Caed
01-23-14, 06:17 PM
Name: Caed
Age: 19
Race: Human
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown/Tawny
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 170 lbs
Occupation: Thief, Sellsword
Personality:
Despite all he’s been through, Caed meets the world with a cynic’s sense of joy, a pension for narcissism, an unparalleled stubbornness, and a lighthearted spin on many of Althanas’s atrocities. He is prone to avoiding anything that resembles self-reflection or actualization when in the presence of others, preferring to dally in the superficial intricacies upon which most sentient beings choose to communicate. That is not to say he is not familiar with himself. Caed is well aware of his flaws despite his youth, choosing to ignore them to perpetuate his own sense of happiness and peace.
All these personality traits stem from one defining characteristic: resiliency. If Caed is nothing else he is resilient. At his core little can affect him or shake him, and he has yet to be broken by any being.
Appearance:
Caed maintains wavy ink-black hair laced with curls. It is thick in body with a natural oily sheen. This makes his hair highly malleable, often laying where it is moved. His hair is longer on the top and shorter on the sides and he prefers to wear it slicked back and out of his face. His eyes are a unique brown, at times appearing tawny, their deep brown brought to life by the fires of an underlying orange hue in the dusk and dawn of the day. His face is straight and structured, slightly longer, and accentuated by refined masculine features befitting of a gentleman. A solid jaw, sharp yet prominent eyebrows, high cheekbones, small ears, an equine nose, and an obtuse V for a hairline all work in tandem to promote such a facial appearance.
His body is infused with long sinewy muscles, extremely well-defined and cat-like, adding a lax and limber tone to his otherwise muscled and slender frame. His legs, chest, abs, and broad shoulders are particularly well built, and are the defining features of his sub-facial body.
History:
Caed was given away to an orphanage in Corone at a young age, never having known his parents. He was considered a brilliant boy and a good candidate for early adoption. However, much to the dismay of the orphanage’s mother, Caed was frequently adopted into abusive homes. Eventually it got to the point where Caed was regularly returned to the orphanage by his foster parents upon his, often drastic, retaliations. By the age of ten he had already killed one particularly abusive foster father, although the courts found him innocent with all evidence pointing to an act of self defense. Eventually, Caed felt he had to be the catalyst for his own independence and ran away from the orphanage to make a living on the streets.
There he became a skilled thief, plying his trade in a number of calculated heists. During his time taking on jobs for various employers, Caed developed one skill in particular that set him apart from common thieves: the innate ability and knowhow to get around magical wards and enchantments. This made him a rare commodity in the underworld and insured he would always have a job stealing something. After having defied the odds by managing to steal from a number of notable wizards (and even the warded catacombs of the various temples and churches littering Corone) rumor spread that his success stemmed from the fact that he was such a talented thief he could “steal” the energy of the magic put in place, rendering its effects harmless to him.
With his growing reputation among both the authorities and underworld, Caed left Corone before the rumors got out of hand and he drew too much attention to himself. Deciding to let his much exaggerated legend die out, Caed joined up with a group of pirates from Scara Brae. As a member of their crew, Caed travelled Althanas on the high seas, selling his sword and unique talents to the highest bidder. Eventually, the crew had a falling out and Caed left rather than risk losing his life by taking sides.
Skills:
Acrobatics – A carefully trained and steady body capable of strong balance, footing, footwork, and tumbling are paramount to carrying out many of the duties of a thief. He is particularly practiced on boats and in cityscapes.
Awareness – As a one reliant on information to make a living, Caed has developed the necessary skill of being constantly aware of his surrounding environment. Everything people say and do may be of some vital importance to learning some secret vital to his survival.
Blind Fighting – Trained to wield a blade in the darkness of a ship’s hold, he is familiar with what it takes to fight without one’s sense of vision. In the darkness he will not panic and will readily rely on his other four senses to obtain the necessary information about his surroundings to sustain, attack, and defend himself.
