View Full Version : Void Halfling - Evil or just Misunderstood...

Void

Phi's fourth (*sigh*) character.

Idea behind this guy is that he is going to appear in Phi's storyline very soon (and Leaf's and maybe a few others). He is a response to the realisation of the fact that we need more villains and I don't really have one. A soul-destroyer, that is.

Main Information:

Name: Iota-Tau-Iota
Aka: Yakob de Void
Age: 13
Race: Void Halfling, subspecies of Void Elf
Gender: n/a (though uses pronoun "he")
Height: 3 ft 2 inches
Weight: 40 kg
Occupation: n/a

Personality:

There is no goodness in Yakob's heart. His soul is black even though his eyes are as golden as the sun. His god is Chaos itself, and he revels in his pandemonic mystery. He hardly realistically smiles, only to laugh at others, and is thoroughly moody. For a Halfling he is incredibly brutish and will gladly go on a killing spree if he does not get his own way. He currently lives in Salvar, aimlessly wandering and fixing things for others. He is an incredible actor, and is congenial much of the time to people as he learns how to manipulate them and get his way. His purpose is not so much to kill as it is to escape Althanas and society in general. If his true nature is found, or if he is not manipulating, one will find a grumpy brutish git beneath who will gladly kill for a loaf of bread and has problems with the word "morality".

Appearance and Race:

Race History: The Void Elves appeared from the space between Althanas and Haidia three or so centuries ago, coming from a space of nothingness that they call "the Void". It is invisible to the human eye, but not between them, being both a spiritual and a physical plane of existence. It did not take long for them to move from the Tular Plains to Alerar, where they established themselves amognst their dark kin. Their natural ability to negate magic made them fit in well with the fast-moving industrial revolution of the country, and they have gone from a mere handful of nomadic tribesmen to a contingent of nearly 4,300. They are geniuses in transportation, currently working a magical-combustion system.
They do not breed, but repopulate similar to ancient orcs, or fungi - that is, in spores, with large swamp-like gene pools where they literally grow into adult form. From this they keep aging. Since none have ever died of old age their life span is unknown.
Their designated names follow alphabetical, using an alphabet remarkably similar to the ancient greek one (:P). The first two words (eg iota-tau) are to identify which pool they are from and the last (eg iota) is of what hatching order they are. The handful that originally came from the Void are simply known as "Alpha-Primes."
Void Elves also need only eat twice a week, and have an intolerance to alcohol. If they drink it they either go insane for a few hours, killing anyone in their path, or develop brain tumors. This depends on person to person. (Yakob is of the former).

Void Elf Appearance: Slate-grey skin with vivid golden eyes, and pure white hair. The hair is worn in anyway that is pleasing, though usually in bunches and/or ponytail. They hardly ever cut their hair. Genderlessness from the gene pools gives them ambiguous body shapes and no genitals to speak of. They have gentle features, but are stockier than the Raiaerian High Elf, so closer to the Aleraran Dark Elf. Ears are long like a usual elf, and tapered (pointed).

Yakob's Appearance: Yakob is a Void Halfling, from the gene pool Iota-Tau, that reportedly "went amiss," one of twenty that were born. What occurred to the batch was that they were reduced to a Halfling height, only getting to 3.5 foot at most. He mostly is seen wearing the simple cloth of his people; a sleeveless black tunic, though he opts for a polo neck because now he lives in Salvar. He has a pair of cotton trousers beneath, and large boots. Personally he wears his hair in two thin bunches that drape over his shoulders. His ears are also pierced in many places, with silver rings dominating most of the holes. A scar lies over his left eye and a few others on his back. Though called Iota-Tau-Iota by his people he chose the name Yakob de Void for travelling. Though 13 he is an adult by Volid Elf standards.

Special: "Cravasse"
His left forearm was burnt in the battle that left his left eye scarred. Yakob himself quickly removed it and replaced from the elbow to the fingers with a brass and iron hand that works similar to a normal hand. It is secured to his body via straps connecting to the shoulder, and is obviously not flesh. However, the interior of the arm is entirely hollow, and the movement from arm to body and fingertip works entirely on Void. The base of the forearm itself is equipped with a very small, but accurate, folding crossbow of iron strength that unfolds by a single twisting mechanism on the inside of the elbow. It is a repeating bow, with a rotating barrel containing a stash of six thin-but-deadly iron bolts. These are shot by tightening the fist and thus touching the Void-lock on the heel of his hand. This bow cannot be stolen.

