Quentin Boone
03-31-14, 11:50 PM
A chat RP done between Fox and I. Posted here as was over two sessions, and chat stuff should still be recorded for posterity.

(23:57:48) Quentin_Boone: The Silver Pub was a much nicer tavern than Quentin had been accustomed to of late. There was carpet on the floor and the tables were polished; the people were friendly and there was a buzz of conversation occasionally reaching a crescendo as a group of friends celebrated their own or a friend's inebriation. It made The Empty Hand seem a dive in comparison.

Quentin was sat at the bar on a cushioned stool with a tankard of frothy mead in his hand. He took a deep swallow and chuckled to himself, "Much be'er than the flat coloured water tha' fat bastard serves me!"

The barkeep quirked an eyebrow in the brawlers direction but said nothing. Quentin shook his head, "Don't worry lass, I wa'nt talkin' bout ya. Ya're 'ardly fat now, are ya?"

The woman behind the counter was a young thing, just into adulthood, with a slim frame that held just the right hint of curves to be interesting. Dimples appeared on her cheeks as she smiled at Quentin, "Thank you, sir. Would you like a refill?"

(00:02:08) Fox_Owen_Xavier: The Silver Pub was a welcoming sight to Fox as he dragged his tired feet to the door. Today everything seemed to have gone wrong for some reason. First was the rainstorm, after that, he had messed up a potion causing a small fire and burning his hand, and all the herbs seemed to have already been picked over by some other person. "Well, things can only get better," thought Fox as he tried to stay positive. Entering the pub, Fox found a chair near the bar and waved for the barkeeper.

"Hello good Sir. Could I have a hot bowl of soup to heat my tired bones and a cup of hot water to go along?" Fox asked as he took out a few coins.

(00:09:33) Quentin_Boone: Quentin waved a hand to dismiss the offer of another drink; he still had half a tankard left and didn't want to get too drunk. He was due to fight in the Citadel shortly and would need his wits about him. The brawler had come into the Pub as an alternative to The Hand: The innkeeper sickened him and Boone was getting ever more irritated by the fat fucker's wandering eyes towards Faaria, however expected it was, as it reminded him of the things she did to help support the tall, muscular man and their friends. Not only that but Quentin had grown tired of the lectures about not needing to fight in the Citadel, that Callan could earn enough money for the rent. Boone refused to give nothing to the group and so left early for the fight.

He noticed the newcomer and inclined his head in a cursory greeting.

(00:15:56) Fox_Owen_Xavier: Slipping the coins to the barkeeper, Fox decided to take a better look at his surroundings while waiting for his order. The tavern was nicely furnished with tables and chairs that were worn but still in a solid piece. The crowd seemed to also be a nice bunch as the tones were light and cheerful. Not to mention, there did appear to have been any recent fights. As he continued to look around, Fox noticed the large man nearby giving a friendly wave.

(00:21:06) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "Hmm, tough looking fellow with all those scars and muscles. I bet he is a guard, mercenary, or some type of fighter. Maybe retired or some type of trainer though since he seems to be heading towards middle age and that eye doesn't look in the best of shape," Fox mentally analysed the man as he nodded slightly in acknowledgement.

(00:29:02) Quentin_Boone: Quentin returned to his drink after the man returned a just as cursory greeting, and started to lose himself in thoughts about how he could improve the situation of his group of friends. They had become a family, really; relying on each other and giving support whenever it was needed. Perhaps it'd be best to move out of Radasanth, but then where would their money come from? Most of the gold the group used to survive came from Quentin and Callan fighting in the Citadel. It was a dilemma, but right now there was little Quentin could do about it.

He took another swig of the mead and waved at the young woman behind the bar to get her attention. "D'ya 'ave a pipe and some bacca I could smoke?"

