View Full Version : The Last Priest: Humbar

Humbar
02-18-14, 09:32 PM
Name: Humbar
Age: Somewhere between 50 and 60; he's legitimately forgotten.
Race: Human
Hair color: Indistinguishably dark with gray.
Eye color: Dark blue
Height: 6'
Weight: 250lbs
Occupation: High Priest of The Bright One
Personality: Kindly and humble. Occasionally snarky, but is mostly peaceful and quiet. Humbar makes a point to be kind and amiable to any and everyone he meets.

Appearance: An unremarkable body with a fair share of paunch, yet undeniable power in his build. He keeps his hair shaved close to the scalp, though his graying beard might be allowed to grow out somewhat.

Humbar wears simple hooded robes of colorless rough linen, belted with hemp rope, and leather sandals made of scraps, or crude footwraps. In cold weather, he wears a thick gray woolen cloak with a deep hood. To carry his provisions, he uses a burlap satchel. He is rarely seen without his long wooden staff in hand, and his knife on his belt. He generally carries his sword wrapped in woolen cloth and slung across his back, along with his bow and arrows. If he has need to do so, his sword has a leather swordbelt which he will fasten about his waist, to carry the blade at his hip.

Medicine (Adept)
Religious Rites: The Bright One (Mastered)
Swordplay (Adept)

Abilities:

- God's Weapon: When pitted against a foe which his god deems suitable, Humbar may make a quick supplication for his god's favor. If successful, his sword will become momentarily empowered by divine favor, usually taking the shape of white fire or light - this is not, however, harmful to the enemy, though they would notice a distinct heat from the blade. Humbar's sword becomes unbreakable by anything weaker than dehlar while the favor lasts, and its blows land with astonishing potency (2x force magnification). This favor does not last forever. If applied to Humbar's sword, it will not last for more than five strokes, or until the blade is blooded, except in moments of true communion with the god. The supplication follows this fashion: "O Bright One, may your glory descend to smite the enemy!"
(OOC Note: Though Humbar can make supplication as often as he likes, the likelihood of The Bright One's aid being added at every request is highly unlikely. The only enemies who truly need fear that Humbar will use this ability are declared enemies of The Bright One, the undead, and similarly opposed or unclean persons. In any event, this ability is not likely to be used more than once per duel thread, and three or four times per proper story thread.)

- Divine Mercy: Humbar may make supplication to The Bright One, keeping one hand on his holy symbol, and if The Bright One is willing, Humbar will heal one person. This healing may come either through a laid-on hand, or through consumption of wine or water from Humbar's bowl. The healing is likely to only effect one affliction: if a person suffering a disease is also gravely wounded, Humbar would either be able to purge the disease or repair the wound, but both is unlikely. This healing does not reverse death, but if a spark of life remains, it will be preserved. The supplication is as follows: "Bright One, let the light of your power descend to this unfortunate and make them whole."

- Divine Sight (Passive): In uncontrollable flashes of divine favor, Humbar may be given insight about an individual. This insight comes as an ability to perceive truths about the individual: stains and scars on the soul, magical auras, heavy consciences, the nature of their intentions, or whether or not the individual is telling or hiding an important truth.

Equipment:

- An ancient consecrated steel sword (Due to wear & tear, this weapon is roughly as strong as an equivalent iron sword).
- A small iron knife, more tool than weapon.
- An oak shortbow & eleven arrows tipped with iron broadheads
- A small bronze disc engraved with the holy symbol (http://www.fotw.net/images/i/ie_1798.gif) of The Bright One, hung about Humbar's neck on a hemp cord.
- A burlap satchel for provisions.
- A bedroll
- A tulip-wood walking staff.
- A small wooden box wrapped in clean linen, containing various salves and herbs.
- A waterskin, marked with the holy symbol of The Bright One
- A small bronze bowl, marked with the holy symbol of The Bright One
- A flint, steel, & tinderbox
- A large book, wrapped in thick cloth to protect it.

Familiar(s): None

History:
Humbar has been a priest of The Bright One from his youth. His superiors told him that he was given to the temple as a child, a sort of sacrifice from a family in the village. According to their stories, they had once been a prominent religion in the lands to the south, in Salvar, but long ago they were driven north by the Church of the Ethereal Sway. As the Church's power increased, they were driven farther and farther north, until, roughly one hundred years ago, the priests of The Bright One finally crossed into the mountains and settled with a village there, building a very simple temple and preaching their holy words to any who would listen. The villagers have paid them almost no heed in that whole span, treating the priests with the respect due to holy men, but continuing to practice their simple spirit-worships and superstitions.

