Alexander Morningstar
Age: 24
Race: Human
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 146 lbs.
Occupation: Paladin
Personality: Alexander’s greatest strength and biggest weakness lie in his unshakable conviction. He believes he is the avenging high priest of a forgotten god and that his actions are divinely inspired. His faith makes him incorruptible and unshakable, but it also makes it hard for him to see when he’s wrong or blinded by his own pride. Despite his black-and-white views, he has an abundance of sympathy for the wronged and downtrodden and will always hear their plight.
History: Born the third son of an obscure minor noble, Alexander was condemned to a mundane life of petty court politics. With no apparent escape and no purpose in life, he frequented the small library in his family’s keep. For the majority of his nineteenth year, he lived between the pages books, experiencing life vicariously through the legendary figures he read about. He developed a particular fondness for philosophical and religious texts. Alexander felt they lent a sense of meaning and significance to his otherwise-pointless days. One day, he found a dusty tome bound in grey leather wedged behind a treatise on Salvarian conflict. His life was forever changed.
The book piqued his curiosity. It was filled with verse after verse of prayer and holy scripture dedicated to a forgotten god of justice. Over the coming year, Alexander studied the book unceasingly. His mind began to wonder during every meaningless ceremony and boring dinner. He thought of all the injustice in the world. The tyrants, the criminals, the corrupt nobles. How could anyone be content to sit back their entire life when they had the smallest measure of power to make the world a better place?
He posed the same question to his father, mother, siblings, and friends, but they all shrugged it off. They were perfectly content with their lives and had no desire to right the wrongs of the world. Alexander, however, was not.
One sleepless night, he crept out of bed and went to the small chapel in his family’s keep. Alexander fell to his knees and begged the unknown god he’d read about to speak to him, to bless him with a purpose. He knew the prayers and invocations in the book by heart. The book had provided no name for the god, so he simply called him the Grey God after the book’s coloration.
His prayers were answered.
Within moments of ending his prayers, a resounding voice filled the small chapel and the cold, unlit candles burst to life. Alexander has never told a living soul what that voice said, but that night packed a handful of belongings, strapped a humble iron longsword and knife to his belt, and left the keep he’d grown up in without saying goodbye or looking back. He even abandoned the book. He no longer needed it. Alexander knew he carried its words were etched onto his soul itself.
Over the next six years, Alexander built as small reputation for himself. He wandered the lands of Althanas fighting bandits here and orcs there. Wherever he goes, he preaches a gospel of justice for the forgotten man and retribution for the wronged. The battlefield has become his temple, the hum of his longsword descending his hymn of worship.
Appearance: Between his towering stature, faded grey cloak, chipped scalemail, golden hair, and piercing blue eyes, Alexander has the look of a battered archangel. When he is surrounded by the creatures of darkness and his sword burns with light, his avenging celestial appearance is only confirmed.
Skills:
Swordplay: As the son of a nobleman, even a minor one, Alexander was trained in combat from an early age. He is experienced with a longsword, dagger, and any combination of the two. While he is a capable warrior, he hasn’t seen enough bloodshed to be an expert.
Charisma: Alexander has a fierce, vibrant energy about him. He has a natural talent for persuasion and attracting followers.
Leadership: Alexander has a firm background in military tactics. He knows how to inspire troops and effectively deploy them in combat.
Abilities:
-Flames of Judgement: At will, Alexander can call upon the Grey God to empower his longsword. It blazes with a fiercely radiant white flame and is especially effective against demons and the undead (about 1.5x the damage his blows would normally do, and disregards resistance to slashing/stabbing weapons). The flames last until he wills them extinguished.
-Voice of God: Once per day, Alexander can use his divine power to enhance his communicative abilities. When he speaks, his voice reasonates with celestial authority. He can use this to persuade, intimidate, or inspire. Those with strong convictions or resistance to mind altering effects can shrug this off.
-Celestial Light: Three times per day, Alexander can lay his hands on a person (including himself), speak a prayer, and heal minor injuries. He can also use this to cure minor diseases or stabilize moderate wounds.
Equipment:
-Iron Longsword: An old but lovingly cared for and sharpened weapon, Alexander alway keeps his longsword close at hand. Though the sword was archaic when he acquired it, Alexander’s constant maintenance keeps the blade sturdy and untouched by rust.
-Iron Dagger: A wickedly sharp curved knife Alexander keeps honed to a razor’s edge.
-Iron Scale Mail: A shirt of iron Scale mail
-Grey Cloak: A battered, faded cloak. While it is old, it is well made and shows no sign of falling apart in the near future. It covers his armor and helps to keep the chill and wet out. The color of the garment represents the philosophy of Alexander’s god. Grey stands for objective, impartial justice.
-Holy Symbol: A simple pendant of iron hammered into the shape of a pair of balanced scales. While it isn’t required for Alexander to call upon the powers of his god, it serves as a focus for the divine energy he channels.
