View Full Version : Tubal T. Cimentarius

Tubal
03-20-14, 09:12 AM
Name: Tubal T. Cimentarius
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Weight: Around 190 pounds
Height: 6'1"
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown

Personality: Honest, quiet and at times trusting to a fault. Tubal was raised to help others and toil in the service of a greater good in the form of civic duty and labor. Despite this, he often battles with his baser instincts, often questioning himself. Idealistic and kind, his naivety may bring him to the threshold of what he views as right and wrong.

History: Born and raised in the deserts of Fallien, Tubal spent his life as most men did in the Cimentarius family, as a mason. Travelling throughout Fallien as a boy, he grew up in the shadow of great civic works that his family was employed the design and build, steeped in a tradition of masonry that nearly deified the hard work and secrecy inherent in the trade. At the age of fourteen he was admitted as an Entered Apprentice, performing the most menial labors required of a mason in his first years, freeing the rock in quarries required for those that had the skill to shape it. Three years later, he was given the title of Fellowcraft, where he learned the principles of his working tools, and for the first time, being allowed to see the first secrets of his trade, which he swore an oath to protect. It took him another eight years to reach the title of Master Mason, giving him the rights and privileges therein.

Though his studies and practical applications of his craft allowed him to lead a productive life, responsible for men and their creation of several large stoneworks, his knowledge did not extend to the politics and power struggles within his family. Tubal had two older brothers, both trying desperately to gain the adoration of an ailing father - in order to gain the head of the Cimentarius' fortune on his passing. When the day came, the two elder brothers cleaved the remains of the estate in half, bickering to the point of bloodshed. With Tubal caught in the middle, he sold the majority of his meager holdings, keeping only his working tools and a mule. Tubal was certain that his name would be a curse in Fallien within a few short years, and he would have none of it.

Appearance: Tall, but not too tall. Strong, but not the strongest. Tubal wears simple clothing mostly, sticking to tunics and pants that befit a man that is used to hard work, usually with a red sash wrapped around him to keep the loose, light fabric from drooping too much. One could consider him handsome if they look hard enough, but his demeanor is neither brash or cunning enough to be purely attractive at first glance. Despite his outward shyness, he walks with a confident gate. His habitual tobacco use is evident, his bottom lip usually sporting a lump of the chew.

Skills:

Attention to detail: From the years of shaping stone and erecting buildings, both civic and defensive - Tubal has trained his eyes to see faults in construction. This aptitude can be a help or a hindrance, as he can strengthen or destroy a defensive structure without too much thought. It is his nature to look for faults in the creations of others, as well as his own.

Swordsman (Basic): At one point during his years as a Fellowcraft, Tubal was assigned to protect work sites from thievery and subterfuge, wherein he was taught the fundamentals of the sword. Tubal has done his best to practice them since, though he would not stand too much of a chance against an experienced adversary.

Flexible learning: Tubal is well equipped mentally to learn new skills quickly. Able to pick up new concepts and idea relatively quickly, he has a thirst for knowledge.

Abilities:

Gerrymander Stone: One of the ancient secrets of Fallien masonry allows Tubal to manipulate rocks, boulders and ashlar. Although this comes at a cost, as this form of magic requires the individual's utmost attention and concentration. Even though Tubal can lift boulders too heavy to be held by hand, his muscles strain and veins throb as if he was physically carrying the stone. Therefore, depending on the size of the rock, it tires him quickly, both mentally and physically, able to lift and move boulders up to twice his body weight. Four times per thread, or until he has the opportunity to rest. NOTE: This is not a combat related skill. It is used only for non-combat related duties.

Resiliance: For the many years Tubal has labored in the quarries, he has learned to channel the pain of rigorous challenges. Allowing him to push his body to the brink, even to the point of collapse. This extreme endurance, though brief, can be enough to overwhelm a foe, or to make a narrow escape. X2 Strength for two posts.

Stone toss: If in the heat of battle, Tubal can combine his two abilities into one. This mixture of fear, rage and adrenaline pushes his mind and body to its peak. He can not only lift stones up to twice his weight, but also throw them towards an enemy at an impressive speed. Two times per thread, or until Tubal can rest. NOTE: This ability is not stackable with the other two. If he uses gerrymander stone, or resiliance in the thread, it will deduct from his ability to use stone toss. As an example, if Tubal uses resiliance one time prior, he can only use stone toss once.

Equipment:
Tyler's Sword: Simple iron sword, in the scimitar style.

Working Tools: Assorted tools such as a square, compass and gavel.

