to his uncle to work at the libraries. Little did he know that this was a blessing in disguise.

One fateful day, Tomas was given a book entitled “Mirridian.” It was a mage’s spellbook and within it described the creation and manipulation of Golems. Fascinated, Tomas quickly transcribed the book into two copies. One for the library and the other for himself. The following day he was on the hunt for a rare and precious stone. Mirridian was the name of the first Golem Artisan, and with a Merridian stone, Tomas would be able to do something he never dreamed possible.

It took some convincing, but Tomas was able to get Apo to lend him enough coin to purchase a Mirridian stone from the market. Only to find that the market place had all the sorts of precious gemstones of varying sizes, but none by the name of Mirridian. It was months of asking about before the Mirridian stone turned up in the hands a travelling peddler from the Alerar’s dwarven mines. The price emptied his pockets. But with his hands on Mirridian stone, Tomas raced back home to create his first ever golem.

With the one fist sized stone, Tomas was able to create miniature golems of varying types. His first was a miniature knight that would salute at the call of his name. Later as he had more practice with writing the runes on the small stones he was able to make a pair of dancers. A woman and a man made of clay. It was a very difficult thing to do, but he was able to make them perform a small routine at his command. And so young Tomas became the resident Toy Maker of the monastery.

His goods sold well amongst commoners and nobles alike. But now given something he could be passionate about. Tomas found himself wanting to create more than just children’s toys. Setting him off in a journey to find even more Mirridian stones.

Abilities

Golem’s Heart
Tomas is able to craft a golem’s heart using a Mirridian stone. Upon it he would etch in various runes whose meanings define the golem’s purpose. It also entails what the golem is capable of doing. The Mirridian stone in combination with the runes brings a golem to life. However, during the creation of the golem’s heart many mistakes could be made during the etching of rune’s symbols. It takes a precise hand to carve these letters into the Mirridian stone and any mistakes made may cause a multitude of problems with the golem. In order to make the least mistakes possible, Tomas would spread the work over the course of a month depending on the Mirridian stone’s size. Small takes a few days, medium takes a week, large takes a month.

The complexity of the golem’s heart is also defined by the size of the Mirridian stone. The larger the stone the more complex and capable the golem is and likewise the smaller it is the more simple the golem becomes.

Golem’s Eyes
When making a golem’s heart, Tomas would sculpt a sphere out of the Mirridian stone. Excess material from the golem’s heart would then be melted and cast into eyes. The eyes have to be made from the same Mirridian stone otherwise the golem would be blind. Upon these eyes, Tomas would mark the word for sight in runes which is Sol. The symbol is represented by the markings of a sun. Small eyes are more primitive seeing in shades of grey and unable to distinguish objects farther in the distance. Larger eyes coming from a large Golem’s Heart would be able to see farther and in color as their is more space to put more defining runes upon the eyes aside from just sight alone. Golem sight can be altered using different runes such as heat or blood. Allowing them to see in different ways.

Reanimation (Medium to Large Golem’s Heart)
A golem skill adapted from the book of Mirridian that allows his golems to repair itself if the heart of the golem was left intact. This means limbs lossed would slowly make their way back to their body and put themselves together. The process is slow and would take quite a few minutes to totally repair itself. Longer if many limbs were damaged. Superficial damage also takes a few minutes to mend themselves.

Equipment/Weapons: Mirridian Spellbook, knives, chisel, hammer, rucksack, tent, lantern, oil and tinderbox.

Hi and Welcome to Althanas! I'll be working with you on getting your profile approved so you an begin your story! While we work on it feel free to post in any of our Out Of Character areas or spend some time in the chat room.

First off I just want to make sure I'm understanding the plan with the golems. Will you be able to control them in battle? Does he currently have any in his possession?

Also, will you be earning the Mirridian stones through quests?

Pleasure to meet you Amber Eyes.

Tomas will be able to control the golems through commands. So he would have to yell out attack this person before it would attack.

I have him starting off without a golem. But he has made small ones that have been given away. So he might run into ones he has made on his adventures.

I was hoping I could acquire Mirridian stones through quests or the market place. If that's alright with the moderators.

Alright then, you are APPROVED. Just a note though, as you level up the golems you acquire will need to be listed in your profile as they may limit the number you are allowed to control at each level. You can earn the Mirridian in quests, how much you get (if any) will be up to the judge. I'm not sure how purchasing the material would work but you can PM Aurelianus Drak'shal or Max Dirks to check on that. I'm sure something could be worked out.
