This will be my on going place for all my silly questions... other words can be inserted for silly. Some of these will be content related, some of them will be code related. My first three questions are as follows:

1. as far as fonts, what kinds does the BB code here support? Different sites vary on this.
2. What guidelines are there for Wiki submission?
3 I hear a link that says judgement, but don't hear the related hooks and line seqences that comes with a link, does this link still function?
4. Is it possible to run quests that don't involve one's character?
Thanks for your time..

As far as code goes I'll try to lead a quote here with all of the tags and such...hopefully this works. Im going to replace brackets with parenthesis, so if you get confused I apologize.

(B)(/B) For bold text
(I)(/I) For italics
(U)(/U) For underlining
(LEFT)(/LEFT) for align left
(CENTER)(/CENTER) align center
(RIGHT)(/RIGHT) align right
(QUOTE)(/QUOTE) For quoting something
(CODE)(/CODE) Is to wrap another code box around something... No clue what it does.

Again replace the parenthesis with brackets so it would be [ B ] [/ B] (spaces to make more...verbal sense maybe? If you use Skype feel free to add me (Thefollisbros) and I can walk you through it

2. Wiki submissions just need to be as thourough as you care to be. Later down the road we will be implementing a "Canon submission" program which will allow you to make your wiki entries part of actual canon and will be tagged as such. We will have some form of minor rewards for this as well, so you might want to get cracking.

In short, whatever you feel like creating and sharing for others to use!

3. Im assuming that you're looking at the "Submit for judgement link that shows up at the bottom of each post. The link leads directly to this page http://www.althanas.com/world/misc.php?do=form&fid=1

This is where you go to submit a finished thread for a judge to well...judge it. It will prompt you to fill in some info on the thread such as it's name, a link, and what type of judgment you would like. In the future when the time comes and you're having difficulty feel free to ask a staff member for assistance. If your program has a hard time helping you navigate to the link simply send me a private message and I'll assist you with the form!

4. It's a tad bizarre, I think I may have seen one or two such threads before, but most of the time we try to keep to our own characters. I doubt there is a rule saying you absolutely HAVE to use your own character, and if it helps make a more compelling story or tell an important side story feel free to! This site is about having fun with your writing, whether you character is a sentient tank, an aspiring pizza chef, or a man who kills bad guys with wrestling moves! It's your story!

If you have any more questions, or if my answers confused you, please let me know so I can make your experience on this site a more enjoyable one!

That helped, to a certain extent, although the code answer wasn't what I had in mind, perhaps I was unclear. I probably was unclear. No, I know I was unclear. So... I shall test.

I think Drum is talking about fonts, as in typefaces.

If that's it then what we have can be found under Font in the bar at the top of the text box. It is a drop down menu kind of thing.

Also, The main place to go for non character threads would be The Nexus in The Outlands

Arial, Arial Black, Arial Narrow, Book Antiqua, Century Gothic, Comic Sans MS, and Courier New are the options.

I thank you all for your responses, and especially Alydia, for her conciseness.

Also, the Nexus is specifically for non-Althanas stories. I've seen several threads that did not star the character on the account that wrote them, and so long as you're not writing in a Battle with another character or trying to write someone else's character, it should be fine.

Just so you know, it's very rare to use the non-standard font here. It generally doesn't look very good. I'm sure there's some style things you can do with it, but it's better to be consistent. It's a bit jarring to see different font, only do it if you're being experimental or practicing some sort of style.

Drumheller
05-30-15, 01:14 PM
How about colors then, is it equally as jarring?

Rayse Valentino

Colors are okay sparingly, but people use various forum themes and some of them make colors annoying to read. I wouldn't worry about that though. As long as your entire posts aren't in a different color, they're okay to use for special reasons.

For example, I sometimes use small white text to denote a significant time change. Caden Law used it to illustrate his "wizard voice". Although I think him doing that looked a little weird, since all his characters had different-colored wizard voices and I couldn't take them seriously...

