Tell me what your favorite Final Fantasy game is and why. If there are any of them that got on your nerves, feel free to spew a little Final Fantasy hate.

8.

Yeah, I said it.

... Can we get married?

Even though I've replayed 8 and find it incredibly cheesy, I still find it to be my favorite. Cyd, you rock my socks.

I couldn't decide between 8 and 9 so voted 9. 8 was the first Final Fantasy I ever played, so it will always have a place in my heart, but I love 9's story and play style. Seven is also awesome and doesn't really need any elaboration.

In terms of FF hate... Anything past 10 really gets my hatred. Awful voice acting, MMO-style gameplay, kinda lame stories. And let's not forget that Nobuo Uematsu left Square-Enix a couple of games ago (if not more, can't remember) so the scores have really suffered a hit. This makes me hate the more recent games even more.

The one exception is X-2. While, for the most part, it has the same things I hate about any post-PSX Final Fantasy, the dress sphere gameplay was an awesome and interesting twist on the old Job system. Also, A Thousand Words.

FF6 is my second favorite. Dancing Mad > any other FF final battle music ever.

9, but I will say this.

I loved the hell out of 8. The reason why 8 didn't win is because in all honesty, both games stacked up equally. Plot, characters, items, epicness, and world all tied. So why 9?

It was the first. When I say, the first, it was the first. My RPG cherry rested with the safe arms of 9. I was blown away that I could get so wrapped up in a story and stay up forever, like a book, trying to reach the end. The twists, the turns, I loved them all, and I seriously thought I couldn't get that rush again. Pleasantly surprised that 8 did that for me. I was entranced, enthralled, and motivated. Those two games were what made me want to write. I wanted to tell epic stories like that. (To be fair, a special mention to Chrono Cross is needed here too, as that completed the trifecta.)

So ya...I love 9 the most. It's the doorway to a whole new world for me, and I cannot thank it enough.

(Though i personally don't get the mad cow disease rape fest for 7, just didn't like Cloud.)

EDIT:
Dancing Mad was supposed to be the theme for lunatic Jensen, the evil character I always imagined. :D

The only vote for 7, eh?

At the time, the graphics blew me away. I love 4 through 6, but 7 takes the cake for me. It's the reason I went with a Playstation instead of an N64.

You can't really beat an actual car chase with motorcycles and giant swords, not one but TWO city-sized cannons, the best Cid of any series (FF4 Cid is a close second), and everything about Gold Saucer. Besides Metal Gear Solid, it was the first time I felt like games had a movie element to them.

Dirks: I still own the BoF2 SNES cartridge. Definitely my favorite Breath of Fire, for sure.

Sabin.

I...he can suplex a goddamn train (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u84cH_bmTA), why are we still having this conversation.

This is why Warpath and I will always be friends.

Definately 6 you guys. The characters were all so different, you actually grew to care about General Leo, and the most important aspect.

Kefka, the main villain of the game, ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED HIS GODDAMN GOAL! NO OTHER FINAL FANTASY FINAL BOSS CAN SAY THAT!

Enigmatic Immortal
05-12-14, 05:52 PM
But...they did. In ten, yeva or whatever already fucked up the world for years.

In 8 ultemecia accomplished her goal. Albeit a short time.

Didn't garland live in a time loop where he becomes chaos? I think so....

Mutant_Lorenor
05-12-14, 06:05 PM
For the record, that's one of the early Blitzes that Sabin gets. And the train he speaks of is a god damned undead monstrosity called Doom Train if I recall correctly.

Even playing through that game as an adult, it is STILL my favorite in the entire FF series. FF 6/American FF 3 hahahah. FF wasn't supposed to continue after 3 but we gobbled the whole series up didn't we?

Silence Sei
05-12-14, 07:57 PM
But...they did. In ten, yeva or whatever already fucked up the world for years.

The world wasn't destroyed so much as it was living in fear of Sin, but Sin, or even Yu Yevon were successful. They came damn close, but they were not.

In 8 ultemecia accomplished her goal. Albeit a short time.

Ultimecia also did not accomplish her goal, or the kids (save Rinoa) would have been dead at the orphanage. Her whole plot involved goig back in time to make it to where Sorceresses ruled over up until her time (when she already ruled). While she was ruling, her goal was not complete.

Didn't garland live in a time loop where he becomes chaos? I think so....

Garland succeded, but Garland was not the ultimate boss of 5, Chaos was, and Chaos did not destroy everything as he had hoped.

Not a single village was left undecimated by Kefka, however.

6 wins for second favorite because of Kefka and Dancing Mad, but...

Ten is my favorite of all time.

Chrono Cross hate is not to be tolerated.

Chrono Trigger is to Chrono Cross like The Empire Strikes Back is to the Star Wars Christmas Special.

Silence Sei
05-12-14, 09:03 PM
Thats the problem; you view Chrono Cross as a sequel rather than its own game.

it's an abortion as a sequel to the masterpiece of Chrono Trigger, but it is a wonderful game when you take away any notions that its a sequel.

