Name: Edgar Pence
Age: 27
Race: Human
Height: 5'11''
Weight: 164 lbs.
Occupation: Thief and Fisherman
Left-Handed
Personality: Growing up in an impoverished fishing village, Edgar learned early on the importance and value in knowing the anatomy of a lie. The best, most convincing lies he found were the ones he was truly able to believe. In his youth, Edgar learned to survive among the poor through sleight of hand and deception. In the value of deception, he also learned the importance of never being caught. This key lesson would often be the difference between going to sleep with a full belly or waking up the next morning to go to the shore and fish for his next meal while hungry. You never catch anything while hungry, he often says. Edgar has learned in this world that those who survive prey upon others. Leave virtues, values and character to people who claim to be better men because Edgar has often seen what becomes of these men of honor-- they are either dead or someone else's victim. Survival is ugly and savage and even in poverty Edgar carries with him a grudge against those who are able to live in comfort and are of plenty. Edgar can be considered charming and charismatic to those who meet him. He has a gift for gab and the mask he wears to his unsuspecting victims often betrays nothing. He takes whatever he wants, uses them for whatever ends and eventually things run their due course. Those who remain in their ignorance of his darker nature are far more safe then those who learn of the monster he truly is. Once exposed, Edgar will do absolutely whatever it takes to ruin that person's reputation, take whatever they have and even kill them to protect his identity.
In reality, Edgar presents a false self to the rest of the world in order to distract himself from who he truly is and the self-loathing and hatred that comes with it. He is friendly as he leads you down the path of good intentions and robs you blind and discards you when he no longer has use for you. He trusts absolutely nobody save members of his own family after harsh lessons he has learned about the true value of loyalty. Edgar is depraved in what he does in seeking pleasure. He will often humiliate and abuse his lovers or friends in order to feel better about himself. He is keenly aware of how different he is from you or I and will do anything he can to keep us in the dark. Edgar will do whatever it takes to get what he wants and will remove any obstacle in his path, including you, to get it. Those who choose to work with or befriend him do so at their own peril, for the monsters we often espouse to be on the look out for, Edgar is one of them and is truly out to get you. For if it is one thing he knows, it is that this world is never in shortage of fools to be taken advantage of in order to get ahead.
Appearance: At first glance, Edgar looks like a man of wiry build and who has lived a very hard life with numerous scars and bronzed skin that show that he has lived a life as a fisherman. His square face will smile and his bright green eyes will regard you as somebody familiar and trustworthy. As he charms you with guile and charisma, his appearance seems to take on a certain light. He has a wreath of blonde hair that looks like gold wheat that is able to catch the sunlight just right, and everything about him seems to be good and wholesome, as if he is a long lost friend. In making your mistake in trusting him and becoming his next unwitting victim, you see that is typically dressed threadbare for he has never been able to afford anything more than that. As he rises in influence, power and wealth, he naturally will dress according to the station if only to seem more convincing. Edgar carries a long knife on his hip that he typically uses for flensing and has another dagger he keeps upon his person that changes places depending upon his mood and whether he is about to attack somebody.
Skills:
Psychopath: Edgar is a living, breathing psychopath and knows full well that he is different from normal, healthy people. Given his mental state, Edgar perpetuates a false self to lure others who are ignorant of his true nature to do his bidding. He is incapable of true empathy, intimacy, trust, and love, and will often use those in personal relationships in vain attempts to feel something like these things. Edgar lies, manipulates and does whatever is necessary to get what he wants. People who are taken advantage of by him are considered be resources. Whether he preys upon them emotionally or physically, those who are ignorant of his true intentions are usually safe. If exposed by someone else, Edgar will go out of his way in order to silence, ruin or murder the other person in order to protect his secrets. For when dealing with Edgar one thing that runs true is that it isn't what you know about him that is dangerous, its what you don't know and what he is willing to do in order to protect those secrets.
In reality, Edgar depends on others to sustain himself emotionally and replenish his decaying mental state. He needs others to survive, even if he is loathe to admit it. He can be considered charming and charismatic because he intuitively is able to understand what other people want or need and begins to tailor his personality to that person in order to gain their trust. This mask never really lasts for long, but it will last long enough for him to get what he wants from you. At this point his psychopathy has not devolved to the point to him becoming deranged at this point in time.
Liar, Liar: Edgar is a gifted liar and one that is especially convincing because he believes whatever it is he tells you. The use of deception is second nature to him and he will often use it intuitively to gain power of or control over others. Because his false self depends on lies in order to sustain himself, he will never believe what the truth actually is if you confront him with it. In fact, he will deny whatever it is and most likely blame you for whatever transgression you are attempting to make him culpable of. This devolves into Edgar attempting to reassert his power over you with more lies and denials of the truth until you begin to question your own sanity and soon forget whatever it was you were attempting and blame yourself for the problem.
