View Full Version : The Lost Son of the Ancients

Hrorin
01-07-14, 08:56 PM
Name: Hrorin Bladefist
Age: 183
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 188 lbs.
Eye color: Brown
Hair color: Brown
Occupation: Dwarven Runesmith

Personality: Stoic and reserved, the son of Glorn Bladefist is slow to anger, but mighty in his rage. With a tendency to speak his mind on topics of import, he has been valued for his insight and strategies on councils of war in the past. When he can, he offers his help to those in need- if the payout is sufficient. Ever the Dwarf, he has an eye for riches that can influence him to a degree. He is, to his credit, more in control of his impulse toward shiny things. Only a little, though.

Appearance: Stout and hearty, Hrorin stands tall for a Dwarf, most often seen with his beard in two braids that stretch downward from his chin. His lengthy hair cascades down to the small of his back, flowing over a swath of messy black robes and elegant plate. The wrinkles on his face tell an age worth of tales that he mostly keeps to himself.

Born in the cold of Winter, Hrorin was destined for the heat of a forge. By the time of his first steps, he had tasted the soot and ashes of his father's toils, and he had fallen in love with all of the ancient stories. Specifically, Hrorin took to the study and scrutiny of runes- a venture his father funded with a vested interest.

In the days of his youth, Hrorin was called into the Halls of the Dwarven Lords, where he became an Apprentice Smith to his Father and Uncle. During the days of war, he crafted many of the axes and swords used by his kinsmen, which in turn slew many of their enemies. Set to complacency in his art, Hrorin strove toward loftier heights.

By his fiftieth birthday, his studies in the more occult subsidies of Runic symbology paid off. To the Lord's own son he bestowed a Rune of Protection, carving it into the man's flesh with a honed dagger and searing it with the kiss of a flame. Uttering words of power, the rune began to glimmer with eldritch light, and the prince claimed he felt a surge of mighty power.

Upon the return of the Prince, Hrorin was called forward to receive an accolade for his work, only to find that the Lord had fallen ill and died on the eve of battle. The Rune had worked it's great magic, and the Prince had survived a mortal wound and carried the scar as if it were but a scratch. Dubbed the Unkillable, the newly ascended Lord bid Hrorin bless all of the Dwarves with runes that would render them an unstoppable army. Hrorin realized far too late the cost of inscribing a Rune directly onto the body; the power that it bestowed was an insidious corruptor, and the Lord had become mad with a thirst to rule.

Upon his refusal, the Lord exiled Hrorin in a fit of rage, stripping his family of their modest wealth and damning them to eternal service. His father, speaking to him for one last time, told Hrorin that he was proud, and begged him to never use his knowledge for evil. Hrorin, son of Glorn, made the promise to his father that day with his head held high.

As a parting gift, his father handed him an axe crafted of stone and iron, which he had named "Lament." In their last moments, his father's tears and his own joining on the head of the axe, he inscribed a Rune of Binding, dealing their kinship and love for all time.

And Hrorin left the mountain, cursed to never return.

Languages: Tradespeak, Dwarven

Skills: Apprentice Blacksmith
Knowledge: Runes (Skilled)
Weapon: Axe (Adept)
Martial Prowess
Tactics

Abilities:

Runecraft: One time per 24 hours, Hrorin can (after meditating on the desired rune and the article to be inscribed for no less than an hour a piece) inscribe a single rune of power, his knowledge of runes being limited to the following:
Rune of Binding: The Item is inscribed with a powerful bond, causing it to be more resilient. (Iron can take twice the beating it normally could.)
Rune of Protection: The Item is inscribed with a warding rune, making it impervious to magic until the rune fades. (Lasts for a single thread.)

*Note that only one rune can exist on a single item at a time, and that this ability can be used once per thread.
**To learn another Rune, Hrorin must either find it through study or as spoils. He will not learn them by leveling up normally.

Dwarven Fortitude: Hrorin suffers less damage from being stuck. (3/4 damage from Physical mediums)

Runeskin: An ability he secretly learned from his studies, by tapping into a Rune etched into his own flesh, Hrorin can turn his flesh to stone for several moments, rendering him invulnerable to anything but a heavy hit. Lasts for one post, can be used 2 times per thread.

Equipment: Iron Gauntlets, black wool robes, boiled leather chest armor. The Dwarven War Axe, "Lament."

Great character concept.

I just need a few minor clarifications/changes from you and we can get you approved.

First, what material is "Lament" made from? Second, invulnerable to anything but heavy hits at level 1 might be too powerful, even in the context of a temporary use spell. Obviously, this can be improved at a higher level, but I'd suggest starting out with an increased resistence to piercing attacks but a lower tolerance of blunt (heavy) attacks. This is a realistic property of stone. Keep in mind that we do have some higher tiered metals on Althanas that can pierce stone as though it were flesh. Third, as written I have Runecraft at a particularly low power level due to the cast time. Most battles on Althanas don't last an hour, thus I assume you will not use liquid time by stating in your opening post to a battle that Hrorin has inscribed the rune prior to the battle, correct? If you do plan to use liquid time to enchant your weapons pre-battle, we need to decrease the effectiveness of the enchantments.

Edit in the changes and make the clarifications at your leisure, sir!
