My games just don't stop!

Another little writings thread! Have you guys ever had a story spin out of control? Your character took a turn you never expected? The ending of your thread suddenly came out different than planned? Story stole your pen and wrote itself? Share it!

How did it turn out? Was it so much better than what you originally planned? Or were you scratching your head saying "That wasn't meant to happen..." Share!

While I tend to plot the general trajectory of a thread, I try not to plan much character development and leave enough breathing room for it to grow organically. I put someone in a situation and see how it changes them, or I pair them with others and see what kinds of relationships evolve. In that sort of way, most of my threads have unexpected results! A great example of that is Child of Darkness and the ongoing dynamic between Aure's, Warpath's, and my characters. I really did not expect that depth to come out of an idea for a plot vaguely inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Captain Planet, haha.

Someone (Schultz?) once said something along the lines of "I don't tell my characters what to do, I ask them". I try to keep that in mind whenever I write something, and often they end up leading me more interesting places than I would have planned otherwise.

I once got a Vignette like request for a character in one of my fanfictions. When I did that short story I actually got a new character for my actual fanfiction as well as I found a new point for the main character.

The vignette was "Your character goes to the amusement park with their girl/boyfriend. When the park was about to close your character had to stop to look at one last thing, After your character finished they reach the gate and are locked inside with their girl/boyfriend. What do they do?"

Now my character didn't have a girlfriend at that time and so I created one. However, I didn't expect where it went. Turns out the girlfriend was a snobby rich girl that was forcing him to date her in order to keep one of his family's biggest secrets from leaking out. So I learned that Tyson was a family oriented, submissive person as he shies away from Claire when she gets angry and is trying to keep his family from looking bad in the eyes of the public.

Oh and the secret. His family and the family of maids and butlers are bound by contract. In other words, unless released, all people born into the Mary Family must serve the Fairmore Family.

The time my story went out of hand was my development with Ashla. I originally added the Icebreaker family to add more depth into her character and make her a little more mature...

Instead: She isn't mature, she's a jerk. She's freaking turned emo as well! Evil?? I never meant for her to be evil! She's far from the character I originally made her to be: the classic, young heroine. She's become another Anakin Skywalker! :P I'm just about ready to give up and make her a villain who still has morals...

It was this though that caused me to make Kaida. Kaida is a lot like Ashla used to be, except with a clearly different fighting style and backstory. Now she's my young and aspiring heroine slowly rising up... and this time it's staying that way!

Thanks, Karu. Edited :P

I know she still is growing up, I'm a teen too. Thing is, I don't know where to go with her! Maybe if I let Ashla carry on in this direction I could make an interesting character out of her, at least she isn't the one dimensional, flat character she was when I started with her.

Push her into villainy!

Althanas needs a better class of criminals, and the war on Eiskalt could be a stepping stone for her!

The whole turning into a vampire thing. It started off as an excuse for me to have super strength and speed (in hindsight I probably could have just used his spirit magic for that), turned into a story about a fallen hero and then gave me reason to play an amoral, hedonistic sociopath. I also had at least one alt spawn from the story line.

Sorish himself has also changed from what I originally had planned for him. I had him planned out out be an adventurer. However he then became interested in Althanian Culture so became a scholar. However, the biggest change came when I decided to make Corallia into a country. When this happened I went deep into Coralian History and Culture and discovered that it had a long history of war between the three countries.

Then I thought about my first story I wrote with him. In that story, the first one to post besides myself was a warlord who planned to take over the Coralian Civilizations. So, I decided to make there be a war against him that brought the three countries together into one big one that spans the seas. However, I had to think about who would be the best to do so. The final decision was Sorish as he is considered a King (god) in the Coralian Community since he has walked on land which is closest you can get to the "Kings of Above" which is what they call humans who seem like gods for destroying many of their homes & natural life in mass.

Of course this is a negative view but they think that they had angered the "Kings of Above" for not worshiping them for years. Coralians hoped that if they started to worship them then the "Kings of Above" would stop destroying their home and the rampant disease (pollution) that has killed many. Their prayers were answered when Sorish returned with the Sea Tree, a plant that absorbs the pollution and is poisonous to eat. It only lives in polluted areas however so the Coralians were fine with it.

Talen started out as a 20yo vagrant.

Some say he's regressed, I say he's become more compact. The whole thing of him being made of the shadows he controls was in order to explain some abilities, then it spiralled out of control till he is now a walking shadow.
