"Why are you here?" Came the unexpected question.
Elthas blinked as snow drifted from the southwest. In the short few months that he's lived in Tyranta, Elthas had grown to admire the people of Eiskalt. For all their frailties and all their strengths, it was a call for unity and a plea for help that lead Elthas there to work. He wanted to seek out open trade with Eiskalt, and befriend it's people. Furthermore, he wanted to to establish a name for himself in Eiskalt as an honest worker, a man of the people. No. A HERO of the people. Snow drifted carelessly as he observed the woman before him.
"To honor the old alliances." Elthas had a philosophy, a way of life. A code he lived by. He wore his typical fedora hat, this one was well weathered and tilted at a forty five degree angle. The brim partially hid his face. His eyes were sharp and observant as ever however. Elthas had aged significantly since the events of Forral's Fortress. He didn't know if it was age catching up with him, or if it was a side effect of contact with the fortress. He would never know which was the case. Gone was his green hair, replaced with a beautiful snowy crown of platinum blond hair. His face had become a little rough around the edged, but still retained much of the Elven angular features. He also wore a grey beard those days too. With a calm expression on his face he looked at the woman who represented the gathered crowd. They were workers, all there for the same reason as he. Looking for work, but Elthas had one advantage they didn't have. He was LEADER of The Trading Company, and a long-time senior member of The Red Six. With his eyes narrowed he cracked his gloved knuckles. Elthas was always a sharp dresser, and he dressed for good looks, as well as functionality. They were close to Salvar, but technically still part of the unexplored regions of Althanas. Elthas had made the trip to Eiskalt to get to know Ashla Icebreaker's home land, and attempt to make a peace with her. He didn't hold a grudge per se, but he didn't completely trust her. The first time they'd met in that specific tournament, Ashla had slain Elthas in cold blood. Elthas didn't take that loss well at all. "And it's the right thing to do. People here need help, and I have the capacity to engineer jobs." All over Eiskalt there were wars, rebellions, and large pockets of crime. The common man and woman needed help and so Elthas was present. Elthas had not yet met Ashla Icebreaker since his time in Eiskalt started.
He'd worked odd jobs at first, gaining the trust of the locals.
It was only at THAT point that he'd revealed himself as the leader of The Trading Company. It was only at THAT point that he could begin the good work of repairing a war-torn country. A country at war with itself. It was a thankless job, a HERO's job. Elthas looked with his sharp blue eyes, they seemed to have an eerie glow about them. He cracked his knuckles. Then stretched, there was always work in Eiskalt and someone needed to take charge. Elthas had become a wise old man somehow. And he was working on taking the mantle of leadership where he deserved to be such. He had not yet heard word from Ashla Icebreaker, and suspected she was nowhere in the city itself to begin with. There was a country that needed repair. He looked at the woman and workers before him.
"Everyone." Elthas said calmly. "I am here to help you all out. Where there is something broken, we will fix it. Where there is a broken home, we will repair it. Where there is crime, we will absolve it. Where there is rebellion, we will calm the hearts of the restless."
"Who are you to tell us what to do!?" Came the expected response.
Elthas was a revolutionary, a modern day thinker. Everywhere he went, he enabled change no matter the circumstances. It was who he was, it was what he did. In those days, he strove for a peaceful co-existence between Man and Elf kind. That vision lead him to shape The Trading Company to what it was that day. Elthas smiled and looked at the gathered thoughtfully. "It is true that I am not native to this land." Elthas said. "But I have come here and honoured the old alliances. I have embraced your ways as if they were my own." Elthas continued. "Where people need help, The Trading Company will always be there on the front lines."
"You can offer us work, how can this be?" Another asked.
"Look around you. Everywhere there is a job to be had, everywhere there is labor that needs doing. Everywhere there is a broken infrastructure that needs repair." A sharp wind came in from the west this time. Then settled down briefly. Snow drifted across Elthas's heavy boots. "I am here representing The Trading Company, but I am also here representing the will of you all." Elthas motioned extravagantly. "Foreman Rickards." A gentleman stepped forward. "Is the matter we discussed completed?" Elthas asked of the other well dressed Eiskaltian.
"Aye. Everything you said checked out. We got the shipment of gold this morning." The foreman then looked at the gathered crowd. "Everyone. Listen to me. Elthas Belthasar speaks the truth. He CAN help rebuild Eiksalt one job at a time. One worker at a time, until there are thousands of us."
"What's that in your hand Foreman?" One of the gathered asked.
"Yeah we wanna know what's the big secret." Another said.
"Oh this?" The foreman responded with the parcel in his hand. "I have just secured a treaty a between The Trading Company and Eiskalt's Mining Guild. I am certain there is more in the works. Elthas will continue to provide the tactical support we need to repair Eiskalt, in exchange for the rights to work with you all, and employ you all. I will continue to be your foreman in the mines."
Elthas nodded in agreement. "All right, we can start by reopening the mines, and getting productivity back up from the mines. From there, we can reopen the forge, man the lumbermills, and progressively spread outward. It will take time, but you all have the full support of The Trading Company and myself." Elthas knew that the mines were located some distance away from the city itself. But workers would be happy to get back to work a proper job.
And with that a new future would dawn.
Elthas began to make his way towards the gathered folks to start the day's work. The solution to such horrible times would require a lot of hard work...and work was right up Elthas's alley. The brutal kind, the physical labor, the make you sweat, back breaking kind. That's what drove Elthas, that was at the core of WHO HE WAS as a man. The foreman walked towards Elthas and the two spoke as they made their ways to the Eiskaltian mines. There was work that needed doing...always...work... And he would take his group of gathered allies, and forge good and decent workers out of them. It would take about a few day's ride to get to the closest mines to begin work and clear them out of any potential hazards that would likely be present.