Main Skills:

Archery: Expert level. This being his main weapon he has been known to be able to hit a small knot on a cedar tree a hundred paces away.
Knife-fighter: Adept. In close combat Yakob switches from his bow to his knives, where he is capable but at a disadvantage because of his height.
Swordsman: Rubbish. A normal sword is too big and heavy for this little guy.
Survival: Expert. He can survive pretty well.
Acting: Childlike and small Yakob can act well. Pretending to be a kid he can get away with free food in most situations, and is an expert liar.
Small: Yakob is very good at fitting into tiny places and hiding.
Void Technology: Expert level of understanding.

Abilities:

Magical Negation:
A racial trait, Yakob is partially unable to be directly affected by magic. This accounts for spells, charms etc, including mental magics. This does not include any weapons that are enchanted, they will still work upon him, but a magically summoned ball of fire, for instance, will not burn him. Normal fire will, but anything magically summoned comes into contact with the Void that lurks within this Void Halfling's heart and is cancelled out of existence. This also includes telepathy and magical attacks on his mind. If an item is being thrown at him, however, telekenetically, it will affect him as the magic is focused on the object, not on Yakob. It also means he cannot himself activate any magical devices on a weapon, as his negating skin needs to come into contact with it.
Stats are as follows:
For any level character same level or below as Yakob the spell is 50% affective. If the magic wielder is above Yakob then the spell is 50% affective for 2 posts, or three spells (whatever comes first). After that he feels the full effect of anything thrown at him.
Its works as a microscopically thin layer around his skin acting as a naturally guard. If this layer is broken, i.e. if he receives even a minor cut, the barrier is broken and he can be affected by magic. This does not count for his scars.

Stealth:
Technically not being a magical ability but something of a natural one of science, the Void within Yakob can take over his body once per battle thread and as many times as wanted in a quest thread, and turn him from visible to near-invisible. It literally melds him into the space between things and places, atoms and air, the Void, changing his body from state of physicality to one of between dimensions. Almost a sub-dimension in itself. He can only move at half-speed when in this state and loses his Magical Negation ability, but cannot be seen and hardly heard because of the change of dimension. It allows him to move from place to place undetected by normal means, for a maximum length of three minutes or three posts, whatever comes first.

Immortality:
Yakob cannot die.
Whether it is due to his strange Halfling nature, or his personality, Yakob is immortal. Others of his kind can die of natural causes, but Yakob cannot. For some reason the strength of the Void in his heart has not only allowed him the re-use of his hand, but also for him to never have his heart or brain fail. Yakob hurts and heals like any normal being, but once he loses all his blood his systems will just keep going, running on pure Void energy. In this case he cannot keep walking if the pain is intolerable, and he falls unconcious like any other being, but he will never be able to be killed, drowned, etc.
When he gets to a point where he begins to recover - for instance, regain conciousness - he awakes very weak and only 20% healed. He is also incredibly hungry.

Equipment:

Cravasse: His left iron and brass forearm that contains a miniature iron crossbow with six bolts.
Two sets of refills for his crossbow - six bolts in each.
Two iron knives of half a foot in length each.
A leather pack with a single blanket, changes of tunic and rations to feed him for a month.
Apples.
Basic medical supplies.

Familar: A hard-working pony called Thorn. She is black and sorrel.

History:

Iota-Tau-Iota is his designation. Yakob is his name. Yakob de Void. Yakob of the Void, Yakob devoid of any light.

He was born in the Central Gene Pool of Haven, the Void Elf township. From the outset Yakob was regarded as a misfit, a mistake. His entire batch of spore brothers (and those that regard themselves as sisters) were around two thirds the height of a normal Void Elf, and each seemed to possess an aggression that the Alpha Primes could not control. One elder Void Elf, a Gamma-Eta who went by Foy, was given the unfortunate task of having to look after these recent hatchlings. He treated with them contempt, placing them in a central building for training firstly in basic technology of brass and cog. This went well for half a year, but after this they were moved onto the knife-arts. That which proved to be a mistake.

As it happened, however, the aggression built into this group, who were the smallest ever spores of the Void Elf population, and within learning how to fight their anger proceeded to grow. As soon as Foy attempted to teach them how to use their anger to be better fighters, they turned on each other and began to kill their own siblings mercilessly in their fights.

Amongst these Yakob fought hand and tooth, and quickly rose in those days to become the best knife fighter of the group. However, it was decided by the Alpha Primes that the damage had already been done, and so the spore siblings of Iota-Tau were left in a locked room, and then the room was set on fire. Panic enshewed. Blame was passed around to the remaining fourteen siblings, and they turned on each other as the flames leapt higher. One, two, three were quickly killed, with Yakob taking one life himself. They tried to fight their way out, stabbing each other to be the first to try to door, but it was to no avail. They all burned or suffocated, most falling unconcious before they truly died.

