It’s said that there are many possibilities, each one a world of their own. In some other universe, there is a reality where one moment went some other way. One moment changed, and thus changed all that came after.

It had been a sunny day when Natamrael stood in the forest with her children for what had been in one world the last time. Sunlight filtered through gaps in the trees, dancing as the boughs overhead swayed and shifted. The children were pushing and squealing, laughing as they played. The demoness watched over them, their tiny nude forms flitting through tall grass, each of them and their single wing glinting like the waves that dazzled on the river. Her own naked body turned as she heard cloth somewhere in the trees.

“Young ones, we aren’t alone,” she hissed. Their three bodies tensed as one, the kids moving together and pressing their backs together. With a flick of her wrist, Natamrael sent them scattering away. They would know, she thought, how long to stay hidden. After all, danger was no stranger to demons. It wasn’t the first time she’d let them hide while she’d taken care of things that sought to hurt them.

When she was alone in the clearing where her young had been playing, she tilted her head to the side and smiled up into the trees. She could see the shade where someone clad in black hid within the foliage. The thick leaves and mess of branches hid their features, but not for long.

“Come out, come out!” she called, letting her singsong voice carry with the wind while the demoness tapped her chin with a finger. She could smell the sweet notes of her pheromones pouring into the clearing, and her chest was warm. I do so hope this is a challenge, she thought while she waited.

A shift in the shadows, and a blade snaked out of the leaves.