Green eyes smiled at Quentin as the barkeep handed him a pipe and waxed leather pouch. The brawler handed some money over then started packing the pipe with tobacco. He didn't smoke often, but did occasionally enjoy a good draw on a pipe. As he tried to focus on the delicate process, his left eye suddenly started to throb again - he'd taken a hard punch there in his last fight and ever since it had been hurting. He winced and gave it a rub, hoping that might ease the pain.

(00:37:00) Fox_Owen_Xavier: Fox couldn't help but notice the man's eye seemed to be hurting. Without a closer look, the kitsune couldn't be certain but the man seemed to have difficulty seeing out of that eye if not being completely blind. "Well, that soup might take awhile since they apparently need to make a new batch. Just my lucky day I guess," Fox observed. "Since I got nothing better to do, maybe I'll check the man out and see if I can help him. Who knows, maybe it's not as bad as it looks and one of these simple healing potions will do the trick."

"Hello good sir," Fox got up and approached the stranger. "I see your eye seems to be giving you a bit of trouble. I'm a potion crafter by trade and also have some experience with medicines. Maybe I have something that might serve you."

(03:04:11) Quentin_Boone: As the other man walked towards him, Quentin's hand drifted down to rest on the hilt of his silver dagger. He could never be sure when a member of The Family might have finally caught up to him, it was said they never forgot and the bearded brawler had seen that evidenced on more than one occasion in the five years he'd been in Radasanth. Caution was a virtue when you had killed on of The Family's sons.

His hand moved back to pick up the tankard when the stranger spoke, however. He took a sip of the mead and placed the tankard back on the bar before responding. "Ther'aint much ya can do 'bout me eye, lad. Been near blind in it for more than five years. Some li'l shit gave me a sucker punch 'other day, right in the eye, and it's been 'urtin' ever since. Probably just a bruised bone. Thanks for 'offer, though."

Quentin turned the pipe so it pointed towards the other; an offer to share the tobacco.

(03:21:31) Fox_Owen_Xavier: Fox could see the man tense up and get on alert as he approached. "I might be right about that mercenary occupation after all. Those types of people tend to always be on alert or else they end up dead," he thought as he put his hands up to show that he was unarmed and hopefully calm the stranger down slightly. The kitsune let out a quiet sigh of relief as the man seem to relax a bit and share a bit of his story.

"Thank you for the offer. But I'll have to decline the tobacco. My sense of taste and smell is very important to my occupation. Also, my mentor would kill me at least five times over if she found out," Fox explained. "As for your wound, I'm sorry to hear that someone played a nasty trick on you. I had my fair share of dirty tricked played on me so I know what it's like being on the receiving end. Oh, I also have some herbs that might help provide relief from the pain. It's not a permanent solution but should be helpful if the pain flares up."

(03:26:43) Quentin_Boone: Quentin shrugged as the man declined the offer of a smoke and took a long draw himself. He held in the smoke a few seconds before letting it out slowly as he spoke. "Tha' might be 'elpful, bud. I'm due at 'Citadel soon for a fight. I'll tell ya now, though, I aint gorra lorra money so don't be chargin' me a fortune, hear?"

The bearded brawler wasn't a complete arse, and as he spoke, he waved his hand in front of his face to dissipate the smoke before it blew full-force into the other's face. He occasionally, between words, even twisted his mouth so the smoke would be inhaled upwards and away from the seemingly kind stranger. Quentin wondered how much this hawker would charge for his wares.

(03:45:06) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "Seems like a kind enough person. At least he didn't blow smoke into my face like some others do. Hmm, what should I charge... Well, the herbs are fairly common so he probably can easily find someone else who will give him the right price if I try to rip him off. If I give him a cheap price, maybe he knows some people at the citadel who maybe could use my services. Those monks are good healers but there is only so many of them and not everyone seems to have the same priority."

"Well, the herb that I would recommend is a fairly common one that you can find at most decent herbalist shops. You can even find it yourself out in the wild fairly easily, although that's a bit dangerous since there's a few not so nice plants that look similar," Fox decided to tell the truth. Reaching into a small pouch, he pulled out a dried leaf. "Here's what it looks like. For it to work, just grind it up and put it in warm water. Afterwards, use a cloth to apply it to the area. I believe that the locals here call it 'waterweed' due to the way it grows and is applied. As for the price, I'll sell you some for just a few coppers each. Feel free to check other stores but I bet that you won't find any place cheaper."