Humbar has learned all of the preserved knowledge relating to the worship of The Bright One in his uneventful years at the temple. Sadly, this knowledge is greatly diminished. In each successive stage of the flight from Salvar, truths and secrets were lost; records were abandoned or destroyed, archivists were murdered. This loss is to the extent that the current priests and acolytes of The Bright One do not know the site of the original temple, nor even their god's true Name, only this single title: The Bright One.

Humbar has lived his entire life in the service of The Bright One. In his youth, he was a simple acolyte, charged with simple tasks of housekeeping and maintenance, and a few rudimentary clerical duties. As he grew older and came into his strength, he was chosen to be the Warder of the temple, and was trained in the use of the sword. There were only a handful of times when he was called to use it, however: roving bandits or Orcs and the like.

Time wore on. Humbar became one of the most senior priests at the temple, until he finally was chosen to be the High Priest. As the second-most priest at the temple, it was his due and duty, and the remaining priests confirmed him in this role. Rather, Itorak, the former High Priest, confirmed him in his role, sadly smiling as he spoke the ritual words over his friend. By this time, only the two priests and a young novitiate still occupied the temple, performing the priestly rites as best they could.

That winter, Itorak fell ill and passed on, leaving Humbar and Denn, the novitiate, to carry on the tradition. Winter passed in all its harshness, and gave way to the sharp life of spring.

Now, the last holy man of The Bright One prepares for the spring rituals with his novitiate, and patiently awaits the death of his religion.

Howdy,

First thing, unfortunately we only have iron (and oak) strength items in a starting character in regards to your sword.

At the moment some of your abilities are a bit strong for a starting character.

God's Weapon:
First part, can you clarify how often he can use this? If it is just once and then you get the single shot or blows then it can be a bit stronger. Often abilities will have three uses, but that offsets their strength somewhat.

The second part is the damage that this does. You will need to limit this to either becoming stronger (and this will involve the metal tier system) or doing extra damage, such as a shock wave or holy fire.

Divine Sight (Passive):
How specific is this? Could he completely read someone's intentions, or is more an inkling mixed with his own 'hunch'?

1. Insofar as the weapon goes, it's a hereditary weapon that goes with the priesthood. Because he's the last fully initiated priest of the Bright One, he's also carrying the role of the Warder. The sword has been passed down with the role for generations of Warder-Priests, some of whom actually had some Warding to do, so it's not going to be in great shape. I can edit to reflect that if you want, but if it's really not acceptable, I can roll with that.

2.a God's Weapon. Theoretically, he could make supplication against every enemy he faces: the power is not coming through Humbar but from The Bright One, so he can speak the words and make the prayer as often as he wants. However, the likelihood of the supplication being granted every time Humbar faces an enemy is not high. He's not going to be able to go flaming-sword-wrath-of-a-god on every trivial pickpocket and bandit he meets; this sort of thing is mostly likely to only be unveiled against religious enemies or 'sinners' or undead, that sort of thing. I can edit to reflect that, and/or add an OOC footnote about how often this is actually going to work.

2.b Apparently I uploaded an earlier draft of this profile; I have since made edits on this issue, in such fashion that I quantified the increased power and clarified on the holy fire/light. I'll summarize now here, and then go edit that: his power is magnified 2x, the holy fire/light is mostly cosmetic (enemies feel a notable heat from the blade, but nothing harmful), and the blade is unbreakable by anything weaker than dehlar.

3. It's not mind-reading, not at this level. It's more of: "Humbar looked at Mr. Stabalicious McBadDude, eyes narrowing. All around him was a flickering, flighting sense of malice." He might be able to discern a bad intention, but he wouldn't be able to know the details of the intention - simply that it was malicious. That sort of thing. So, yes, it's more like an insight mixed with a hunch. It comes and goes, he cannot summon it or control what he sees - if you were to ask Humbar to explain it, he would say that The Bright One illuminates the things he wants Humbar to see. Humbar could certainly pray for insight, but that's no guarantee that it would be granted. Savvy?

Unfortunately the sword will need to be iron. We often have people in the same situation. You can pull it out of your equipment list and write a small entry with something like: current strength: iron. Then you can upgrade it at the bazaar later.

If you could add the ooc note about God's wrath that would be great.
