The mean streets of Scara Brae.
As one of the busiest cities in Corone itself, it was only rivaled by Radasnthia herself.
People clung to large cities in search of things. Dreams. Aspirations, ambitions, fortune and glory. All of it had the ebb and flow of its own twisted cycles. The side effect of a society gone to Hell. Scara Brae, as a city, was progressive in its commerce and trade with other nations. Thus, it prospered. The ebb and flow of commerce was visible in all aspects of the ugly city. Corruption swelled down from on high and trickled down to all facets of life. It was a city of decadence and greed. A sin city. Walk down the right alley in Scara Brae and you could find anything. They all knew that was true, a seedier crime element was present in the city that corrupted the very hearts and soul of Scara Brae.
The Knights of Scara Brae, the local policing militia, turned a blind eye when the right amount of gold was given as bribes.
In code and slang, the knights were called simply brass.
They were mostly knights by title and did very little to protect the every man on the streets.
Somehow, in the city, a mad free for all between criminal elements, both in power and those that were underworld, was in place.
It was difficult to leave your house alone without encounters from the criminal element.
In those days, crime syndicates worked to usurp the authority of the knights and even of Valeena Castle itself.
Then there were those in the middle.
Creno Valour was a simple courier working for the knights those days.
The times were dangerous and it was necessary to have a strong warrior by your side at all times. Creno Valour oft took employ from a connection he had within the Knights of Scara of Brae. There were always packages and parcel that needed to be safely delivered at all times. Creno had quickly become one of the best couriers in recent times. If there was something that needed delivery, Creno would get it done no questions asked. It didn't matter if the package needed to end up in hostile and seedier sections of Scara Brae. Creno would get it done.
At that moment in time, he found himself standing in the general offices of the Knights of Scara Brae. Creno noticed that there were several knights present and many were injured, or recovering from injury. There was a man sitting at a table overseeing the packages of the district they were all in. The attendant for the bureaucrat was waving towards Creno. Creno proceeded forward and looked at the attendant, then the man sitting at the table. His attention was then focused on the official that he would be interacting with, technically Creno's boss at the time.
Creno noticed that his boss had an unusually exhausted expression on his face. Creno was usually busy running this or that package all around the various portions of Scara Brae. Sometimes to distant corners of the realm. He noticed that his boss seemed also a bit agitated because he was yelling at his attendant. There were shouts in the general office from several different locations. Just another night in Scara Brae.
"Ah. Creno sorry about all the chaos, it's bad out there. Really fucking bad." The official took a deep pull of whatever alcoholic beverage was in his goblet. "Took a big hit this week. Government's going helter skelter man. Trying to reroute funding from one part of the military to favor another. We get cuts, everybody suffers. Then they replenish our ranks with these recruits that don't know shit about how bad it is out there." He took another sip.
Creno simply listened, and kept his arms folded across his chest.
"I got a priority job for you Creno." The official looked at Creno, his eyes were strained. "The package I'm about to place in your care is a priority package from Master Narriplion. He requested you by name. This is a tremendous honour for any carrier and is usually reserved for Chief Couriers. The package in question has a very special client and set of instruction, do you accept?" The boss asked.
Creno simply nodded and did not respond to the man's words.
However, he kept listening intently to everything that the fellow was saying.
Creno had a serious expression on his face, he knew what the stakes were at all times.
"Good man." The official motioned towards his attendant. "The parcel I'm about to give you is a classified parcel. Technically speaking, it is more valuable than your life. Do you understand what I'm saying here?" The official asked.
"Go on." Creno understood the importance of a working infrastructure during times of warfare.
"The instructions for you are very specific. You are to perform to exact wording of the contract and the parcel must be delivered. I cannot over state the importance of this delivery. Get this done right, and you will be paid beyond your wildest dreams. If you fail, don't bother coming back." The official said.
Then, the attendant handed Creno Valour the most important package and instructions of his life.
Creno proceeded to place the parcel in his carrying bag. "Who is the recipient of the package?" Creno asked.
"Your instructions are in the letter that we gave you with the parcel. Read it carefully and then proceed to the exchange. Do not fuck this up." The official said, there was an unusual hint of anger in his voice. "You were chosen because you are currently the best runner we have. I'm not gonna lie to you, you're heading into a red zone." The official continued. "Deliver the parcel safely and double time it back here for further instructions. Creno. Get this one right and we'll all be fucking Heroes, you have my word here." The official said. "You are dismissed."
Creno nodded and began the most dangerous journey of his military career.