As a general heads up there is some kind of hook script error between JAWS and Chat. I am not sure how it happened, or exactly how to fix it at the moment. so until I do, no Chatting for me. For those that were in Chat early this morning, around 2:00AM eastern standard time U.S. I apologize if any strange messages appeared during this problem.

Where exactly is Hydia? The wiki doesn't give it an exact geographical locale in reference to other places. So, since I can't use any of the maps, I have no idea where it is located in reference to any other nation. Thanks.

Haide/the Tular Plains are to the south and west of Alerar.

This probably won't help you out too much, Drum, but I'll post it here to tease everyone else.

I've just got a minute, but what's the silver to gold economy here?
In D&D it was ten for one, but other gaming systems, and other stories have different formulas, so I ask.

As always I thank you for your time.

Philomel

I think it is ten to one.
As far as I know one gold is the price of a good stout beer, at least that is what I think of.

Hysteria
06-15-15, 05:08 PM
There is no official conversion rate. You can write it how you choose in your stories. Gold is actually mostly an out of character currency. Some poor characters might amass a large amount of gold, while others might be rich but have been around long enough to gather much.

Drumheller
06-15-15, 06:29 PM
Thank you both.

My question was more related to in-world currency, as apposed to the meta-currency given out by judges.

Hysteria
06-16-15, 03:00 AM
That is sort of what I was getting at with the first part of my response. There is no fixed rate that I'm aware off. It might even be worth thinking of the area your character finds him or herself and try and adjust accordingly.

I know, for example, that in ancient Egypt gold was more common that silver by a fair margin. You could trade huge amounts of gold for only a small amount of silver. If we extrapolate that to Althanas you might find Fallien (as the closest thing to Egypt we have,) has a much more even transfer of silver to gold than say Corone. Likewise Alerar might view gold as less or more valuable due to the huge dwarven mines. Perhaps mithril might be considered valuable and gold a mere trinket relatively.

I agree with the second part of your post. There is a big difference between the meta-currency value and how our characters would view gold.

Drumheller
06-16-15, 07:02 AM
Well my initial thoughts were that given the way northern Salvar is described, I was thinking of having the silver to gold ratio somewhat close, given the high probability of untapped vains of both precious metals, but that unlike Mongolia gold would have the slightly higher value.

For anybody who was having a hard time viewing the whole image because it was larger than the post (I can't be the only one) there's 2 solutions.

First:

1)Right click the image

2) Select "Copy Image Url"

3) Paste the url into a new tab

Second:

1) Right click the image

2) Click inspect element.

3) In your browsers console add the following property to the <img> tag. style="width:100%".

Or... right click -> view image...

Not that I agree with that map anyway. Rough estimate? Sure. Proportions? Way off.

Cards of Fate

I find it hard to argue the proportions of what seems to be an official map.

He's right, the proportions are messed up.

Irate Pirate

Isn't that map horribly out of date Zook?

Zook Murnig
06-16-15, 02:16 PM
Yes, and that's why I'm not saying anything else is wrong, but the proportions are seriously messed up. In the new version, every region (aside from Scara Brae) is approximately the same size. Also, the map I posted is, to my knowledge, the most recent official map before the one Dirks posted (which is at least a year or two old itself).

Hysteria
06-17-15, 08:02 AM
The map isn't supposed to be re-creating the old one, it's a new map. There was a lot of conversation about how the last map was wrong as well.

Im just saying, when the content admin posts a map "teasing" us, chances are it's the map stoph and Lye have been working on forever. IE canon or a newly instated canon that gives no bothers anout previous proportions.

You guys realize that you are inadvertently making me more curious about the "map," with every post here about it, right?

I didn't mean to start a whole thing about this... But everyone has various headcanon about how a region is supposed to look. Just because an admin drastically changes its appearance doesn't mean I will reflect that in my writing, but the map originally posted was just very strange.

Everyone is entitled to their own head canon, but the official canon is used for official events. Also, making clever and/or effective use of official canon can earn extra Wildcard points, but that isn't necessarily limited to geography. And of course, making use of official canon makes it easier to affect official canon.