Mule: A female mule, named Ruth. Brown with a silky black mane. Ruth has an intelligent, but stubborn personality, sometimes to the chagrin of Tubal. It could be said that she is not owned by him because of her spirited demeanor. She is not afraid to run away from a fight, and has a bad habit of chewing tobacco.

Cart: A small wooden cart pulled by Ruth, which carries Tubal's belongings.

Tubal's signit ring: A simple gold band with Tubal's maker's mark impressed upon its oval face. He uses it for such mundane tasks as sealing correspondences, as well as for be allowed access into territory otherwise unpassible due to warfare or political strife.

Tubal and I discussed his abilities and skills in chat. Here is the log:

(21:07:04) Althanas: Erikar enters the channel.
(21:07:08) Althanas: Tubal leaves the channel.
(21:07:12) Althanas: Tubal enters the channel.
(21:07:18) Tubal: There we go.
(21:08:10) Erikar: Alright Tubal, glad you found it. Now, it seems to me like your abilities would classify more as skills. Skills are defined as knowledge of something, such as swordsmanship or woodcraft.
(21:10:16) Tubal: I was wondering about that. I thought that since one of the abilities could call on npcs to perform the labor, that it'd be considered a ability. Should I switch it over?
(21:12:29) Erikar: Their is absolutely no ability requirement to call on NPC's to help you perform a task. You could write out in a thread that your employer had given you a Writ to conscript workers to help you build an establishment, and that would negate the need to have an ability. My character right now could do something similar if I wrote out the reasoning well enough, despite him being an assassin. See my reasoning?
(21:12:40) Erikar: Likewise with the Passage ability.
(21:13:57) Tubal: Oooh, I see now. I could incorporate the npcs into the role play, intrinsic to the project. Same for the passage. I get it now.
(21:15:57) Tubal: That's the problem with this character. He's not geared completely towards combat, so I was having trouble finding abilities comparable to the awesomeness in other applications I've seen.
(21:17:37) Erikar: Awesome. Now, as for your ability to damage the structural integrity of constructs, it seems as though you've written it to where your character(as a mason) has intimate knowledge of building and whatnot. This means that your character has the knowledge of construction to the point where he knows how to make one collapse or fail. I would consider this in the same category as knowing how to swing a sword effectively. One could attempt to remove stones(or swing a sword wildly) without knowledge of the structure, but he knows how to do it WELL. It's not as though he's magically collapsing the structure. And if you're not geared towards combat, that's fine! Abilities are basically things that can DIRECTLY affect your opponent in a combat situation. If you could magically remove stones and then throw them at your opponent, it would be an ability. But simply removing a stone and making a structure collapse is something anyone could do.

I had to leave after I said this last bit, but it seems as though you have edited your abilities and skills to your liking.

On to clarification. Does Tubal have to be able to physically lift any rock that he tries to manipulate from afar? Does the strength boost increase his ability to manipulate rocks? Can he send them at someone with increased velocity, or does he simply have the power to lift them and then drop them?

Clear up these points and we can go from there.

Yea, our conversation had me thinking about the abilities. As far as that goes, he can lift up to his body weight, but any more than that would be too much. If it's a small stone, say 50% of his body weight, he could send flying at a fairly quick velocity.

Could we combine the two abilities for a third ability? Or would that be too much?

That is perfectly fine! If he can only lift a stone that is equal to his bodyweight normally, and he has to strain physically to do so, I'd consider it as though he was physically lifting the stone from a distance. If increasing his strength increases his ability to lift heavier stones from afar, that would make perfect sense.

If you would like to combine them into a totally new ability, you COULD, but you could also just edit the stone manipulation ability to say that his strength directly increases his ability to lift heavier stones from afar, and that would take care of that!

Let me know when you decide what you want to do.

I've done a little fine tuning, but I couldn't figure out what to do for a third ability. I'm fine with just two for the first level, I don't suspect that he'll be getting into any major combat situations. Let me know what you think!

Alright, I'm going to have to ask you to tone down the strength boost by at least one post for now. Also, please specify somewhere whether or not the abilities can overlap, as this may affect your approval.

Let me know when you've edited this, and I will let you know what I think.

Wilco, Erikar! I'll fine tune it some more today, when I get back from the gym! I may figure a way to roll them up into a combination ability, I think doing that will ease some of the potential issues that could come down the pipe later on.

Okay, I combined the two into one solely combat related ability. I also changed the strength ability to twice per thread as directed. If you have any other suggestions or requirements, please let me know. Thanks again!
