History
His earliest time of Althanas consisted on ragtag thievery on Salvar, but Tobias' wayward and humble beginnings were not to last. Through trials and tribulations involving necromantic sorcery and the deaths of three comrades, Tobias found himself faced with an entourage of Ethereal Sway priests. Sent to the gallows for crime of using sinister magicks, Tobias believed his adventures away from home were at their end.
When the Alerian military came and conscripted him, Tobias found a new path. Trained in the art of strategy and swordsmanship, Tobias quickly caught the attention of dark forces in Alerar. Lye, Master of the Crimson Hand, sought to use Alerar- and Stalt himself- as a tool to conquer the nation of Eiskalt.
During the campaign, Tobias became aware of subtle strings behind the curtain, and he relieved himself of command. When he tried to escape Eiskalt with the few people who believed him, Lye followed and swiftly dealt with all of the other dissenters, which included Tobias' love interest Camille. Enraged, Tobias managed to wound Lye, but ended up in critcal condition himself.
With his name dragged through dirt and marked for death by the Crimson Hand, Tobias fled Althanas for his homeland Keribas. Unaware that the Hand had agents across the sea, Tobias fought for his life and watched many innocent, uninvolved men die, and he became paranoid. For a time, running remained convenient, until Tobias refused to shoulder any more needless death.
Upon his return to Salvar, Tobias met with Madison Freebird, who told him of how they deposed Lye and revoked the deathmark on him in hopes of making Tobias an ally. At first, Tobias sought to take a higher road. The Crimson Hand held no reservations about murder as an answer. Tobias wanted to take a more pragmatic route.
He sailed for Raiaera, where he joined with a Mercenary group intent on retaking the Elven Capital of Eluriand. Countless hordes of undead and the noxious plagues of Xem'Zund echoed over the land. Tobias quickly took to the Mercenary life, but inadvertantly became just as interested in coin as he was in honor.
While entrenched outside Eluriand, a strange woman named Leona Stevvains approached Tobias with an extended contract helping her to train different members of her newly formed group for difficult tasks, as well as helping them to find and retrieve various items of intruige.
Over time, he became fast friends with a girl named Alyssa, one of the group's most devout members. While he held few delusions about the group and their fascination with magic, Alyssa seemed innocent and kind, and Tobias stayed close to her in order to preserve the goodness in her- a quality he had found extremely rare in people.
In time, Madison Freebird called on Tobias once more- this time with a mission that changed his life. Tobias left Alyssa with many reservations and infiltrated the Church of the Ethereal Sway. A year passed, and Tobias grew quiet. The playboy in him all but died, his penchant for cursing and vitriol faded, replaced with somber silence. Scars littered his body and his eyes drained of their brightness. When he returned to Raiaera, it was meant to be the last time.
Leona paid him to help in their efforts to rid the Red Forest of Podë, and he complied. Not a word was spoken of his intention to leave them behind. After the dust settled, though, and Alyssa was left all but wounded, a grizzled, battered, and bloody Stalt stands on the precipice to deliver his sad news.
Tobias came to understand the true danger of Magic in Salvar, and he seeks a means to ensure mankind will never abuse it again.
Personality
Stoic and reserved, Tobias moves with purpose in everything he does. Many of his communications are nonverbal, as he is abrasive and short with most people. He has the capacity for kindness and a softness of heart for old friends, but his experiences have made it difficult for him to express himself even to those he knows best. His persona stresses the hard truth: "I'm not a hero."
Skills
Swordsman of Legend: Through his journey, Tobias has mastered the art of the sword. Peerless in the art of blades, it takes more than pure swordplay to best him.
Walking Armory: Tobias is the owner of many different weapons, and he has trained extensively with all of them. Due to this rigorous training and his familiarity with them, they do not encumber his movements. They still add weight to his load, but he is numb to the addition.
Seasoned Veteran: He's seen it all. Honorable battle and hapless slaughter. Tobias is hardened and jaded, and hardly anything can faze him. Things that do upset him envoke a deep, powerful, and slow burning rage that is not easily quelled.
Honor, but not the way you're accustomed to: Tobias' moral code is lax compared to what it once was. The world is a sick and horrific place smattered with precious few truly good people. While he seeks the best for the people of Althanas, Tobias knows that well-intended people do bad things for good reasons. He will help people who need it, but he will not necessarily hurry to stop a wicked act.
Abilities
Dauntless: Tobias has transcended pain. Through flame and whip, knife and nail, his body has been punished beyond breaking. Each time, the broken man stood once more. Tobias can continue to fight even with normally incapacitating wounds. Broken bones will slow him, but not stop. He will endure through the loss of limbs or critical wounds until his body is unable to function.
Unmake: Trained in the secret arts of the Order of the All-Seeing Eye, Tobias has learned to break down magic spells with his own mana. This powerful fluctation of magic power breaks down and scatters a spell to the winds. This can be used six times per day.
Lightning Reflexes: Tobias can move at breakneck speeds on a whim; though his running speed is nothing special, his reaction time is incredible. Quicker than most men blink, he can move faster than a "shot from the hip". (Can't dodge a bullet, but is incredibly hard to aim at if he knows he's being fired on) At close range, his hands can move faster than the eye can follow. He can stab with a blade 10 times in the time it takes most men to do so once.
Hatemark: Once Tobias verbally marks a target, he can "feel" them with a sixth sense. This perception supercedes stealth and mystical wards. He can cancel the mark at any time with a thought. In combat with a marked target, Tobias moves with brutal efficiency. He gains strength equal to that used against him.
Terror: Once he has marked an enemy with his Hatemark, Tobias can actively "infect" them with his Mana. By flooding the marked target with his essence, Tobias can shatter an enemy's resolve and force them into a state of primal fear. This makes it nearly impossible for them to concentrate, though it does not inhibit their movements. This effect lasts for 3 posts or 7 minutes. (Usable 3 times/thread)
Scour: With a subtle incursion of his power, Tobias afflicts a sickness on his foe that remains dormant until they channel magic. This "trap" causes what begins as a "mild ailment." As the target begins to draw on magic power, it erupts into a crippling fit of vomiting and shivers. If the target continues to use magic, the condition can progress into plaguelike symptoms and ultimately organ failure. (Usable once per thread, lasts 3 posts)
Stillness: Forcefully unloading energies onto a foe, Tobias can cause their body to atrophy, which makes their movements become labored and difficult. Their movement speed and reaction time are halved while in the effective range of ten feet while he is maintaining this power. (Lasts for 3 posts or 7 minutes, usable 2 times/thread)
Slayer: Tobias' strikes are honed over years of training and combat. His brutal finesse makes armor less effective against his blows. His strikes (of moderate strength) with a blade pierce Delyn grade metal and less (if they strike head on), and blows he deals cause "wounding," which causes the to take twice as long to heal.
Black Walker's Arts
Over the course of his journey across the world, Tobias has seen and learned many things. From survival to swords, the greatest of these number among the skills he poured effort into mastering.
連続剣 (Renzokuken- "Continual Sword"): Tobias unleashes a flurry of seven sword strikes in rapid succession. The speed of these blows allows them to rip through dense materials (limited to the tier designated by "Slayer") like paper. The resulting damage is incurred so quickly that the target's body does not register the pain for up to a minute (one post) due to shock. This ability can be used 4 times per thread.
