View Full Version : Writer's Inspiration
Okay, so here's another (*sigh*) random thread from me! (Yay!)
This thread is dedicated to any and all inspirations you've received towards writing your character, something about them, or even their backstory. Like how did you come up with their hobbies? Is there a character from a book, comic, show, or even video game that inspired your character's own fighting style? Was your character based off other characters you;ve created or a person you know in real life? If you're interested in sharing it, post here!
Here's some of mine:
- Ironically, apples are one of my least favorites fruits while Ashla is addicted to them. Now, I'll still eat apples when I'm in the mood, but they're usually just "eh" to me... How Ashla became an appleholic, I don't know. I think I finished watching some Death Note episodes to receive to whole apple inspiration at the time, dunno...
- Fireleaf is based off both my first and seconds cats, neither of which I own now :( (One of them I am able visit very often now though)
- Ashla is based off of multiple characters I created throughout my other stories before I joined the RPing world, the most recent before her being named "Ayleth", having extremely similar clothing and weapons, and even having similar abilities. She also was created with Ahsoka Tano in the back of my mind (and now she also has a bit of Blake from RWBY...)
- Fulgur II is pretty much what rocketed the whole Icebreaker, Tabor, and Eiskalt thing. Beforehand, Ashla was just... Ashla with a random last name and no formal origin. I was inspired to create Fulgur after watching yet another anime: Black Butler. xD Fulgur hardly is like the inspiring character at all though minus the hair and having only one visible eye.
- Gwendolyn was the only character who was put off and on the shelf for an entire character idea. One day I was just randomly propelled to finally bring her out after starting to play Lord of the Rings Online and wanting to create a crafter for Althanas.
- (Enough with character designs!) I adopted the "killing and abusing characters" habit from Dave Filoni...
Alydia Ettermire

Oh, all right, I'll bite.
I know there are a lot of popular characters with badass red trenchcoats and matching hats, but come on. Carmen Sandiego had style, poise, multiple awesome theme songs, and her whole gimmick was "I'm going to take this thing. You're going to be all WTF?! How the hell do you even TAKE that?! Then you're going to learn about it, this fantastic world we live in, and if you don't suck, I'll give it back. If you're really good, you might even catch me."
She also had minions with bad puns for names. That has carried over into Aly's people. Every single one of them, their name is a bad pun. From Paige Turner in Radasanth to Bron Retla in Ettermire to Sintta Ilya in Raiaera, all have bad puns for names.
Even Aly's name is related to Carmen's. Carmen means poem. Aly- means "song," and -dia means "thief" in the language I choose to portray for Alerians. And of course, Ettermire, Alerar's capital city, has an exotic sound to human ears (the reason Sandiego was chosen for Carmen's), and it has the right number of syllables. This character was going to be human or Elven or something else until I realized that Ettermire is the perfect city to name her after.
And there it was.
And she's awesome.

Honestly, I just made Shadow randomly. I didn't really have a reason to make him, or anything that inspired me to make him the way he is. He sorta just some to my mind. His personality on the other hand is a lot like mine. I literally just think about how I would react to events and that's what he does.
My other characters... They were all inspired by a character of some sort from a show, book, or game, and I feel as though that's really why I fell away from using them.

Early Kyla was based on the book The Mascot about a Jewish boy who grew up as a 'mascot' for an unknowing Nazi brigade.
She has come a long way since then though. Nowadays she's 3 parts my own personality and one part chaos.
Cellar comes from a lot of my own past. She has similar mannerisms to me, her autistic tendencies included. Her poetic nature and her time in the hospital as a child are straight from my own early years.
In terms of overall assassin-ness Nyric was a little Thren Fellhorn from the Shadowdance series mixed with some Durzo Blint from Night Angel.
Despite the fact that he's a dual-wielding dark elf, he is in no way related to Drizzt Do'Urden. If you think he is, you're a drow-profiling racist. :)

With a name like Draug I assumed you'd be a good character :p
Talen was first made many a moon ago. He kinda when through a whole range of persona and looks till the current incarnation. The name comes from a character in a David Eddings book I read in high school. The moves and abilities are a mixture of classic shadow magic and me wanting to get an outcome that I wanted and wrapping it in shadow magic.
Some of his abilities come from fighting games like KOF and anime like Naruto and Fary Tail.
Philomel

