So... How did you name your character? Did you name them after someone? Did you randomly type liken crazy until something sounded good? Did you look it up online?

My characters:
- It's funny how I got Ashla's first name. I was having an extremely hard time finding one and Black Shadow was like "Okay, uh, get something that starts with... 'a'" or something like that and about several minutes after looking at a still half-blank character sheet I landed on the name Ashla. And since I loved (and still love) ice and frost so much I randomly thought up "Icebreaker".
- Dawn FlameShadow is named after a stick-figure character I made as a kid <_<
- I used the name "Julius" because I like that name a lot, I got "Tabor" as a Latin word for "Fire" and that's how I named Julius Tabor.
- I got Fulgur's first and middle names after endless searching for cool names online.
- A friend suggested "Kaida" for for that. I thought "Jetta" sounded good as her first name and it goes well with her alias "The Jet".
- I heard the name 'Gwendolyn' for the first time and fell in love with it, I told myself that the next character I made would have that first name.

Fulgur is also a character in the Killer Instinct series of fighter games.

Never heard of it. I barely game :P

Do you want share the story behind your character's name though?

Andy, you have shamed me sir. Though I still have my original Gameboy version of it sitting upstairs. I think I now have my night planned out. :P To be fair though, with my accent both sound the same anyway.

And BlueGhost, there isn't a story. I just chose the name. *shrugs*

Enigmatic Immortal

5/5 I really like the choice of...

Oh...not doing that? >_>

Ha, kidding.

Jensen was a name that just popped into my head the second he was created. He was originally an asshole villain in my mind, with immortality, and an ego complex. (What changed, right?) Well he was never supposed to fall in love, Stephanie was supposed to be a sycophantic follower, and he was always supposed to be the Champion of Famine who literally, not figuratively, lost his mind. (Most iconic moment I could recall was being shot in the left eye by an arrow, standing up with arrow in face and being asked by his subordinate if it hurt. Jensen chuckles, rips it out, stabs the other guy in the face and asks him how it felt.)

So to me, that name carries enough weight to it to be able to hold such lofty titles above him. No normal name was fitting, and no fantasy name seemed right. It had to be a name you don't hear often to really make him the enigmatic man he is today. Jensen fit.

As for Ambrose, when I decided to make Jensen a PC and not an NPC, I looked up words for Immortal. Upon searching I stumbled upon the old legend of Ambrosia (The fruit of the gods that grants immortality - for you who don't know.) I like to leave little hints like that in my writing, and so I just decided to take the name and cut it up a little. Thus, the Ambrose name was born.

Very funny -_-

I approve of the name Ambrose, for an entirely different reason.

The writer Ambrose Bierce, author of 'The Devil's Dictionary'. Nothing to do with the Devil, as it happens, but the single most cynical and bitter book I have ever read. A dry read at times, as it is literally his choosing words, and applying his own cynical meaning for them. But oh God, so so good.

Philomel
04-29-14, 04:14 PM
YO here is a list of mine.

Philomel Serkena van der Aart ...
"Philomel" is "Philomel" because it has been my pseudonym for so many RPs now its crazy. As my first character here, after finding the name was free as a use name, it was pretty awesome. Her character just got built up around it, and I also love the bird its named for - the nightingale.
Her middle name "Serkena" is actually the feminised version of a half-vampire of mine from a Harry Potter RP I admined. He was pretty much my favourite all round character in that RP.
As for her last name; "van der Aart" literally means "of the clearing" (I think). I may be wrong in this, but when I came up with it, it fitted because I imagined her mother's past life having been in Underwood, which is in a massive clearing...

Leaf Enna van der Terra:
"Leaf" is just a word I love. And ever since I read the Edge Chronicles where one of the main characters is called "Twig" I had a romantic sense of using "Leaf" for something... hence Leaf being born here.
"Enna" is another half-vampire I once made for an old RP, and its actually the name of Phi and Leaf's father so it fitted here as Leaf's middle name.
"Van der Terra" like "van der Aart" means "of the ..." in this case "of the earth." (Terra is Latin for earth)
-Note, I now imagine all fauns have likewise names, meaning "of the forest" or "of the mountain" etc.

As for the Marquis...
Aesh is a self-mutilated form of the name Ash, which I have always loved, and love more because of the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series. I have also used this name in Shadowrun, D and D, Mist online Uru...
Fallow... is a type of deer. I like deer.

Ambrose Bierce is also who coined Carcosa, a sort of meme in classic horror fiction which has seen various incarnations in Chambers' The King in Yellow (a personal favorite) and Lovecraft's work... and may sound familiar to anyone who's read The Wandering Isle or knows what Luned's up to nowadays.

