History: I remember the glorious and intoxicating feel of Raiaera like it was yesterday. The busy streets filled with bustling sounds of people roaming the shops, and children's laughter whisking along the air. The soaring buildings that glistened in the summer's light, so intricate in details, that one would almost question the reality of it all.
But those days are long since dead.
When the plague of corpses rose and filled our lands with chaos, everything changed. The smell of decaying flesh still clings to my nostrils like a memory forever burned into the depths of my very soul. Watching the cities dancing with fire and smoke, and the screams of the children in streets as they watch their whole lives wretched from their very beings.
I was one of those children watching my family, nay my soul, ripped from my very existence. Hiding in the mass disarray of bodies, covered in my families own corpses, did I survive. I sat, covered in waves of blood and the stench of burning flesh as the world around me became a monstrosity that I had always feared.
As the screams died down did I brave enough to reveal myself and wander the ruins of the once great city Eluriand. I soon fell upon a young girl and her family who had been spared the terrifying sight that I had borne witness too. They were a family of the esteemed Bard council and were able to find shelter from the war.
Among them was Amra, the eldest daughter of the Kaethar family. Speckled blonde and silver hair danced around her silhouette, eyes so bright with life and fire it was if they held a whole world inside of them. I was envious of her ability to see the brighter sides of the sky, while I was drowning in the memory of the life I once had. As the years past and the corpse war ended, the Kaethar family started to break the cloud of misery that I buried myself in. I began to laugh again. Oh, what a feeling it was to know joy again! Amra knew exactly how to make me smile, and what I needed to start to see the light and heal the wounds.
Being part of the family with ties to the Bard council came with certain perks and opportunities that allowed me to hone my skills. When I turned of age, I was able to join the profound Tel Megilindir. There I was taught the bow and skills I needed to survive and fight for the Elven cause. The feeling of the curved, wooden armament in my hands was like nothing ever felt before. And I was good with it, real good. I would practice hours on end while Amra cheered me on. I was taught simple daggers tactics should my enemy close in on me and the effects of various poisons to snare my foe. I was taught various magic, but I fell in love with the Arcane aspect of the magic art and it has stuck with me ever since. I rose in the ranks of the Tel Meglilindir as my skills grew and I faced new foes daily. For the first time in a century, I was truly happy.
Yet, all good things come to an end as I have come to know…
I had woken with a stir on this ominous morning, sweat plastered on my face. Air escaping my lungs in a fleeting pace and the world was a stupor on this foggy morning in the city of New Aurient. The sun had starting to flash its ginger and yellow rays on my face and the air had a sting of chill on it this morning. I had opened the window to reclaim the air that was parting my lungs. Feeling the salty breeze on my face was a warm welcome and one I cherish every day. It was one of the few things that would calm my nightmares of ghouls and blood. As I was enjoying the life that flowed around me, I heard a commotion in the courtyard below me. It was Amra and her parents seeming to be in a troubled state with Elyon Iolrath. Their family was once a member of the Bard council, but have come under suspicion in their involvement of Xem’Zund and his invasion. My foster family was providing evidence in their downfall and was due to present their evidence in the next council meeting.
I grabbed my dagger and threw on some basic clothes and made my way down to the courtyard. As I was approaching the scene in front of me, everything seemed to slow to grim halt. Elyon saw me running down the ceramic stone steps towards them with the dagger drawn. He unsheathed his beast made of iron and stained with the blood of this fellow Elves. He reached out to grasp the wrist of Amra and yanked her to his side, blade drawn to her soft, porcelain neck.
“Come any closer Lilith and I was drain her life force before your dagger pierces my heart.” Eylon snarled. I stopped, frozen 5 feet from her and slowly placed my dagger at my feet. Amra’s parents stood in dread as their daughter was inches from them, paralyzed by the iron blade that chained her to her place.
“Eylon, there is no need for senseless violence. Why not let Amra go and we can talk about this with no blades drawn?” I urged. My heart began pulsing in rapid succession, fear gripping the edges of my lungs as I saw my family within death’s clutches.
“You know I can’t do that Lilith! Your family is spreading false libel around the council, distributing seeds of deceit and are planning to overthrown our right to power! The only way to stop these lies is to snuff out the source!” Eylon said.
Amra’s mother began to wail with the words that escaped out of Eylon’s voice. Amra’s face began to drip tears of fear as she understood the true reason for the visit today.
“Eylon, killing them would only bring your family more dishonor! We can go now, to the council, and clear your name!” I pressed. “ But I need you to let go of Amra and we can go peacefully. I give you my word.”
Upon hearing my desperate cry for him to release Amra, his face distorted into a malicious grin that sent waves of ice throughout my being. The grin of a violent man, with nothing to lose. “ You know what Lilith, I have a better idea” he snarled. He removed the sword from Amra delicate throat and plunged it into her father's chest with a distinct sound of iron cutting into flesh. Blood poured out of him like a dam bursting open, spilling its contents all around the plains. He fell to his knees, clutching his chest and the thick, hot red life force escaped his chest.