Climbing – Capable of scaling and traversing structures, walls, rooftops, fixtures, ropes, boats, masts, sails, and other types of obstacles with relative ease. While not as practiced on mountains, trees, and other natural terrain, the same basics apply.
Combat Training – The time he spent as a child in the unsavory places of Corone and later among pirates and mercenaries has taught Caed to defend himself by any means necessary. He is quite the skilled unarmed combatant despite never receiving formal training in any particular art or style. This is followed closely by daggers, throwing weapons, and other small to medium bladed weapons up to the size of rapiers, short, and long swords. Furthermore, he is proficient with long ranged weapons such as bows and crossbows, but has never put any particular emphasis on their use. Larger weapons, including almost anything bigger than a bastard sword, are considered inefficient and impractical by him, and therefore are almost never seen in his hands.
Disguise – Creating new voices, personalities, outfits, hair colors, makeup, and facial features with whatever materials are available to allow himself to move about different communities and organizations unnoticed is a large part of what he does when evading authorities or gathering intelligence for his next heist.
Education – Caed received a basic education as a child at the orphanage where he was raised in Corone. As a result, he knows how to read and write and understands the fundamentals of philosophy, mathematics, science, history, and arts.
Escape Artist – Ropes, bindings, prisons, and other restraints share a set of common and limited number of ways in which they can be applied. He is familiar with most of these and how to get around them.
Herbalist – This almost exclusively pertains to a basic knowledge of poisons, their applications, effects, and how to treat them. Although, common plants for spices and healing are also known to him.
Mariner – Caed’s time as a pirate taught him well. He is a formidable seaman who knows how to sail and navigate a ship under a variety of conditions. He is also privy to the more mundane aspects of seafaring such as braiding rope, setting a net or line, and patching a mast or hull.
Sleight of Hand – From picking locks and pockets to making objects “disappear” or “reappear” to and from concealed locations, he is capable and well practiced in the fine tuned motor skills required to perform such tasks.
Songs & Stories – Caed remembers the words to a few songs and stories from his travels. Although most of them are best suited for taverns and brothels, the nature of a number of them might surprise you.
Speechcraft – A knack for persuasion, bluffing, quips, and small talk are a practiced part of what he does daily and a necessary part of any rogue’s life. Just don’t expect anything honorable to come out of his mouth.
Spellcraft & Arcana – Many thieves are weary of magic and have the need to know how to recognize and counter it in their line of work. As a thief who specialized in stealing expensive artifacts from Wizards and members of various Clergy, Caed has learned to recognize and read magic from various schools and art forms. Additionally, he has knowledge of how many spells are spun even though he is not capable of utilizing them himself.
Stealth – Silent movements and hiding to escape notice or gain the element of surprise are second nature to him.
Swimming – He has the ability to stay afloat and hold his breath underwater for a limited amount of time in addition to swimming on the surface of, and submerged in, turbulent waters.
Traps – The creation, recognition, and dismantling of traps are a natural part of any thief’s job. Years spent avoiding and setting them has taught him well.
Abilities:
Spellthief – An innate ability Caed discovered naturally during times when he was exposed to magic. Despite the ability’s given name, its function is more akin to any magic wielder’s practice of dispelling magic or counterspelling. He is able to “steal” the essence of any magic at its source via contact with the spell or its wielder(s). At his current level, he can only affect basic magical effects, spells, and abilities and can only do so 3 times per day (or 1 time per day for intermediate) before experiencing the effects of magic overload.
Dexterity – 2x the average Althanian. Quick, coordinated, and uncanny are all words that could be used to describe his natural reflexes and grace. Things like acrobatics, sleight of hand, and other complex and coordinated motions of speed and agility come far easier to him than most.
Strength – 2x the average Althanian. Being able to draw more power from the muscles in his body, things like running, climbing, swimming, jumping, and lifting are all made easier by his natural strength. Furthermore, he hits harder and controls people of lesser strength with more ease.