I wanted something Welsh for Luned, so I searched for something unique and used it.

Phi: You administrated a website before? Cool!

I like how you came up with the last names, not just using one word but an entire sentence and all. That was a boundary I was unwilling to cross with my characters, and your last names sound awesome too!

Luned: I never thought of using Welsh for a name before, and it is a good name! ^_^

I approve of the name Ambrose, because Dean Ambrose is a magnificent bastard and probably my favorite wrassler right now.

Luned, I didn't realise that was where the inspiration came from. Between that, and Andy's inspiring me to play killer Instinct, you have both just made my night.

Crafters Three

Totally original character I think. Just sorta sat and wrote. Yada.

Vasil is basically the word basil with a V. Mirkglaive. Not sure.

Bierce also pretty much came up with the predator before Predator.

Lye
04-29-14, 05:55 PM
Lye derives from Lichensith, which was generated with a the undead lich in mind. The "ensith" portion just seemed to flow. I've always had issues with names over one syllable. The Ulroke was a terrible attempt to generate a japanese name from what I knew of the language back in 2004.

Overall, I do not care for the name these 10 years later. I would like to rename him, but I need some monumental IC event to cornerstone the change.

Sorish Mon Larsh
Sorish was just a random name. However, as soon as I got that name I instantly said Mon Larsh.

Abrinano Ticherra Voscinato
Abrinano started out as Abraham but then I thought why not remove the ham and change the 2nd a to an i then add nano(miniature) just to just for a laugh.
Ticherra Was just a random name that started with T.
Voscinato sounded like a fancy chef's name so I decided to go with it.

Barnabas Casimir Tourneymant
Tourneymant was the first name I came up with. It actually started out with Tourney + Man but then I just couldn't leave it at that so I add a t to make it Tourneymant.
Barnabas & Casimir sounded like good tournament names so I just went with them.

Korra Jeannine Relt
Korra was close to Coral.
Jeannine is the name of one of my aunts
ReltI just picked that at random

?
If he is a random stranger then why would we know his name?

Grond The Zombie
Grond the Zombie was actually influenced by Stubbs the Zombie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KY68Tx5LHdo) (Gore Warning)

Timothy Gold...
Timothy is my First Name.
Gold came from where he first landed through his time travel.

Invetisto de Masinoj
Invetisto de Masinoj actually mean Inventor of Machines in Esperanto

Jaliban Mor Galidon
This name was completely random

Turtle
He's a turtle.

Roy Pockis
Roy Pockis is a character that I made a while ago just decided to use him in this.

Downfall
Downfall was decided upon since he needed a destructive name.

Bella Florentine
I don't know if it is an exact translation but I think of it meaning Beautiful Flower in French.

Jacob Kneller
Just another random name

Samuel Leprechaun
I had a good friend named Samuel and of course he is a Leprechaun.

Bella Florentine is not a translation from French.

The second word does not come up as anything, but Bella is Italian for beautiful. Or Bello, one of the two.

Beau is the French word for beautiful.

Nice!

black shadow
04-29-14, 08:14 PM
Well for Black Shadow, I originally planned on him being extremely stealthy, no revealing himself unless he absolutely had to, so that's where "Shadow" came in, and he wears all black.

His real name "Ardon Feril" that I have mentioned in a few of my threads, but not all of them, was just a "give me a random letter" moment where I was given an A and F and put random letters until I found a name that I liked.

Amber Eyes

I don't go too out there with my characters names.

Kyla Marie Orlouge- I always planned to name a daughter Kyla (after certain turns in the storyline that will no longer be happening :) ) When I first started the name was the first to pop in my mind so I went with it.

Akiv Orlouge- Akiv is short for Akiva which in Hebrew is Yaweh may protect. I liked the idea that it isn't assuming he will be protected, but he might be :P

Cellar Door- This phrase is peppered throughout literature. It is often considered the most beautiful phrase in the English language on phonetics alone.

None of my other characters really have much of a story to their names, they are either super common or just something I liked.

Florentine is the adjective for anything that comes from Florence, which is the capital of Tuscany in Italy.

Glad to see so much Bierce love in this thread!

"Belle" is the feminine form of "beautiful" in French, but the only context I have of Florentine is food-related... hence it is clear that the name "Bella Florentine" means "beautiful spinach". Sounds delicious.

I guess I was thinking about Flora which is usually talking about flowers.

Otto
04-30-14, 06:02 PM
'Otto', partly because of this guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_von_Bismarck) and his fine moustache. Plus, who doesn't like palindromes?

And 'Bastum', as I read somewhere that it is a possible root word for 'bastard'. I thought it would be cool if I went a little Game of Thrones and came up with a surname given to bastards (or, in this case, foundlings - so more like Discworld, I guess?) in whichever part of the world Marten and Kat hail from.

