Gawain the Wise

• Name: Gawain Shahmat
• Age: 15
• Race: human
• Hair Color: brown
• Eye Color: silver infused with black
• Height: 6’2”
• Weight: 180
• Occupation: used to be a farmer, now is more of a traveler.

• Personality: He has very well defined views. He despises bloodshed, especially when not necessary. He is also somewhat of an incurable romantic for such things a chivalry. On the flip side he is also a cynic and, as such, doesn't agree with much of what is said. He doesn’t like to be proven wrong but will concede to a point if he is wrong and the point is well put. He also does at times tend to talk too much but tries not to with people he doesn’t know. He will try and find out as much a he can by saying as little as possible but will sometimes instigate a conversation or argument.

• Appearance: A low key, quiet type. Perhaps a scholar fallen on hard times as he has such rough hands. About 20 and not disfigured in really obvious or disturbing way.

• History: Gawain used to work with his uncle’s on the farm that his father had willed him before he disappeared when he was 10. His mother disappeared while looking for him. He now barely remembers either of them. He worked on the farm for the next 5 years. Then, one day, he was injured. Up 'till then he had been told that he had not a scrap of magic. The healer was trying to heal his broken leg with magic and everything he tried wouldn't work. Gawain's uncle tried to get his deposit back and the healer refused, saying that he hadn't been told that Gawain had null or void magic. While Gawain was healing he went and asked a wise woman from his town what “noid” magic was. After she stopped laughing she asked him why he wanted to know about void magic. He related to her the events that had happened. As he spoke her face grew still. She then told him a story that she claimed had never been told in generations. She said that this was a very rare type of magic, called null or void magic, so rare that only one could teach it today. His name was Tol~chin~wai Yan which means “he who is even though he is not”. Those who have null or void magic cannot, until they are trained, be healed by common magic. It would take vast amounts of energy that are usually reserved for battle. Even then, there is no guaranty that the healing would not become undone. Healing wounds must be done without magic and that takes longer. Gawain's uncle was not happy, to put it kindly. Even though Gawain asked to go out and search for Tol~chin~wai Yan, he wouldn't let him off. One day, while Gawain was resting in the lee of the oak tree, he heard his uncle talking to a work hand. The man was trying to get a leave of absence so that he could see his wife and baby. Gawain's uncle refused, calling him a slacker. Afterwards, Gawain went up to the man and made a deal with him that he would release him for 3 months if he could get him out of the town. The man agreed and they made their escape a fortnight afterwards. Gawain went off to the forest where he had heard that Tol~chin~wai Yan lived in. This is where we are at present.

• Skills: As stated above, Gawain has void magic. Void magic is very rare and is difficult to master. Right now it is more of a knee-jerk reaction. He might touch a small charm and the magic is suddenly gone. Then again, it might still be there. Void magic appears to be very much like water and oil. The water is still there but below the surface. Eventually it can be like a wineskin, it collects magic, it can be used, but it doesn't create it. At this stage in his development, he has very little use of it. The main weapon he has now is a dirk and a quarterstaff. He is about average at quarterstaff fights. He uses the dirk mainly as a cooking utensil. He is very poor with it as a weapon and uses mostly it to hunt or cook with.

• Equipment: He has a quarterstaff and a dirk. The quarterstaff is a rather dark red coloured oak with no real blemishes and no metal. He hasn't much armour save a light chain-mail suit that is not particularly robust but is easy to repair with his care kit. He has a small emergency kit and a cloak. The emergency kit is essential as he cannot be healed by magic. It contains mostly herbs, bandages, needles and such. He also has a writing kit including a pen, a few scrolls, and a stylus (stylus as is an old fashion writing instrument) in a waterproof container. He has a leather cloak, hiking boots, a few books and some gold pieces that are hidden for an emergency.

• Familiars: Even though he doesn't have a familiar just yet, I plan to have him meet a magical tiger that will travel with him. The tiger will be a rather shady fellow and will not be very reliable for help in battle. He [the tiger] will stay with Gawain since Gawain will have saved him.

Be careful not to to anything too powerful with the void magic. Stick with very weak effects until you level up.

Gawain appears to be a little too skilled with his quarterstaff and his dirk. Make him a 'below average' fighter with each. That doesn't mean he can't still be the best fighter in his village, but it'll mean the others who live there are pretty miserable fighters.

His quarterstaff's material is too high-quality. That sort of wood, you need to purchase at one of the continental bazaars, or obtain in a quest. Change it so that the staff is made of typical wood such as oak. You can have it so it was dyed red or something, so you can keep the nice color.

Operate under the assumption that the staff is made of oak.

Approved!