I couldn't move, couldn't breathe. The ice of fear flowed to my legs, arms, chest and froze me to the ground. Despair began running rapid throughout my veins, incapacitating me. My thoughts were racing as the second sword thrust made its way into her mother's gut. He continued to push it in, more and more into her as blood rained down onto us all. She was screaming, just screaming as the life was being pulled out from under her. Amra was cowering over her loved ones, drenched in red and sorrow. Elyon continued to puncture them with his sword until everything was..silent. I felt myself crumblde to the ground before on my knees, wet with tears and blood as I watched my saviors die. I slowly pulled my head up and stared Elyon into his endless pool of black, dead eyes. There was that smirk on his face, almost like a maniacal sociopath that relished in the gutting of innocents.
“Why?” I managed to mumble out.
“Why you ask?” a hysterical laugh emerged from his belly. “ My dear, with them dead, who can prove my guilt? I can reclaim my title and provide evidence that your family was the menace all along! I simply found out and sought out justice when they attacked me! Brilliant, no?” he exclaimed. He was drooling with hysteria at his masterpiece. He grabbed Amra by her hair and yanked her up to her feet. Her screams echoed throughout my bones and he thrust his tongue deep into her throat. “And Amra will make a lovely bride won’t she?”
“I will NEVER be yours, you..you…monster!” Amra shouted.
“I beg to differ my dear. Unless you wish to suffer the same fate as your family? I can easily arrange that. Or perhaps leave you to the council to decide your fate for treason?” Eylon said, with a malicious tone.
“If you spare Lilith, I…will stay with you.” Amra whispered.
“NO, Amra! He will betray you! Look what he did to your family! He took everything away, I can’t let you do this!” I wailed. The bellowing sound of my cries seem to have fallen on deaf ears. For as I shouted them, the Tel Megilindir descended upon us. The flashes of ornate green vest and the gleam of swords danced around the courtyard as they approached. I felt relief for a brief moment, the military would see reason for I was one of them.
“Good work Eylon, you dealt with the traitors.” Captain Vartan praised. I looked up at my Captain with desperation in my eyes, screaming for him to see the truth of today’s events. He peered down at me with slits in his eyes and his fist came crashing into my gut. Air escaped my lungs with a whoosh sound and I tumbled to the ground, clutching my stomach. This made no sense! What was happening? Why is Captain siding with this traitor?
“ Delivered as promised. Granted, I may need to keep this one alive,” he stated, licking all the way up Amra’s neck. She grimaced in disgust he continued to fondle her with his blood stained hands. Once he was satisfied, he pointed to me, “This one tried to protect the traitor, I feel we should punish appropriately.” He said as he flashed the malicious grin.
“She will be banished. We have no use for traitors here, and she is not directly related to the family so we cannot know for sure her involvement.” Vartan said. “Take her to the Red Forest and leave her to find her own means out. Should she be able to escape, she can keep her life.” Before I could protest, I was grasped by four rangers and flung to the ground. Feet snarled their way around me as they were brought down all around my body. “Make sure she can still walk” Captain Vartan asserted as he walked away. I looked up only to see Amra being dragged away to the depths of what I can assume will be her eternal hell, her wails enveloping my very core. The pain began to escalate all around as the feet continued to pound into my slim frame, eventually the darkness crept into my eyes as I drifted off into obscurity filled nightmares of dread and blood.
I awoke sometime later to find myself alone, stained with the blood of the family that has shown me true kindness. My body throbbing with a pulsating tension, and the moon's light shining onto the lush Red Forest. The Forest that is home to fearful beasts that would devour my corpse if I am not careful. I looked around and the gripping realization took a hold me, dropping me to my knees once again. The family that showed my love and took me into their home in my greatest time of need, is gone. Betrayed by the homeland they fought so hard to protect. I felt my blood pulsating through my veins, the air shrinking in my lungs as the thought took a hold of me and I realized my fate and Amra..I began to shake and flail as the tears as the loss pulsed through me. Amra’s face come through the darkness that began to descend on me and it woke me from my despair. She is suffering worse than I, and I will do everything to free her. It took all my strength to move my slight frame upon my knees and onto my feet. I looked around to see where I was and noticed my pack a few feet away. They had at least left me my dagger and bow, Gee how thoughtful. I grabbed up my materials and took one last look at my home. I will return, and when I do I will bring Death and Vengeance with me. Amra will be safe again, and I will do whatever means necessary to free her from her prison. I must help her and reveal the traitors upon my people. Her family saved me in my darkest hour and it is my turn to repay the favor. I will not stop until she is safe and freed with the beast who spilled her family's blood. I must leave Raiaera, my home, in order to save the one true family I have left. As I look forward at the new danger that present’s myself, I can think over only one thing..
I will prevail.
May the Gods be ever in my favor.