(03:54:09) Quentin_Boone: "An' 'ow effective is this... Waterweed?" Quentin was never one to care much about plants or healing goods as there were generally other people who could take care of such things. He looked at the leaf suspiciously, still unsure whether the man was an agent of The Family - poisoning the bearded brawler would be a clean way of finally collecting his debt.

He took another draw on the pipe and left it between his teeth, considering whether to trust the man or not.

(04:06:49) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "It's fairly effective although it can take up to twenty minutes to reach full effect which means most people prefer a potion for instant relief. It's best for lingering wounds like yours. I doubt it will take away all of the pain but should reduce it to something where you might forget that you had a wound," Fox replied. "If you would like to see, I'm willing to give you a leaf to try. There isn't really any harmful side affects unless you are allergic to plants. Just be sure not to eat it since that sometimes gives headaches."

(04:13:04) Quentin_Boone: Quentin chewed on the pipe, moving it from side to side as he thought about the offer. He knew most poisons had to be swallowed and the man was advising against that, so maybe there was truth in his words. "All right, I'll try a leaf."

He waved a hand to get the attention of the barkeep and asked for a glass of warm water and a cloth. While the barkeep prepared the order, Quentin took out a few coppers and placed them on the bar. "This should cover i', right?

"Show me how t'make this thing."

(04:26:25) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "Yes, that should be enough for two leafs actually," Fox answered as he took the glass of clean water and poured it into an empty wooden bowl. "It's not that hard to make. I said grind earlier but really, you just need to crush it into small pieces with your hands," Fox said as he demonstrated. "Just mix it for a minute and then you can put the cloth in and use it. Just make sure the water is room temperate and not too much hotter or it won't be as effective."

The kitsune stirred the solution for a minute with his hand and then handed the bowl to the other man. "Like I said earlier, the full effect isn't immediate but you should feel a slight pain relief within a minute. If that doesn't happen, please let me know and take off the cloth because it's possible that you are allergic or something else unusual is happening."

(04:33:15) Quentin_Boone: Quentin picked up the cloth, dipped it into the water and wrung it out a little before tentatively putting it against his near-blind eye. He watched the other man closely, waiting for any signs that he was expecting some misfortune on the bearded brawler. He saw none, so decided to try picking up on idle conversation. "So, wha' job d'ya do tha' needs ya to smell an' taste so well?"

(04:42:02) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "As I mentioned earlier, I'm a potion crafter by trade and also do quite a bit with herbs and medicine too. My old mentor trained me to the point of death to be able to figure out what plants and safe and useful just from smell and taste. That old witch didn't hold back at all... As part of my 'education', she would blindfold me and give me some random poison. I had to quickly figure out which potion to make to counter the effects. Believe me, it's very tough and I thought I would die a few times," Fox grimaced slightly as he recalled painful memories. "So what is your occupation if you don't mind saying? I would take a guess you are or were a fighter of some sort by your well built body and alertness."

(04:47:39) Quentin_Boone: Quentin noticed that the throbbing had lessened slightly around his eye, but kept the cloth to his face as he responded to the man with a slight chuckle. "My job's pretty much like yer trainin' I reckon. I fight in 'Citadel as I said, an' ya can never be sure y'aint gonna die in there."

He took another draw of the tobacco and let the smoke rise above him by inclining his head. "It aint really much of a job though. An' I'm gerring a bit old for the gig. Per'aps you've something to make me ten years younger!"

(04:54:02) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "Ha Ha, seems like everyone wants a potion of youth and/or eternal life. Well, they do exist and I have read a book with a recipe for similar types of stuff. Of course, the ingredients are nearly impossible to find or obtain. But if you find them, I would be willing to make it for free since I always wanted to craft a legendary tier potion," Fox laughed slightly at the question. "Oh, I believe it's been over a minute now. Does the herb seem to working for you?"

