View Full Version : Writer block
So I hit a wall. What does everyone else do when this happen?

Either I read a book, no kidding I can't tell you the many times I found an answer to my block in someone elses plot that I twisted some and applied it to my character; and two, talked it over with someone else, either my husband or a dear friend of mine. So, lets talk plots.

I open MS Word and stare at the screen for a few minutes, then type out everything that comes to mind until my block goes away.

I usually abandon them for a while... and when i come back i re-read, realise how horrible my writing was, and throw it away anyways.
True story.
Asiiiiiiiiide that! I listen to music (Falling Up always gets my creative juices flowing,) write something else then come back, plot around in my head... So yeah.

I start writing plot outlines instead. Detailed outlines. With character arcs, plot events, key actions that must happen during plot events, background information, everything. :')

Go back and find what you made your character do that he/she was not down with. Fix it.

I'll echo Michelle's (Alydia's) idea. It sounds good to me

Video games and music does it for me, usually.

Drink.
Drink until you can no longer stand. Then drink until you can no longer sit. Then drink more while lying curled up on the floor.
Followed those steps so far?
Good. Now you're ready to start writing and tomorrow, when in the grips of a god-awful hangover, you can edit what you've got to make it legible.
Works for me.

I don't think Hemingway meant to be THAT drunk when writing.

Haha. Plotters unite!
I feel like drinking just might be the answer XD

Drinking is always the answer.
We just haven't figured out what the question was, yet.

Just write, post, edit later. Nobody's perfect and a story is better than no story.
Also, cider.

I also get over writers block by stepping away then coming back.
I already suggested listening to music. But it really works. Not while writing, but stepping away and listening to it.
And falling asleep helps too. The best dreams are the strange dreams!

Sake. Or lambic.
Ive learned that going for a good ride on my bike (no not a peddle bike) helps. Lol this was just a general question to start out with, but its blowing up XD I like it.

I find reading a good book can stimulate the mind enough to get that inspiration engine working again.
That, or two and a half years away from the writing scene.
Up to you.

I've heard lots of people say you should write out the crap that's blocking your mind, then the good stuff flows. I'll generally write a paragraph or two, delete it, re-write, delete that, then write a post I'm happy with.
I've found I need to remove myself from my house recently to get some decent alone time to write. So I go to a small cafe or something, get a coffee, be surrounded by sunlight and stuff and write.