- Always have loved the name Philomel. Its been my RP female name for many years, my male one being Ash.
- This is Philomel's fifth or so incarnation. She has been a vampire, a witch in a Harry Potter RP, a human ... but this is when I have loved her most. I began making her with the chestnut hair about a year ago. Before that she had fiery red hair.
- As to her being an assassin, its my default go-to. I love sneak attacks. Always the Rogue I am in D and D etc.
- She doesn't really have a hobby ... though I am increasing her love of books. Trying to place that in. That and going for long walks, which is what I like. There is an intense amount of me in Philomel, the darker side of me and of what I want to be like. Her passion and her determination, her sassyness, is what I love.
- Veridian is named after a planet in the Star Trek film Generations. Foxes - well, he was made because I had been making friends with the fox on my street at the time. Who is called Renard, but ... yes, well foxes. And they are so pretty and rar!!!
- Philomel means Nightingale, hence the whole Nightingale thing. They sing beautiful, and come out at dusk/dawn, which are my favourite times of day.
- Philomel is partly inspired by Penatonix and Dubstep music.
- I am basing her Earth Mage skills on my favourite character from Avatar, the Last Airbender - Toph.
- Phi also has a incarnation on Lord of the Rings Online, called Carco (lit. Crow) who is a lore master and elemental mage.
Cydney and Dalasi are born of fusing Nordic myth and Viking bloodshed with a delicate fusion of high and dark elf cliches. He is, in essence, how I wished elves were portrayed: dark, dangerous, loyal, and enslaved by their own ideals.

You are my inspiration, BGOS...
Seriously! When I see people writing, discussing writing and generally having fun on Althanas, it makes me want to participate more. Kudos to all of you!
Alyssa Snow

Alyssa was originally born on a Final Fantasy VIII RP Website. She was an entry level cadet that progressed all the way to S Rank SeeD and became the right hand of Angelus Arcana and Leurana Cuerr (The Headmasters of Trabia and Balamb Garden at the time). Her weapons were originally designed by the Odine Labs for use by Esthar soldiers. In that story arc, she was also artificially grown to fuse with a prototype Odine device that allowed her to draw magic from monsters and store them into items. One of which were specially designed magic cartridges which the Shumi Villiage and Moomba helped manufacture. Odine designed the weapon that could fire these magically charged cartridges and when Alyssa's body took the infused technology, they began to run trials. During said trials, and since children are unable to control emotion, her body went berserk. It continually drew in and released magic as an EX Burst (something of a Limit Break) which devastated the R&D wing of the lab. Her "parents" (scientists which were against the inhumane treatment of the girl) recovered her from the wreckage and fled north. It was there that she was given to a small family in a Trabian Villiage and given her pseudo name of Alyssa Dianne Snow by her two mothers (Lesbian couple), Alyssa and Dianne. The last name Snow was given because of the perpetual winter up there. Afterwards, her journey was RPed, etc.
So her main influences were:
Final Fantasy VIII.
The desire to RP a scene where an important figure gets devastated by a long range Blizzaga explosion.
The desire to break away from the norm in terms of firearms.
A touch of Outlaw Star.
And a little Irvine/Selphie.
The eastern attire was just my personal interest in Asian cultures.
Green Gwendolyn

- Gwen's soon-to-be catchphrase "Crap" comes from a certain character from a show where the main character is a terrific athlete (Homestar!).
- I love reversed grips in any series or movie! Ahsoka from CW, Blake from RWBY, all the ninjas from Naruto... ... Gwen uses a reversed grip on any melee weapons she ever gets (she currently only has her twin assassin knives). She may grow as a melee fighter, but as of now she still sucks at melee combat. Eh, Ashla may teach her a thing or two...
Edgar Allan Poe has inspired my narration and tone. The Tell Tale Heart especially.

Larten Crepsley from The Saga of Daren Shan and The Saga of Larten Crepsley written by Daren Shan inspired me to create Gavner. Originally I made him similar in terms of character but then I developed my own style and he has become more of my creation. I can say tht Rudi inspired Eva but she is so much cuter than Rudi is :D
Tobias Stalt
01-17-15, 10:05 PM
There are essences of many things in Tobias; I used to role play on a Star Wars based website, where my character Alkor was a member of an isolationist group of Dark Jedi who meddled in the affairs of other groups only to preserve their own beliefs or destroy those they called enemies. His main attributes were stoicism, but also that he grew up in depravity. He had no issues with assuming a guise.
He also takes a page out of the Malazan Book of the Fallen in the form of Karsa Orlang, a barbarian who's view of the world slowly changes throughout the books.