(05:00:16) Quentin_Boone: Quentin chuckled. As much as he wouldn't mind being ten years younger so he could earn the proper money for his friends back at The Empty Hand, he knew it would never happen and was resigned to that fact. He knew that their situation would change eventually; sooner rather than later, he hoped. "Aye, it seems to be working, bud. Do I need t'take it off now, or can I leave it on a bit longer?"

He took a swig of mead and noticed he was nearly finished but didn't call the barkeep for more. He was still a little wary of the stranger and had the fight to think about. He knew he needed his wits about him. "So, what's yer name?"

(05:10:35) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "Well, if the pain is gone, it should stay that way for an hour or two assuming you don't do anything that strains your body like a fight or hard work out," the kitsune replied as he finally received the hot soup he ordered. He passed the newly earned copper over to the bar keeper for payment. "The name's Fox because I'm a kitsune and apparently my mother is very bad at thinking up good names. How about yours?"

As he waited for a reply, Fox swiftly devoured the soup to fill his very empty stomach.

(05:16:01) Quentin_Boone: Quentin lifted an eyebrow as he watched the man ravenously devour the soup, "Name's Quentin. Nice t'meet ya."

He held out his hand when the man was finished with his meal. "But I can't guarantee I'll not exert meself; I've a fight in a little while."

Quentin threw the cloth back into the water and took the other leaf and put it into his coin bag. "Ya welcome to watch if ya want, if ya ask those damned monks they'll direct ya to Adal's arena. He's me ringmaster, see, arranges all me fights. Might get 'im to speak with ya too, monks deal with most injuries, but if ya've potions for sickness, he might appreciate 'em t'keep the roster full."

(05:21:32) Fox_Owen_Xavier: Fox took the hand and gave it a firm shake. "Well, it's a pleasure being able to assist a nice person like you. I guess the effects might wear out during the fight but at least that other leaf should help you get a solid rest afterwards. As for your offer of watching the fight, I wouldn't mind coming if you don't mind. Bit low on potions but I can make some more if you or Mr. Adal would like to purchase some. I could even make ones to give you a boost in fighting power but I'm guessing that might be frowned on in more proper fights like in the citadel," Fox answered.

(05:33:25) Quentin_Boone: "Not really my style. I fight wi' wha' I wa' born wi' an' nothing else. Adal might be interested though, so long as 'is fighters do well, 'e aint too bothered 'bout how they do it. I'll see wha' I can do for ya." Quentin downed he rest of his drink and took a couple more long draws of the pipe before tapping out the still-smouldering tobacco onto the steel plate on the bar. He placed the pipe atop the pouch and coughed a little before standing.

"Well, Fox, I need to get goin' so I can prep for the fight and negotiate me wages with Adal. Ask those damned monks to see me after I've fought an' I'll see that Adal lets ya at least pitch yer wares. Can't make promises b'yond that, I'm afraid. It wa' good meetin' ya."

(05:39:24) Fox_Owen_Xavier: "Sounds great. I wish you the best of luck in your fight and hope that you will win your fight without taking any new injuries. Already have enough injured people to treat so I would prefer if my new friend doesn't get added to the list," Fox said with a chuckle. "I'll come by a bit later to watch your fight after I eat another bowl of soup. This stuff is a bit thin but that's probably because I like my meat."

"Great to meet you, Mr. Quentin and hope we can get along well in the future."

(05:43:13) Quentin_Boone: Quentin nodded, then navigated his way through the people in the tavern, happy to have found another potential ally. Even happier that the man wasn't there to kill him. As he stepped out into the busy street, the bearded brawler had a small smile on his face.

For reference, chat logs can be found for the second portion of the encounter from 03:04:11 BST(GMT+1) on 1st April 2014 if evidence is required. I can't remember the date of the first half, though.