BlackAndBlueEyes
05-12-14, 09:06 PM
Here's the thing. I played it later on after I discovered that it wasn't a sequel to Trigger, and that it only shared the name Chrono in the title and nothing else.

And I still thought it was pretty shit. Worse than Legend of Dragoon, even.

Silence Sei
05-12-14, 09:09 PM
Andy.....

Legend of Dragoon

Was a goddamned masterpiece.

Elthas_Belthasar

Actually if you play right through Cross they make tons of references to the events of Chrono Trigger.

It was Schalla (Magus's mom) who caused the initial temporal loop that eventually allows Chrono and his peeps to travel back and forth freely through time.

Now the kicker is, that one dude named Miguel or something was Chrono's Father if I'm not mistaken. Whose mentioned like NOWHERE in the first game. But I do agree that Trigger V Cross they are mostly stand alone games. Cross still is a solid game on it's own right. I own both games, and the original disc for Chrono Cross in the original jewel case. You guys would LOVE my rpg collection. It goes all the way back to PSX. Anyway yea, I think that Cross and Trigger are BOTH masterpieces.

You kids wanna talk about old school, talk to me about Seikendetsu. Secret of Mana series :) . Yes the challenge has been issued :P .

And for the record, I agree with Sei Legend of Dragoon was ahead of it's time.

Tobias Stalt
05-12-14, 10:27 PM
Schala was Magus' sister, not mother.

Also, Schala got inadvertently sucked into a temporal rift when the Mammon Machine was overloaded, and her body was fused with Lavos. That's how he gained the ability to travel through dimensional rifts, rather than just back and forth through time. Her power caused a distortion that created an infinite number of worlds that Lavos fed upon ("the Devourer of Time") as he awaited the moment of his awakening. (The Day of Lavos.) The reason that Lavos exists in Chrono Cross (takes place 20 years after the events of Chrono Trigger, but is not considered a direct sequel because of certain nuances; Crono dies when he's sacrificed to the Mammon Machine, and when you have to interject the clone and change his fate, Chrono loses his "fated" position as the Chrono Trigger, who is the Arbiter between FATE and the Frozen Flame. Serge later becomes the Chrono Trigger when he's touched by the Flame during childhood. That's why he doesn't exist in both worlds. He actually died in one, whereas FATE kept him in the other in order to gain access to the Flame once Serge crossed the threshold. FATE herself lost access to the Flame and subsequently became deranged and psychotic) is because Schala's powers allowed Lavos to elude it's imminent death by fleeing the Dimension where Crono was going to kill him.

The fan game Crimson Echoes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abUSev5e2Is&list=PLE952926C2A6E7039) was a fantastic sequel to Chrono Trigger.

Also, in terms of RPGs in general, the Shin Megami Tensei series is probably on top in terms of gameplay for me. The main SMT series, Persona series, DDS, Devil Survivor, all fantastic games.

As far as individual games, behind Chrono Trigger, it has to be Super Mario RPG. Then I would probably go Suikoden II and I, and Exit Fate (http://site.scfworks.com/?page_id=10), the spiritual successor to Suikoden II.

Then it's Xenogears.

Tidus. And this one is a tough call, because I despised him at first. Once I got really into the game (toward where he began to mature and had his disillusionment ripped away from him), I started to really ache for the kid. Here is an upbeat, positive guy with some issues about his dad who comes to find out that everything he knew was wrong. And on top of all that? He's nothing more than a dream conjured by a collective consciousness. A goddamn dream. If you didn't bawl at the end of X, you have no soul.

Enigmatic Immortal
05-14-14, 11:59 AM
I apparently have no soul. Tidus is not a character that I would say is bad, but nope. Never really felt that connection to him.

Could be Wakka pissing my dreams away when Tidus left the blitz game. Wakka flowndered in and suddenly I lost. Bastard....

I've played FF4 through FFXIII-3 (aka Lightning Returns) and my favorite is FFX, the first one. X-2 was an embarrassment and horrible in every way.

...

You know how most (if not all, now that I think of it) does like a little victory stance/dance of some kind? Lulu from FFX has the best one of this ... jiggle, jiggle lol. That isn't the only reason why I like it though.

I like the story, I like the characters (Auron my favorite, Tidus the cry baby the least favorite), and I like how the relationship behind Tidus and Yuna develops gradually as the game progresses. Plus, the summons are pretty awesome!

The only thing I didn't like about FFX, besides Tidus being a loser, was the final boss was an embarrassment. You can't lose! You can't even die! Wtf is that about? They must have gotten lazy towards the end lol!

As for FFX I I I it was an interesting twist on everything ff style. The story was eh... But the combat and visuals on it were pretty cool, so I gave it a 7 / 10 ... 13-2 was a 7.5 and 13-3 (Lightning returns) was a 8.75 / 10 ... looking at all the previews for FF15, however, makes it look like a first person shooter except it's in 3rd person. Sure the graphics look great, but it didn't feel anywhere close to FF to me. I agree with other people on here, the should have stopped at FFX. What do you guys think of the Recent ones?