The bodies were placed outside, quickly desposed of. It was found that some of the dead had minor burns whilst others were completely difigured. Among the throwing it was not seen, however, that Yakob still remained warm, even though his heart was not beating. He was abanoned out of the town limits with the rest, left to be fed upon by the devilish animals that roamed in the wild.

He awoke with a terror. Such pain and physical trauma lanced through his system. Yakob sat up and found himself weak, and amongst the dead bodies of his kin. Blinking in the fierce sunlight he found himself unable to hold his posture due to the fact much of his left arm was covered in severe burns. He then fell back down, exhausted, and waited for death to come.

Again.

Yet, of course it didn't. Instead the hellish beasts came. They lunged and spat and roared, and Yakob with no knives left, for of course the bodies had been stripped of anything valuable, fought with only his teeth and nails and head butting. Aggression in built within him he escaped with barely his sanity, his face bleeding profusely, blind in one eye and with the lower half of his left arm missing.

Run. He ran. Fast and true, feeling his body weakening, but also feeling the presence of the Void, pure and strong, within him. He knew he could not return to his people, for they were the ones who had burnt his brethen. He knew he could not stay in the wilds, for they were the places of killer demons and beasts. He had to find sanctuary, somewhere safe, where he could rest and tend to his wounds.

Somehow he kept going. He died twice on the way, but each time his body resurrected itself. His face cleared, and after washing in a river he found he could see again, although blurry. His arm, though still bleeding, began to clear. His hunger was ravenous and it caused him to go havoc and eat an entire family of rabbits raw, but still he kept on. The Void Elves were naught to him anymore. He had only himself to rely on.

Eventually he came to the largest lake in Alerar. There he found a small settlement of Dark Elves and he threw himself on their mercy. Or, rather, he fell at their feet, ground his teeth and offered his learnt skills in exchange for medical assistance. The Dark Elves somewhat joked amongst themselves, but agreed. He was brought to the house of an old Alchemist by the name of Dre'Gar and was there given back full sight once more. His arm, however, could not be saved, so it was cut off at the elbow. Yakob screamed throughout the procedure, and cursed all the Elves around him, and all they did was laugh.

He stayed in the village for nine years. During this time he set himself up as a mender and maker, and constructed his arm that he called Crevasse. Into its depths he placed a crossbow, and he found by making it hollow he could rely on the latent ability of the Void to move it, despite the lack of magical ability there. He deduced that his deaths were strongly connected to the Void, but still could not figure out why. So he studied under Dre'Gar for the next four years and made simple technologies for the people. In this time he built himself a minature armoury of ballistics and simple flint-lock pistols. They were not very well constructed, but they served him well as at the end of the time he marched through the village and killed all the people, including the Alchemist, for the simple sin of laughing at him in the first place.

Yakob then fled north, to the mountains. Now almost ten he felt he knew all that he could from Alerar and decided to go northwards to the mountains. He followed goat tracks, thost that he knew from the Dark Elves, and upon this road he found a small but powerful mountain pony caught in thorns. After thinking about leaving it to die for its own stupidity, he released it, and domesticated it. He called it Thorn for how he had found it (her) and rode her upwards into Salvar.

Salvar was cold and harsh, but Yakob was fierce. He took Thorn up and into the first city he came to, which was Pestavo. Nobody gave him a second look or even laughed, and so the Halfling knew he was somewhere where he could be safe. He hunkered down in a brothel, offering himself as a serving boy, and there he remained for three years until the day his old Void Elf master Foy walked into town. All that was Yakob was released and he captured, tortured, then killed the man, only finding out that his spore group was not the only troupe of Void Halflings after all.

Hey, pretty cool character you got yourself there.

The only issue i see is with Magical Negation. Being able to completely negate magic as a constant aura is too strong, even for uber powerful characters like Sei or Breaker. Complete resistance to a single element is considered a mid range ability. The highest resistance percentage I'd see a passive magic resistance ability would be around 70%.

For a starting character I see it being a period where he can reduce magic attacks. Something like for 3 posts (split as you like) where magic is reduced to 60% effectiveness.

How does that sound?

How about negating magic for levels same and below to 50% affectiveness, and then anyone above that it is 50% negated (as in lost affectiveness) for two posts?

Alright, we'll try that.

Well there is a difference between too powerful on paper and too powerful in practice. I think this will be fine.

You're approved!