Conspire: Given his mental state, Edgar is a very skilled manipulator. He sees people as objects or pawns in whatever game he is playing and will attack and prod them emotionally to get them to do whatever he wants. He gains a thrill and excitement in watching others play into his hands and do his bidding. This causes him to take bigger risks and ultimately like others who share his evil nature, eventually bite off more they can chew and are either caught or meet bad ends. This is why it is often vital for Edgar to protect himself from being exposed and will never under any circumstances admit to manipulating anyone. Being forced to face the truth will often cause Edgar to become embarrassed, angry and vindictive. When dealing with Edgar, even if you are to run into him by "chance", chances are that he has plans for you.
Fisherman: Raised to help his family survive off of the sea's bounty, Edgar is a master fisherman. He knows all sorts of lures, baits and tricks to catch whatever fish he is seeking. Edgar will often fish when he has nothing to do purely for the sport of it, using the time to weigh his options and plot his next move.
Professional Thief: Edgar learned at an early age the practicality of thievery, practicing the art of it in his village by cutting purses, picking locks and stealing whatever isn't bolted to the ground. He knows many tricks of the trade and has acquired enough experience and connections in the criminal underworld to work with other thieves and plot a heist. At this moment, Edgar is an adept thief.
Abilities:
Playing Judas: As a psychopath, Edgar enters a thread with twelve points to his emotional pool. The maximum number of points to his pool is currently 12. This emotional pool acts as his source of mental stability. Every post in a thread causes him to lose one emotional point. The only way to replenish the pool is for Edgar to betray, lie or deceive others and do so successfully. For every lie Edgar is able to successfully tell, he gains 1 point. For every act of betrayal he is able to commit successfully, he gains 4 points to his pool. If he is able to successfully deceive somebody into doing something for him by manipulating them, he regains all points to his pool. As the thread progresses, it is in Edgar's interest for survival to replenish the pool continuously to keep his mental state from deteriorating. If someone is able to successfully ferret out a lie and hold Edgar to the truth, he loses 2 points. If he is ever exposed in a betrayal, he loses half of his points. If he is ever exposed for manipulating or deceiving somebody without successfully carrying that plan out, he loses all but 2 points in his pool.
If Edgar's emotional pool ever reaches 0 during a thread he will become deranged, losing what little sanity he has and is unable to control himself. He becomes violent, hallucinates and begins to actively prey on anyone else in the thread which greatly risks him to being exposed. The only way to regain his sanity and emotional wellbeing is either to lose consciousness or to somehow replenish his pool using the methods above.
This game will always be played in every thread, and Edgar's current pool number and the calculations will be posted as a footnote on every post. Other players on Althanas can feel free to actively engage with me in this game in the future for some pretty interesting threads.
Stages of mental state given points in pool:
12 points - Normal and no deteriorating change.
11 points - His victims begin to suspect something is amiss with Edgar.
10 points - Edgar begins to lose his temper infrequently.
9 points - Edgar becomes paranoid and begins to lie more frequently and obviously to restore his dominance.
8 points - Edgar has a harder time wearing an emotional mask out of growing fear of exposure.
7 points - Edgar begins to abuse or harass others indiscriminately in order to feel better about himself.
6 points - Others sense something is deeply wrong with Edgar and are unable to be actively deceived by him while at this stage.
5 points - Edgar loses his sense of calm and while irritated will lash out at anybody.
4 points - Edgar begins to hallucinate and it becomes harder for him to discern what is real from what isn't.
3 points - Edgar becomes sexually aroused and feels an immediate need to satisfy the urge.
2 points - Edgar loses control of all of his victims in the immediate area.
1 point - Edgar begins to froth at the mouth and speak in tongues as he becomes more and more delirious.
0 point - Edgar becomes deranged - He loses his sanity and sense of self. He becomes violent and will actively prey on others in his immediate area in a vain effort to restore his sense of power and self. Risk of being exposed is very high at this level.
Pre-Meditated: When he is about to attack somebody, Edgar will actively plot the best course of action before he strikes. If he is able to successfully carry this attack out against somebody else, he gains bloodlust which makes him 1.5x faster and stronger than a normal human being for the next post. Edgar must retain the element of surprise prior to execution in order to take advantage of this ability.
Equipment/Weapons:
Long Knife: A long, curved knife of nine inches made of flat iron that Edgar typically uses to flense his game. He regularly keeps it sharp and oiled. The hilt is bound by brown, boiled leather. He is fond of calling the knife Ruth. Nobody knows why.
Dagger: Made of iron and kept sharp, Edgar hides this weapon on his person in places he thinks others are unable to find. He changes its place on his person regularly.
Set of lockpicks: Well oiled iron lockpicks and have seen frequent use.
Fishing pole and tackle set: Edgar usually always has his pole with him and his fishing equipment elsewhere on his person, often in his bags.