So a few years ago my buddies and I were raiding and the discussion turned to who would have the coolest Zombieland name. If you don't know, none of the major characters in Zombieland are given real names, they all go by their hometown (so the main guy is Columbus, for example). I was universally declared the winner with "Flint." I have always enjoyed giving my Salvic characters vaguely Eastern European or Scandinavian names, so Skovik came from that (it's actually a mashup of another character name and my long-time screen name, Skogul and Tauvyk. Also I think it might be a kind of Norwegian owl or something).

Marcus Book was just something I threw together because it sort of described the character. Marcus is a man of violence, hence having a name derived from the roman god of war, but he's also a detective and scholar, hence "book." Because I'm super clever.

The rest of them I just kind of came up with on a whim. I think I got Iarion from a site full of elf names? And Throm just kinda just generically orc-y. Oh! Odessa Krowe was named after a couple of streets. I drive around a lot for work, so I see a lot of interesting street names.

I remember, about a decade ago, I was planning on doing a flash animation Cowboy Bebop ripoff that had Madison as one of the leading trio of bounty hunters. The joke behind her last name was that her grandparents were really into the 60s, and changed their own last name to Freebird as a spiritual gesture, and none of their descendants bothered to fix it from there.

Alexander Morningstar
04-30-14, 08:00 PM
Alexander Morningstar gets his name from the biblical passage (sort of) about Lucifer, the "Bright Morning Star." I wanted him to put off a tragically flawed archangel vibe. His tragic flaws are his idealism and pride, so he's similar.

Talen comes from a david eddings book. The main character goes trough a town at pne point and has to meet with the leader. Talen was the name of one of the thieves. Fast forward a few years and the first character i made was called Talen (although he was an adult). I reserected the chacter when i joined here. Shadowalker is a bit of a joke. Talen's first name was adopted on the streets. His second he picked. Given that he was a kid without a lot of exposure to the world he picked a cool sounding name, when it is kinda lame. The one 'w' is becuase he wanted it to be pronounced as one word.

I dont use him really anymore, but i had a character Raksha the Seeker. Raksha in hindi is protection, and it was one of the dominating themes of his story line. He was driven to protect those around him, especially anyome he had a bond with. There were three nymphs in particular, one called Chandra Soma. Chandra is a lunar diety in hindi, and Soma was a ritual drink. So her name meant, (to me) moon drink. The next was Kira Flame-tounge. The first name was more for the japanese use of Kira, or killua, etc. Basically the name meaning a killer. When given to characters who are generally passive it generally means someone who hates killing and violence, but oftem as too, and is quite good at it. (think kira from bleach). The last name was because she was a hot head. Lastly Shiva Blue-eyes. She was a water nymph and keeping with te hindu stuff, had the godess Shiva's name. I didnt get to develop her too much, but i was going to draw on the blue tounge mythology.

Astarelle Set'Roh - She was inspired by the dancer in Adele's Rolling in the Deep (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw&feature=kp). So.. I guess I just added some letters. Set'Roh is more a title than a proper last name. It means "Daughter of Roh". Like everything in the Farohtian language, it's random words that I come up with when I need them. I try to keep track to avoid contradicting myself later.

Shadar Logath - One letter away from copyright infringement. (http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Shadar_Logoth)

Onyx Calico, Diamond Jackal, etc - Gemstone plus animal. Easy.

Edgar - It always struck me as a name that was a little bit ugly, a little bit derp. So, perfect fit for my favorite widdle Edgar. (He's half mannequin and half ghost-returned-to-flesh.)

So adorbs!!!

Binky Wetburrow - First name was given during the Gisela where he was just a joke character. Last name was decided later. Definitely a low caste name. I don't know if the rabbits assign a family renown based on their name, or a name based on their renown. Might never know. Rabbits are funny that way.

Commander Puddles Butterworth of Her Majesty's Royal Hare Forces - He's bloomin' Puddles Butterworth!

Nice call on Edgar. I used the name Elspeth for a evil characters because it sounds like Elisabeth's evil cousin. The name actually derives from the same root and means Chosen by God. Seems wonderfully dichotomous from the actual character.

I also used to make up names, but generally for items sounding vaguely like one of the romantic languages Del Morte Sala as Sword of the Dead. Then using Sala as sword i can use Sa to mean knife, but attaching words of single syllable to the last word. So Del Morte'Sa as Knife of the Dead. A bow might be Far'della'fa far = male, Della = come from and fa the shortened form of fellow meaning wing; so feather. Translating literally to Feathers of the fathers. Or more accurately Feathers of our Ancestors.
